All the time, everytime. I use Westones custom fitted because I can't use foam or cheaper ones without getting cauliflower ear. (I had my ears drained a few times over the years from wrestling in high school.)

They're not really plugs, more like attenuaters where you insert the level of attenuation you want from -6db up to -35db. I use -9db or -15db depending on the venue...they work like magic.

Very cool

Now that I may try even myself

You guys rock

IIRC, the total cost was around $150 which includes the hearing test and getting fitted with the molds.

I like them so much, I wear them when I mow the lawn, use the leaf blower, go to shows, etc.

... I use hi-fi hearos, pretty cheap overall, but good...

Are these musicians good without earplugs?

Two votes for Hearos, thanks so much guys!!!

Not sure, they never play without them...

Make that 3. I use the Hearos at all rehersals. I go bare live (we tend to be a little quieter on stage than in rehersal). The cheapo foamies cut all the high end so you can only hear bass. The ones I use look like rubber Christmas trees - much more even across the board attenuation. I think the ones I have are the older version of:

I had Custom molded ones made.....

I dont play without them, The band I play with plays at RETARED VOLUMES (I'm talking 6-8 master volume 2 4x12s each), But I had the Plugs made for my last job, and now where I work where I dont need them and use them for jamming.

I use these custom molded ear plugs. They have interchangable filters. They have a linear eq, so you don't loose the highs right away. I use the -25 when I play drums and -9 when I play guitar. They are expesive but I think our hearing is worth it. You have them fitted by an audiologist. And you can pick any colour you want.

I always do with a band. I got some from an ear doctor that are fit to my ear and dont block the high end.

Everyone I know who's gotten custom molded earplugs says its a world of difference. I would get them but I don't play loud that often so its not really worth it. I use the foam ones when necessary, I just make sure everything sounds good before things get too loud as its impossible to get an accurate read on your stage sound with those. I've tried the rubber christmas tree ones but I can't get them to stay in so they're totally useless to me

There were times that my vision would go blurry if I moved in front of the bass players speakers...I shit you not!
Cool, now that's METAL!
We ain't anywhere near that loud thou, much as I love to feel the bass

Well I just phoned L&M(Canada's GC/MF) and the Heroes have to ordered in but they are less than $20/pair. So I'm going to PU two pair as a gift, so there ain't no debate!

May get some custom ones for myself. Maybe I've just been lucky so far, but I don't wanna push it if I can get a DB drop without killing any of the tone!

Thanks to everyone for posting, you've been a real help.

I try once and a while, but have a hard time adjusting to it. I think I can actually here things more clearly with them in, but the sound is muffled (if that makes any sence at all).

I know I should, but I don't. In the eternal quest for good tone why plug some of those frequencies? it's like fucking with a rubber.

Having said that I found out about 6 months ago I have significant hearing loss in my right ear (the one closest to my brother's snare.)

LOL, well if you ever come up this way I suggest you get over that, or stay away from the downtown east side! Vancouver has a huge outbreak of various VDs(some studies say the worst anywhere) and other lovelies, it's fucking scary. <-no pun intended.

that's exactly what it is - an aural condom! Keeps you from getting the HIV (HIgh Volume)...

Earplugs are your friend....I use them whenever the stage volume warrants it.
It does not effect your timing, that's a whole other issue.

Everything has already been said on the topic... So, on to my expeeriences.

I, personnally, have never gotten along with ear plugs. Wanted to... even tried the semi-expensive ones. Just not the same... Can't teach an old dog new tricks I guess.

I make my son wear them when he comes to band practice.

I always set up my amps with earplugs out, but then I put them in when the band plays. I can't handle cymbals being bashed right beside me.

Anyone that doesn't should. Or get in-ear monitors. I have tinnitus as a result of not using them. Goddamn ringing never stops. When I lived alone it made it impossible to sleep at night w/out some kind of noise like the TV. I'm under 30 and believe me if there is one thing I wish I could go back and do over it's this. You can't get your hearing back. Don't dick around with it.

That is exactly what my rhythm player says, I must say our drummer is very loud!
I'd set the PA lower if it were not for his volume :aww:

Somehow my neighbors love it thou, good thing I live in an older house. The walls have horse hair mixed in with the plaster so it really absorbs sound well.

"Today, loud noise exposure is a very common cause of tinnitus, and it often damages hearing as well. Unfortunately, many people are unconcerned about the harmful effects of excessively loud noise, firearms, and high intensity music."

I'm screwed, some of my fav things in life are playin', shootin', and racin'. I must be very lucky so far, knock on wood...and pass the plugs :scared:

  dude, thats not a house, its a barn....
Yeah, I'm on board with this one. I try to remember them, went to see Kage a few weeks back and was stuck WAAAY to close to the monitors and I'm still hearing things.... Its a smart investment, 'specially if youre playin within range of loud high end freq's... The nice thing to remember is because of proximity, we'll all be deaf one day soon... WHAT??!??
