Oh, I don't blame Vai for taking that gig. I do blame him for ruining that album though :D Who is this "Scotty" noob? Only 16 posts. Weak!

Feels like the old days almost, even if just briefly.

Vai walked away laughing taking $1,000,000 of Coverdale's money to take the gig and did everything at his house in the Harmony Hut, Vai may not have Syke's vibe and heavy handed tone but it was a nice paycheck   I know we have disagreed abut Vai's Deeper the Love solo but it is a monster piece.

First time I experienced a Coli was with Gainfreak and it was at that moment I understood Syke's direction and tone; people fawn over 2C+s but give me a in-line 6 any day for the aggression. Only reason why I still have a metal grill Mesa with MC90s and EVMs is for that day I see a Coli and the dude has no clue what it is

I have been redoing the man cave, yes the "It puts the lotion in the basket" cave is retired and moved over to the finished part of the basement, and was hanging the guitars and yeah that Slime Green Charvel's neck is just a cut above the other 4 necks. I do believe when you said that the CS was helping out with that batch to get them out.

Exactly! DJ...come back to the garage brother!!!

What Keith Olson said is absolute nonsense. You would have to be deaf to listen to 1987 and then listen to the first Blue Murder record and not realize who was ALMOST entirely responsible for the sound and writing and vibe of that 1987 album. Listen to the album before 1987. Listen to the album after 1987. Do the math. It is simple.

Also, Vandenbergs playing on the 1st three Vandenberg albums was more than good enough to record that Slip of the Tongue album with Whitesnake. I believe it would have been 100X better than what they did with Vai. I don't think Adrian knew how or wanted to get that huge tone like Sykes had so the album would have suffered in that regard.

Adrian on those first three albums is one of my all time favorite. Especially the second album!

I am not a fan of Vai though he is ridiculously good. He just doesn't do it for me at all.

Poor old Coverdale, can you imagine how he felt having a young guy who looked, played AND sang like that in HIS band? :D

I know we have disagreed abut Vai's Deeper the Love solo but it is a monster piece.
I believe with Adrian's sense of melody and composition abilities within his solo's...whatever solo he would have put down on "Deeper" would have been killer. It's a great pop rock song but Vai just completely misses the mark and that song is great example. Literally nothing against Steve but it's exactly what I didn't want to hear in that song. No disrespect...Steve's a monster player, just wrong fit.

Yeah... that's Keith Olsen covering for his buddy Coverdale and trying to minimize Sykes' contributions. Keith doesn't mention the reason Sykes had no interest in working more on Here I Go Again was 1.It wasn't one of his songs and he felt he had already organized a pretty good updated arrangement (the album version that starts with the keyboard intro) compared to the original version on Saints and Sinners and 2. he had already been FIRED from the band weeks earlier. Sykes did go back and finish his solos on the other songs on the album after he was fired.

Sykes worked with Mike Frazier and Mike Stone, Olsen wasn't even really involved until later. Then Keith came in and thought they needed another pop version of HereI Go Again --which Dann did as John had no interest.
Thanks for the riposte - that nonsense from Olsen is disturbing. There is no sign of Huff apart from the rehashed HIGA.
The first '1987' version of 'Here I Go Again' being erased from the recording and replaced with 80s clean radio-friendly jangle is a criminal offence for which Coverdale should do time in the musical penitentiary (if there was such a place). I cannot listen to it without getting hot under the collar, and I'm a big Huff fan.
Seek out the first version folks, it is miles better.

Post '1987' tells us all we need to know...
Sykes continues to write, play and sing up a storm (he could be helped by better production - Olsen not being interviewed for that job).
Whitesnake is not Coverdale on his own and need a top writer/player to flourish and eventually found a gem in Aldrich, although they never eclipsed '1987' and sound noisy with 2 players.

PS Sykes fans should listen to the Sykes 'Out of my Tree' disc for therapy, or indeed Thin Lizzy 'One Night Only'.
Each of those is a finger up to Coverdale. Two fingers to you, you bitter old bastard.
PPS Note to Coverdale: 'Still of the Night' tuned a whole step down sounds like ass, so stop playing it live.
The funny thing is, the album version of "Hear I go Again" with Johns backing tracks and Adrians solo was what everyone heard from the album. I'm a Huff fan as well but I don't think I ever heard his version until I plunked down some change to get the imported 87 Versions. Dan seems to be getting a lot of play by Keith when in all reality that was probably all he recorded.

Agreed, Steves just not a low slung blues rock dude, he's got quite a comical sound to his solos where he makes his guitar speak humorous lines and interesting techniques. Very melodic but I just wanted to hear some sleazy bluesey solos similar to Moody/Sykes. The live video from Donington is a mess, badly shot yes but also the only person holding it together is Tommy on the drums! But the this DVD sums up why I wasn't a fan of Steve on slip of the tongue, just feels out of place

I saw John at the House Of Blues in Hollywood playing a Tribute to Phil Lynott/Thin Lizzy.

The guy had the most incredible guitar sound. I wish I had a video of that performance.

Michael lugged the ProTools rig to Japan and recorded the shows and came back and worked on the mixes in John's studio. I think Michael also worked on mixing a solo John did for Hughes/Turner (or was it Derek Shirinian?)

Cool stuff!^^^ Awesome info Drew, and Michael..thanks for making a great live mix! Seriously, was listening to BBL yesterday and its just perfect. Sounds killer, best live mix I've heard.

And I just paid $36 to get a copy of this CD from Germany.

I have a Zune, 10 bucks a month and you can download anything they have..some artists protect their stuff but I find most of what I want. Includes my 2 kids Zunes for that monthly rate. Those import discs are spendy! Iremember 7 years ago, finding the Icon disc for 40 from Germany...I bought it..lol

Bad Boy Live is on Spotify though if you're going down the streaming route. Unreal guitar sound on that album, I don't know which I prefer - the modded Marshalls or the Colesiums for tone...

Exactly this... Could not have said it any better chubtone. As if Vandenberg wasn't good enough to hang on a whitesnake album. That must also be the reason why Coverdale continued to tour with him and handle a boat load of the solos when they had a vacancy. As for Sykes come on, you listen to him live and you know he could bring it. Sounds more like conflict of personalities rather than anything else.
