I'm liking what the Minotaur model on my HX Stomp. I know it's not supposed to be ideal for metal since it doesn't cut as much bottom-end as a Tube Screamer, but I'm really liking what it does for the high mids, and the bottom-end is really dirty in a good way.

So I wonder who's using a real Klon-type for metal? Which one are you using?

I think Soul Food is great with certain amps . I use to use with Uberschall a lot back in day

I have gotten some great tones with a KTR out front and an EQ in the loop of my Bogner XTC

Haha same! I've since moved on to the Tumnus DLX, Big Tone Music Golden Pearl and Demonic Machines Homunculus. That circuit just makes that amp scream with harmonics and adds the perfect amount of juice to the mids. My 2nd fav circuit for the Uber is the blues breaker.
The mxr fat sugar I believe is klon based and I’m loving it right now
You are correct sir. Josh from JHS LOOOOVES to point that out often to the TGP crowd LOL!!

The soul food is a fantastic boost in front of the 5150, i used to do that all the time. Also the maxon od820 is supposedly klonish, a lot of guys used that back in the early 2000s as a boost in the studio, as it did not have the low end roll off like the 808/ts9 etc

i literally never go tgp page, maybe twice a year during a blizzard or something, ill have to take a lurk soon. this pedal is awesome though, maybe ill try and do a proper demo later

I would say anything KLON like is going to be great. To my ear these things add clarity on the top and even bass response. So you just get more of your amp with more definition. I use a MojoFX Sacred Cow.

Alright, I might order a Soul Food or a Zeus just to start with something cheap to see if it works.

Make sure to try the MXR Timmy too, if you haven't already.
I never got around to get a Cochrane built Timmy at the time, but recently snagged up the small MXR one.
It's one of those boosts that you can find a good compromise in it, so that it can sound like a great mild OD on its own, on a clean channel. And if you switch to your amps dirt channel, it works as quite a musical, tightening boost. Different from SD-1, OD-3, TS9 or DOD250.

i have a cheap caline blue sky that i believe is supposed to be a timmy of sorts i havent played in a while, ill have to give it another go

Klon style pedals are great for high gain. I love them in front of Marshalls especially.

J Rockett Archer Silver is awesome, as is wampler tumnus and MXR sugar drive. I also have a DIY one with some old diodes. They all sound the same tbh.

Generally, does the Klon type of circuit sit somewhere between a fully transparent T.C. Electronic style clean boost and highly colored TS kind of overdrive?

The OD820 has been one of my favorites for years. Like mentioned above, it gets compared to a Klon quite a bit. I compared it to a Klon KTR years ago. While I wouldn't say they were night and day different, I honestly didn't find them that similar either. At least not enough to warrant all the comparisons. The KTR was brighter and had a harder attack. The OD820 has a warmer, more prominent mid bump. To me the OD820 is like a bigger, juicer 808. I wonder if the comparison is mainly due to them both bumping the voltage to 18v and the gain knob functioning as a blend. Or maybe it's closer to the original Centaur? I haven't played one of those. Anyway, back to the OD820's high gain boosting capabilities.

Set the gain to around 9:00 (or less to keep more low end in the signal), tone to taste, and level between 12:00-3:00 and it's killer for boosting a high gain amp. It's a great boost and worth checking out if you're finding the usual TS suspects too lean or narrow sounding or want to check out something that may or may not be similar to a Klon lol.

I'd say that's more or less a fair assessment. Klon circuit keeps the mids as they are and adds some sheen and clarity on top while pronouncing the lows a bit more. It does jack the mids, soften the top, and pull your bass out. If I could change one thing it would be a bass knob, sometimes I don't want that touched so much. I think there are some klon types with some more eq options which might interest me down the line. Nice circuit though no question. Hard to make it sound crappy.

But but does it have the special sauce Diodes, HMM???

I was using a soul food with a 6505+ for a bit. Then I used a Ryra Klone with a splawn Nitro and loved it

I just ran my Soul Fool into the Hermanson . It was pretty good . I still prefer koko boost but it still kicks ass
