Recently I've been thinking about picking up a suhr modern. They look like great guitars and build quality seems second to none my only reserve is that I always see them up for sale in classifieds here and other places. Just trying to get honest opinions from some guys that have owned them for a while. I had a jackson sl2h but found it a little too dark for my tastes. I currently play a 2011 r9 and clapton strat but want something with 24 frets and more options. Thanks for any opinions.

I actually am in the same boat as you. And I was wondering the same thing this morning. At the end of the day, I think gas gets the best of all of us. When I look at my small collection, I see some amazing guitars. Then I get some gas and start Jones Ing for another guitar. Once I start playing my stuff I realize how lucky IM.

You might also be noticing a large amount for sale because you're in the market.

Lots of people just want to try different things. I have a deal with my wife that I can buy a guitar or amp anytime I want - as long as I also sell one to cover most of the cost. I had to sell a really nice Jackson to get a really nice hamer that I sold to get a really nice Anderson. Suhr makes a killer guitar and I wouldnt worry about the number of used ones for sale. I have a few things for sale now because our taxes were more then we expected. It happens, people sell stuff they like for lots of reasons.

Another reason you see so many used, IMO, is that a lot of people think if they get one it will make them play like Guthrie or Andy Wood. When that doesn't happen it goes up for sale.

Because they're not cheap and people have a lot invested in them.

One day this week, I played every guitar I own. Les Pauls, Strats, PRS, SG.....My Suhr sounded better, played better, and was the most comfortable of the bunch. The chords seem richer and more defined and the single notes seem to pop out more and are much more lively sounding and feeling. So much so that I got another one on Friday the 13th. Bad luck be damned!!

As for the reason there are some in the classifieds....could be any number of reasons.

I personally cannot think of a better guitar than my suhr and Anderson, and have sold all others. They are just perfect to play and sound incredible plugged or unplugged. Add to that either company's top notch customer service and you can't lose.

In addition to some of the reasons people have provided above, I also think some folks end up custom ordering guitars with specs they think they'll like as opposed to knowing.

Thanks for all the honest responses guys. Like I said everything Ive read about suhr is that all their products are top quality from amps to guitars. My only problem is that there is no store near me that I can demo one so its hard to buy a guitar without trying it out, because even if it feels great it may not sound great or vice versa. Like one person said a lot of classifieds are misleading people saying this is the best guitar I've ever played but unfortunately I want to buy such and such or need to unload this one etc. Maybe the reason I do see them for sale is because people bought without trying as well.

Any how if anybody who totally loves their suhr modern or classic ssh would like to chime in that'd be great.

That's only because it's such a popular model that the market is full of them. And, then you have those that constantly flip guitars regardless. As se7en said, people that buy them have a lot invested. So, it becomes a choice to flip them for cheaper alternatives. Then you have the "Custom" factor. They might have ordered it a certain way, and then realize afterwards that some of the specs they chose just don't work for them, so they flip it and move on. And, for some, they just simply prefer another brand.

The Suhr Modern is a superb guitar model with an outstanding reputation. Whether it's for you or not is another story. For every classified you see, I can show you current owners who swear by them. I personally love them, and as you can see by my sig, I own four of them. I actually owned three others beforehand, but sold them because I wanted to order replacements with updated specs after getting a better idea of what I was after. The four I own now, are perfect for me in every way...so they aren't going anywhere. If you're considering a custom order, I can only advise that you do your research. Good Luck!

One other thing I'll add, that I've said many times before...if you know exactly what you want in a guitar, then the suhr and Anderson custom shops can build it to a T. I once ordered from suhr and the finish was not up to par according to them and they had the dealer call me to tell me that they were sorry and going to re-do it.

What other company have you heard of that would own up to something like that and fix it on their own dime? I was definitely impressed.

It's probably just gas, but I've noticed that classified ads here tend to be really dishonest which doesn't help.
"I'm going through rough financial time / family needs money for medical needs so this needs to go...."; has a NGD post the next week....
"this is the best guitar I've ever played....but I didn't realize that I don't want a new guitar I prefer used ones"....posts a NGD post the next week for a spanking new guitar....

Suhr makes great guitars, but they're not infallible, I'm sure a few are turds but don't expect to read that in the ads....

there are some guys like that, no matter what guitar they are selling, "it is the bes guitar they have ever played." There are some guys selling a few at a time, yet the 2 or 3 for sale are the best they have ever played. That being said, the Suhr Modern is a great guitar. I have one. I really love the pickups that came with it. Mine is basswood with a maple top, and the ssh+ goes great with that wood combination. It is a really clear and defined sound even with gain. The playability is also very good. The neck feels great, the action can get low without fret buzz, and the way the neck is finished is very fast and slick feeling. The fret work is as good as any company I have seen do. Buy one used, that way if you don't bond with it you can recoup most of your cash. The Modern is a great playing and sounding guitar. That being said, there are other guitars out there that play as good. Right now I have a Les Paul Trad Plus, and a PRS McCarty, and the Modern is always the first guitar I pickup. Sounds awesome. had another Modern with an alder body and no maple top, and it had the Aldrich pups. The Modern I have now with the basswood/maple combo with the ssh+ to me sounds and plays a LOT better.

they're great guitars. I personally don't care one bit for the modern as I don't like they tweak they did to a stander strat body.

They are great, upper end guitars so I think a lot of people just buy into the hype and want to see for themselves if it lives up to it only to dump it amd move on to the next. They you have the GAS folks who just like NGD's to post pictures, say its the best since sliced bread, take to my grave....8 days later its in the classified of a different forum LOL.

This happens frequently in higher end gear which is why I dont ever buy brand new...I let other people pay 3500-5000 new and I'll buy them used and virtually unplayed condition a couple years later for 2200-3000 ;) I got my 2009 R7 for 2100, had a 4450 tag ;)

Exactly my first thought. They're expensive, but let's face it, like a regular non Private Stock PRS, they're not actually exclusive in the slightest - this is production line stuff. High end, very nice stuff, but still production line. So there's a ton of them around, which means there will be lots on the used market..

I'm selling mine cause I've got two others that I play more and my tax return absolutely blows this year so I could use the extra cash to pay off some credit cards.

I'm sure they are well made guitars- for sure.. for me its a vibe thing. The les paul or fender strat has more of a street rock n roll vibe to me. The suhr is too "glossy" not punk or street enough. I initially felt the same way about my Prs custom 22 when I first got it so I banged it around as much as possible to relic it. Prs guitars that have been beaten up look better to me than new ones... lol

In my case it was because I was skint and gas etc and it was the only instrument of any value i owned so maybe there's a bit of that also?
We all don't have mega rigs and stables of guitars ;)

Just a thought. I have nine Suhrs, and they're keepers. It's entirely possible some will purchase their first production Suhr, love it so much that they decide to order one custom to their specs, and decide to sell their production Suhr to help fund the custom order one.

I have a Pro Series S2 and a Classic Pro. It's basically the same guitar except the Classic Pro has SS frets and the SSC system. Also my S2 has a maple finger board and my Classic Pro is rosewood. Can't say enough good things about them.
