Robert DeLeo doesn’t get the cred he deserves. Scott was such a huge presence and Dean had the swag and killer tones so it was easy for him to sink into the background. But Robert was a huge part of the writing. Most of those cool chords Dean plays were written by Robert. I remember when playing in shitty cover bands, bass players would comment on his bass parts being sneaky hard.

Back then I wanted to play Dead and Bloated every set, and for the encore. Everyone else wanted Plush 15 times but not me.
Love that tune.
Great band.

I like them a lot. But alice in chains was fucking insane. Best vocals of the grunge era amd the tone was amazing
Their unique vocal harmonies set them apart from every other band. And Staley was a top notch vocalist. Plus, incredible songwriting was the vehicle for it all. Morning brougham.

I enthusiastically approve this thread. It’s funny to read about STP being labeled a Pearl Jam rip off band in the early days. I really don’t hear it. That Core album is such a vibe and takes me somewhere every time I hear it.

Deleos tone has always been a bit of a mystery to me. Got the Demeter preamp with deleo spec gain channels and still didn’t feel like I was capturing it. One of many times I learned the lesson - it’s not the gear it’s the player.

I’m with you. I played that riff in drop D for the longest time. It’s a lot more fun to play in standard

I am grateful to have attended a STP show in our local Auditorium.

Scott even commented on how amazing the acoustics were in the building.

Such a great show! What massive guitar tone.....someone shot this video of the show they are directly in front of guitar cabs so it really highlights the awesome guitar...dry as fuck, massive, and ripping faces clear off!

Dean is on record as saying that he uses the Seymour Duncan Jazz set of pickups. I can't argue with that ripping tone he's getting.

Awesome band, couldn't really get into their 2nd album but their debut was killer.

Got to see them once in 02 or 03, they played with RHCP and completely stole the show. They were awesome live.
