I prefer the 6L6 wizards, as well.

I have never tried a hellrazor, but Brams clips sound good.

I think the hell razor is the closest I’ve gotten to my Larry in terms of immediacy and punch (maybe a Hermansson)

That makes sense, I'm not really a fan of the five gain stage hermannsson clips I've heard but I haven't played one in person so I don't have a huge opinion either way

I think of wizard and Larry as apples and oranges though personally, both great, some people prefer one to the other

Thanks for the clip. Nice job with it. Does not seem to have the BIG open Wizard sound. Both the og Metal and MC1 have the big Marshally thing. These newer amps don’t have that.

Yeah, some of it does have to do with the amount of gain I think. It’s absurd the amount available straight in. At one point I do turn up the mids a bit at 6:30 on it. That may be more some guys deal. Truthfully I like turning them up a bit more when it’s just me, but I know if I double track it… it’s just too much for me so out of habit as a fault, I put them lower.

Yep, MTL is the one I’m keeping. This amps fun, but uh the wife definitely notices the amps with the same exact logo on them lol

I like the idea of a HR having a Sweep control. And wouldn't it make sense for the amp to receive a contour control as well?
Who can talk Rick into this? I feel the amp has such a steep price, it deserves to have all options.

When I ordered a Hell Razor from Rick, I asked him about building mine with both a Depth and Contour. He said he didn't offer that and that "it would be more trouble than it's worth" to do. He did say he would build a Hell Razor Hybrid with a Contour in place of a Depth control though. I went with a 150w KT88 version with a Depth control. Love the amp.

To be fair, a bunch of the 4GS Hermannsson clips were quite good to my ears - I just haven't heard anything from the 5GS models that I dug.

Most of the clips i've heard (of the 5gs Hermies) are very much what I would describe as "messy" or "unusable" amounts of gain, at least in terms of a close miced recording. Obviously it's a different story "in the room" or for phone clips, and those amounts of gain are a ton of fun to play and mess around with.

If you get around to it, I'd love to hear a 5GS in a less gained out, more controlled, revealing context, like you would use for a record - as that's the "tone world" I live in.

Also wizards are one of the few amps I prefer lower wattage to higher. Because of the low mid deal, more of them seem to come with higher wattage at least in my limited experience.
