Hello all,

I'm searching for a high gain hot rodded Marshall head, and these seem to be the four main contenders right now. What I want the amp to do:

-Have a great clean
-Provide some great semi-broken up blues/Plexi-ish tones
-Give me a great high gain overdrive for hard rock/metal styles...ala Alice in Chains "Facelift"
-A nice effects loop

Now, the Mako and Cameron both have wait times, which I can deal with if I'm getting a quality head. No one, from what I can see, has played the new Mako Mak 2, and Andrew isn't making more Makoplexs until Dec., so the Makoplex is out unfortunately.

I can most likely find the CAE use for a decent price, but the other heads are 100 watters for around the same price as well, so that's something to consider.

The Bogner seems to do what I'd like. A Marshally tone with lots of options. I'd like to buy used, but there don't seem to be a lot on the used market.

I've had thoughts about Splawn, but decided against them for different reasons, so these are the four contenders! Who can describe the Cameron tone to me?? From the clips I've heard, they seem very gainy (good), but I also heard lots of scooped mids going on, and not a ton of girth. Again, I'm just judging from clips which isn't the best way, I know. But, I probably won't have a chance to play a Cameron, so if I put a deposit on his new head, I want to be sure about it.

Any insight, advice, warnings, or propaganda is appreciated. Thanks,

-Joe

Well from the aforementioned heads, I've played only with a CAE and 101b.
I would choose the CAE personally (the SE model).

Nice, it looks like a very nice head...Very $$$ too! I'm also open to other suggestions as well.

Sup Joe!!

Why not get in touch with Paige and ask him about his Camerons? He has a few of them and maybe he will let you hear one in person.

PEACE!!!

What about a VHT then?
I prefer the Pittbull CLX over CAE

I would take Paiges Jose modded Marshall anyday over a CAE, XTC, or Mako. XTC's i feel you have to play since some guys love them and some hate them. Iv'e played the Makoplex and it was a cool amp, but with very limited features.

Some of us have played the new Cameron, i liked it. The clean was amazing. The gain was bitching, and it cleaned up nicely. I have never liked the gain channels one the CAE amps i have heard. And i like the gain channel on the new Cameron better than the other amps mentioned.

Try and ask Paige if you can check out his Cameron's. If you liked his Jose Marshall then you would probably dig the new Cameron.

Yeah....a Cameron 1959SLP would fit the bill for what you are asking if an fx loop was added.

I have to ask though, why do you need to spend $2500? The JVM or 5150III would fit the bill as well and you have a ton of beer money left over.

I was trying to make that my max price. Not saying I must spend that much though. I had a JVM and like it, cool amp. But, I wasn't very impressed by the clean, maybe I need to try it again. I would like to try the 5150 III as well, these are just the amps I had in mind at the moment.

My main objective is to find an amp I'll keep for a good while, so I can focus on playing more than anything. I know it seems like a stretch with all of us being gear whores, but if I spend a good chunk for a quality amp, I have no issues with that. If it can do all the tones I need, awesome. Also, I just sold a bunch of stuff that really wasn't seeing any use, so whichever amp I go for is essentiall paid for already.

Dan, I would love to check out Paige's Cameron, I need to hit that nigga up. Hopefully he will chime in soon. VHTs would be cool to check out too.

The new Cameron will do EXACTLY what you're looking for.

Weird about the clean, imo it is a great clean for a switcher.

I will admit that if I was not happy with what I have I would have been on that Cameron pre-order run without a doubt.

Well...I may have a makoplex available, but haven`t decided what I am going to do yet. The makoplex is not footswitchable, but it is a pretty versatile amp IMO. I am hoping to hang on to it, but I will probably have made a decesion by Sunday or Monday. Shoot me a PM or an email if interested (jr372 AT cornell dot edu)

100% mint. Was taken out of the box and has sat on 2x12 cab its entire life, doesn`t even have dust on it. I love the thing to death, just don`t know if I can keep it and my cameron right now (just moved and got a new dog...expenses, expenses, expenses!). If I do let it go, I will just buy another from Andrew in December when I will be more on my feet.

Haven`t decided yet, but I was thinking somewhere around $1400/$1350 +shipping/paypal. I have a crappy pic right now, but will take better ones if I do decide to let it go:

Cool, it looks real good. How are the cleans on it?? Mild OD sounds?? I'm definitely interested.

Joe, you are welcome to swing by my place as well if you'd like to check out a Cameron. I loved my Mako, but the Camerons spoil me with extra features that actually work and sound good.
