Hello all,
I'm searching for a high gain hot rodded Marshall head, and these seem to be the four main contenders right now. What I want the amp to do:
-Have a great clean
-Provide some great semi-broken up blues/Plexi-ish tones
-Give me a great high gain overdrive for hard rock/metal styles...ala Alice in Chains "Facelift"
-A nice effects loop
Now, the Mako and Cameron both have wait times, which I can deal with if I'm getting a quality head. No one, from what I can see, has played the new Mako Mak 2, and Andrew isn't making more Makoplexs until Dec., so the Makoplex is out unfortunately.
I can most likely find the CAE use for a decent price, but the other heads are 100 watters for around the same price as well, so that's something to consider.
The Bogner seems to do what I'd like. A Marshally tone with lots of options. I'd like to buy used, but there don't seem to be a lot on the used market.
I've had thoughts about Splawn, but decided against them for different reasons, so these are the four contenders! Who can describe the Cameron tone to me?? From the clips I've heard, they seem very gainy (good), but I also heard lots of scooped mids going on, and not a ton of girth. Again, I'm just judging from clips which isn't the best way, I know. But, I probably won't have a chance to play a Cameron, so if I put a deposit on his new head, I want to be sure about it.
Any insight, advice, warnings, or propaganda is appreciated. Thanks,
-Joe
