This, exactly.
By 86 the 2205/10s were as good as any modded Marshall, imo. They had deep lows, though not Mesa Mark lows but still more than a 2203/4; and the gain way up was as good or more than a boosted 2203. Jubilees became a 'jose' style mod with a push/pull MV that, like a Jose, boosted...
We had a small amp fest in Chi last fall. Jeff(Beyond Black) and I both brought our Nick 'mutant Aldrich' modded amps. Mine started life as a 69 Major, that someone made into a Superlead using a pair of 70s Dagnall transformers. Had all the stock mustards, Daly caps etc. Jeff's amp was a...
I was too young but I remember talking with an older friend who was gigging heavily with his JMPs back then; most didn't like the look, and thought they were waay too bright compared to their 70s amps....but, a few guys started showing up with them, and the gain was off the hook compared to the...
You've got them backwards.
Traditional=smaller, tighter like a vintage cab.
Standard=Oversize Recto cab; wall of sound/big lows. Looser than the Traditional.
Traditional is smaller, like a Marshall 1960B and will be tighter. Standard is the Recto oversize cab; not super loose but not as tight/focused as the Traditional.
Both sound killer with any/all non Marshall amps I've played through them with. Don't care for most Marshalls and V30s; other than...
The OD1X Smokes the SD1. IMO....And, I have a nice 86 SD1. The OD1X doesn't rob low end, yet still tightens the sound like the SD1. Also, it will remove nearly all the noise the SD1 adds. I like my SD1, but I hardly use it with the OD1X there.
Now, the original OD1 will have more 'organic'...
A Marshall(JMP, JCM 800, Jubilee) is a VERY uncomplicated amp. Unlike, say, a Mesa. There's really only 2 things to look at...the can caps, and the bias caps. Those are the only 'possible' service items. The can caps, as it's been stated here before by a certain builder who is very...
I remember, after 20 yrs of gigs finally really cleaning my 1991 Hamer USA Centaura....I'd always wiped it down after a gig; but I never took and cleaned/polished it. The amount of yellow dried smoke was fn disgusting. Horrible. Then, after polishing it, the finish had a nice checking to...
This.
The old iron sounds better...maybe in 20yrs the 2203x iron will age nicely? But when I've had a reissue, and A/Bd the vintage the vintage always wins. Just get good pics and make sure the amp had original Dagnall/Drakes and you're good.
The bright cap being present, and the filtering throughout being 50/500 in all the can caps are the most noticeable differences in the 70-74 Superleads. And, the higher power PTs that started (I think) in 1970 (unloaded plate voltage of 560v) also contribute to the more aggressive metal panel...
Never.
Neuters the amp. At least, in my 72 it does. And, removing it and turning it up to 10, isn't the same as the cap still in, and on 10. That's a fallacy. I changed the brand of 5K bright caps, and the tone changed considerably.
Bright caps are a huge part of the metal panel sound. If you...
A Jose master will drop the vol when engaged; in my experience.
I was shocked at the amp suddenly putting out 2204 gain after changing those values, adding the fat cap...then, when you push the vol up even more, boom there it is.
Last winter I grabbed a 72 50w Bass that was turned into a lead head. But, they used a bunch of non original orange drops among other things...since my 72 SuperTrem is 100% original, I looked at its circuit and basically copied what it had and re did the 50. While I was at it, I started looking...
Try one. It's like an already boosted G/F Triple Recto to my ears...I've had 3 of each over the years. Maybe not as 'organic' as the F but easily as good as a G, I'd say slightly better than the last G Triple I had and tighter straight in. The Clean is fantastic; the OD ch is very mid heavy so...
Back in 2014 I had just gotten my first SLO; and was not liking it as much as I expected to. Not a bad sound; but not great. I read about EVHs settings on the now defunct SLO forum; and part of it was diming the presence. After that(and boosting it as well) the amp came alive; I'd dime the P...
