I’d imagine your a fan of both guitar gear and the other type of gear lol.
😊 I was before 2 heart attacks. But enough to know it's worth the draw time with insulin pins + oil based 🤘

Gear forums LONG before musicians gear forums lol.

Shawn Lane was morbidly obese, but was untouchable technically. JP is probably other factors: gym, family, travel, tan laundry, etc.instead of the practicing regimen he used to do when he was, say, with Ibanez.

That’s why I quit. Seeing people die on a weekly basis really will take the fun out of it. This forum is quite diplomatic compared to places like PM, absolute animals over there lol.

If JP has changed at all it’s age, plain and simple.

We all get slower and more lethargic as we age. I think he still plays great.

Burnt out on Dream Theater along time ago tho.

The only guitarist in my opinion that has aged well is Jeff Beck. He was and is a true master of the instrument.

Zakk wylde has never had a problem his whole life.
Yeh but he's lock arm shredding pentatonic scales. For that fluid legato across the entire fretboard, I often find guys like Paul Gilbert, Guthrie etc. Being fat seems to have less effect, guys like Shawn Lane, Yngwie, Michael Romeo etc. But buff gigga-chad arms defo seem to restrict fluidity

i'm afraid of going to the gym now. i haven't been to a gym since the early 2000's. Since then, Female gym wear has become FAR more flattering/revealing. I'm worried i'm going to walk in, look at the cardio section, see 40 smokin hot, instagram influencer wannabees working on being the hottest, and my head will explode.

I wonder is it working out and strength training that hinders playing or is it steroid use? Do steroids affect coordination and fine motor skills? Looking at some pics of those guys from the 80’s a lot of them don’t look natty.

I’ve been lifting for a decade or more and haven’t had any problems but I’m also not a shredder and never have been. In fact I always assumed strength training is probably a benefit as strong muscles and tendons ought to be less susceptible to injuries. I always see people taking about tendon injuries, wrist and shoulder injuries from playing guitar, cramping with certain neck shapes, etc, and I’ve never had any problems like that.

Doesn't seem to affect (actually seems to enhance) pro athletes coordination.

ASk, mark mcGuire, SAmmy Sosa, A-rod. Shit, all of the really. At least 90% back in the day.

I doubt Shawn Lane stressed his muscles, joints, tendons and central nervous system the way the other guys did in their heavy weight/high repetition workouts.

From bodybuilding.com:
Your CNS is responsible for generating muscular contractions in all types of training, so when you stack workout upon workout, eventually it can tire out. As a result of this general fatigue, you will be weaker and slower in all of your movements.”

I saw DT and skinny Petrucci back in 95. It was then I realized I could fall asleep standing up.
Saw them only once in 2002. I was in awe at the musicianship and great sound but kind of bored at the same time. An odd concert experience. And to tie this in to the topic at hand, I ran into Chris Jericho in the parking lot prior to the show. I shouted out, “Hey I know you”. He turned around, probably expecting a WWE fanboy, and then I said, “you’re the singer of Fozzy!” He briefly smirked and then walked away with his pals.
