Hope someone does a comparison with the Cantrell 20 watt. This sounds great but might be too similar to what I already have. The JJ would probably be higher gain and more metal than this or my other Friedmans.

To my ears from someone using the PT v 2 for rehearsals and as a back up gigging, it's voiced very similar to an EL loaded head. It's the smaller transformer that makes it sound a little less 'big' for lack of better description. Dave could have used one EL but he knows best and used 2 84's for a reason??
The PT Videos does sound big, for a little amp. It's a great amp, for sure. No doubt.

I wish Dave would make the JEL-100 a regular production amp. It's about the only Friedman that I've been really interested in, but I missed out on the limited edition, and I'm not gonna pay what they're going for used. I'd be more likely to see if Nic @ Ceriatone could mod the King Kong to JEL specs.

The JEL-20 does sound pretty good though, but some of the low end in PT's demo seemed a little muddy or something. Maybe the gain is too high, or his pups are too hot.

If you want JEL spec use a 2203 / 2204 based amp. It’s a very simple mod.

Had a Friedman 20 watt amp.
Jumped up to a 40 watt Friedman amp.
But sold that one too...

Not that I'd go Friedman again, but if I did, I wouldn't waste my time on his 20 watter's.
Just the size difference in tone is beyond noticeable.
The 20 watt would never sound good again to me.

It’s only a handful of parts to swap out.
It’s not much more gain than a regular jcm800. YouTube videos can be very deceiving.
I owned a JEL at one time also. I preferred my 2203 boosted.

That said this little 20w has a sat switch. The 100w does not.

I've thought about that too, although part of what I like about the JEL-100 is having two independent channels. That's why I was wondering if maybe the 2nd channel of the King Kong could be tweaked to JEL specs. Otherwise, the right OD in front of my 2203 could probably get me close :-)

Funny thing is Jake was using an EVH for years, until Dave got him to try a smallbox
