I actually think for live use these 20 watt amps are probabaly just right for a lot of stages with volume concerns. Also the Grab n Go factor is high. It wouldn’t cut it at an old school, practice room session and a nard hitting drummer though. I love 100 watters. It’s just ingrained in me that those are what I want, or need but in the last few years I just don’t need them being a home player now. But I still have a couple and the PS2 treats them right. But I really dig my Orange Brent Hinds, Marshall Origin 20H and the two multi power, 30 watt Boogies as well that rip on lower power settings. But I still would buy a 100 watter, if it has the sound I want. Big Iron will always have it’s place in rock n roll.
Big iron sounds amazing, and there's not a stage I play on that I can get it to the volume needed to make that sound lol. 20-watters have more than enough headroom for every gig I play, but I don't play metal and I know there's a difference.

I think the new JEL20 sounds great... but then I heard this video when it dropped yesterday 😮

Oo lala this sounds good. The new JEL has that Friedman hollow mids thing going which I just can't get behind. I still think nothing beats a Marshall with an OD. Everytime. I see guys boosting the JEL to tighten or shape. Which just leads me back to Marshall.

Here is Jake ripping a little 5 second spot in his Badlands prime. Listen to that tone. Marshall boosted baby.

I've always heard ungodly volumes were one of the keys to Jake's tone

Me too. and especially if you watch any newer live vids, you can tell hes pushing serious air.

The older Ozzy and badlands videos it's harder to tell, but still there

This seems a little like when Eric Clapton did that crossroads pedal, although I'm pretty sure these will sound better than that 😄

I'm guessing the idea is because JEL cranks and uses power saturation, this way your average home hobbyist can crank the 20w and get close?

I'm just exhausted with the whole lunchbox/mini thing at this point though

Saw him with that Wicked Alliance project at a medium size club in the early 90’s. He had 5 or 6 5150 full stacks and they were all cranked. It was when he was playing ESP guitars. It was terrible. I left after about 4-5 songs.

They were all cranked? That sounds like someone created a recipe for fizzy mush guitar tone, 5150s definitely sound best with some headroom and wiggle room

Not even. I equate them more to a McDonalds happy meal.

I can appreciate a lunchbox that's meant to be a home practice tool, and is specced and priced accordingly; this trend towards companies trying to make "the best of both worlds" is so overdone, and beating such a dead horse, that it's like a modern SNL skit

Yes they were cranked. This was the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, maybe 1000 capacity when it was crammed full. I was right up front…for a very short time. He played horrible too, like he had not picked up a guitar in years. Using the Rhythm channel you can run them cranked and they are ok, for me anyway, but it was unbearably loud!
Same thing when I saw Loudness in a small club, 2 DSL halfstacks cranked…and Uli Roth in a small theater In Pittsburgh with his old Marshall full stack. They all play stadium volumes…what they grew up with I think.

Saw Jake with Red Dragon Cartel in Cleveland on the first tour. He was playing on the smaller stage at a venue called The Agora. Had two 5153 stacks up there and it was unbearably loud. I stayed all the way in the back, and even though I like some volume at shows, this was way too much.

He did play great though and I really liked the setlist. Played a lot of Badlands and was still closing with Bark At The Moon back then.

I've only EVER used the rhythm channel on 5150s, the red channel is completely unusable to me in every way, so that makes some sense

I've been to (and played at) a million gigs and never seen a show where the guitar player completely cranked a half stack in a club like that lol

Loudest was probably children of bodom, Alexi was still using his lee Jackson preamps with like half a dozen HH solid state power amps through three stacks - he still didn't have them dimed out though.

I use to say this. After Cameron helped me with my Jet City 20 my mind was changed completely. So much so that I sold off most of my big amps.
Yep....my Bogner Atma(s) were the first that got me over that hurdle....no longer anti

Sounds like he still likes his volume. Never been to the Agora in Cleveland, one of these days would like to.
Been to many shows at Columbus Newport which used to also be named Agora. Itnis quite a bit bigger than Alrosa was. Saw Badlands on their first tour there. I remember him having an Orange Marshall head. That place is big enough so his volume was fine.

Same way I used them too…normal gain input too.
I can’t say for sure Loudness was dimed but he was stinking loud! Uli for sure was. After that show he had a meet and greet. Got in line to get my cd signed and talk to him. He asked me what I thougjt of the show…I said it was great bla blah…then I said man you play loud. He was totally confused. 😁

Why was the 100 watter a Limited Edition? He's got so many models he should have made it available.

Now if he recorded the first Badlands album with this kind of tone it might have been God tier for me…lol
(Damn I love 70’s bass tones)

A lot of folks on this forum are slamming this amp. I'm no lover of lower watt el84 amps, but just want to point out...
I've seen many on other forums and the Friedman FB group going nuts over this amp. It'll probably sell well, until it fizzles out.
I don't care much for the Friedman, Mesa or Orange dual el84 amps. The modernish preamps aren't served well by the limited powered section, imo.
I do dig the Vox AC15C1, Marshall 1974x and 2061x. They seem to have a more organic vibe.
I think Friedman should come out with a 4xel84 amp that has a Vox clean channel(with bright switch, mv, and top boost/normal switch), and a BE dirty channel. Kind of like the Smallbox 50, but different. It would have angelic cleans to rocking crunch on one channel, and a modern dirty side on the other. Overall master volume for both channels on the footswitchable effects loop. I think that amp would cover a lot of ground and sell well.

People are noting the amp sounds better in the demos where the amp is plugged into a cab OTHER than the matching 1X12. That G12M-65 Creamback will only enhance any possible fizz.

One of the biggest complaints about those Marshall studio 20 watt reissues is that they are way too loud . Go to any retailer who sells them and you will see many comments about how ridiculously loud they are.

More people are living closer together than ever these days and 100 watt amps are just a no go .
The SV20 certainly is. The volume taper has no mercy - I had one.

I've owned a couple of the V2 PT-20's. They are more forgiving with a much better volume taper, but they suffer from the same fate as many EL84 amps.. They can be loud as hell, but the headroom is gone at 9:30-10 o'clock, and they just mush out from there.
