I don’t know…like his tunes and playing, but his tones were never that good imo. Cranked muddy Marshall tone.
100% I think we translate 'great tone' from that album because there is a great riff, killer song and over the top plant ish vocals =killer right?? Listen live it's not great tone, but he is a great player!

Is Jake’s tone something people really chase?
I'm with you, George. I love his playing but never thought his tone was special. However, I do like his raw Marshall tones from Badlands but anyone can get those with a good stock Marshall. I think those tones fit their music.

Sure, I may or may not like certain tones, but if the song /playing /performance is good and interesting that is the main thing for me.

Yep, I remember reading an interview with him when the first Badlands was coming out. He was saying it was very different from Ozzy going for a 70’s kinda vibe. I would say he achieved that goal pretty well. I only have Voodoo Highway, it is good I think.

That first Badlands album had fantastic tone.
Yes it did...and the second IMO. But, all it is really is a slightly boosted Marshall. I can get that all day with any one of my Marshalls. Of course, I can't play like Jake...lol

I think the new JEL20 sounds great... but then I heard this video when it dropped yesterday 😮

Yeah I was there that day getting my MOAB upgrades to the Plus + status. My all time favorite amp hands down.

On paper, the Friedman amps should be the perfect amps for me. In practice.... I have hated everyone that I have ever tried. I hear some of the same annoying things in the JEL20 that turned me off to the Friedman sound. I'm glad that others have found their tones with them...

I never thought his playing was anything special either. Ozzy should have stuck with Joe Holmes.

Until they make a signature set of motorized, imitation skin gloves, wired to a chip with his brain downloaded into it, there’s not much with his name on it I need. His playing is so good I love Ultimate Sin, even though it has some of the worst hard rock/metal rhythm tone I’ve ever heard…lol Badlands tone has this congested quality to it that drives me nuts. Doesn’t sound as big and open as a 1959 should. But that could be down to the engineer?

I love Friedman amps because there is something for everyone. I don't think this amp would be an ideal band amp, but maybe. I think for bedroom players or someone needing a big of a volume drop, it is good.

I have two 5150-III 6l6 amps (one stealth) and a Pink Taco V2. Similar "feel" and sound but of the EVH can get my tone, and it does, I'm houng to use that. I love Friedmans though.

I actually think for live use these 20 watt amps are probabaly just right for a lot of stages with volume concerns. Also the Grab n Go factor is high. It wouldn’t cut it at an old school, practice room session and a nard hitting drummer though. I love 100 watters. It’s just ingrained in me that those are what I want, or need but in the last few years I just don’t need them being a home player now. But I still have a couple and the PS2 treats them right. But I really dig my Orange Brent Hinds, Marshall Origin 20H and the two multi power, 30 watt Boogies as well, that rip on lower power settings. But I still would buy a 100 watter, if it has the sound I want. Big Iron will always have its place in rock n roll.

One of the biggest complaints about those Marshall studio 20 watt reissues is that they are way too loud . Go to any retailer who sells them and you will see many comments about how ridiculously loud they are.

More people are living closer together than ever these days and 100 watt amps are just a no go .
