Anyone compare a JEL100 vs a Wizard MC I or II?

I have both. Very different amps.

The JEL100 800 side is great, the Plexi side needs to be cranked like a plexi.

The Modern Classic is pretty tight with great clarity and plenty of gain.

Fantastic, thank you! Have you by any chance done a side by side recording? No worries if not!

For me it’s just about something special that’s there.
If I sell enough stuff I also may try to get 50w EL34 or 6V6 for contrast, but I was just referring before to pure headroom/horsepower and punch, which I feel is what mainly distinguishes wizards from other amps and I try to play up amp’s inherently unique strengths up as much as I can

@ZEN Amps massive thanks for the note! if you've noticed your Wizard amp vids generate a bunch of views over the last few weeks, thats just me watching them over and over again to figure my options out lol.

I was surprised to see the MC video end with the statement "others have found it useful for metal but we could not"...then i saw that Leon Todd was in love with the MTL as his favorite amp. I do not listen to much metal beyond 80s thrash and then Children of Bodom/early In Flames, so would you say the MTL is better than the Modern Classic? Would the Hybrid in your view be the best compromise for that raw Wizard tone and a little more gain optionality?
Hard to summarise too much in a few words but to clarify yes, the MC can do metal. We just found that there's better options for a big, modern sound. The MC is more in the Marshall camp (modded Jubilee really) than say the MTL, Uber Ultra, 5150 etc, so if metal is your primary thing you might find it's better suited to the classic kind than then modern.

Not sure about a hybrid, I'm sure it would sound great but no experience. I never got around to mocking one up with the MC and MTL, I should try it.

Ah ok, so if i use my Herbert Mk3 and Mark V for metal (and am beyond pleased with those two), and just want that characteristic Wizard sound, the MCII would be more than enough in your view?

If you do decide to do the MTL vs. MC, I for one would certainly appreciate it lol...tell Leon to come play the MTL some more lol, he seemed to enjoy it quite a bit haha

very cool, this is terrific to hear. Between the MCII and the MTL, did you feel the MTL having more gain lost that raw wizard tone that would tear right through a mix?

Aside from the new info about the Hell Razor which I need to delve into more, I'm leaning MCII vs. MTL but perhaps go with the Hybrid or just the MTL for more optionality.

I think key for me is retaining the traditional Wizard ability to cut through a mix. The more I learn about recording, the more I've come to appreciate keeping the gain low and getting a clean signal into the DAW and then adjusting the amps "true character" in post.
Between the MC1 and MTL, the MC1 wins by more than a mile for me. Everything in the MTL I have heard is low mid focused and smaller sounding.
MC2 is more saturated compared to the MC1. The MC1 has plenty of gain and sounds huge in a room. I play in power trios, so I need a big sounding amp. Gain is usually around 2:00 with the amp boost off and it is plenty.

I have still not heard any good recordings, vids or clips of the Hell Razor. Not saying there aren’t any, just that I have not heard any.

If I get another it would be the MC25. That is the one that has my interest.

I keep seeing a lot of "mint" condition ones get listed although i recently asked Rick about a 6L6 MTL that's on reverb and turned out it left the factory as an EL34! So who knows what people are doing to theirs after they leave the factory

If you are referring to this ad… it was originally a 6L6 model. It has the custom 6L6 transformers. Not sure what Rick is thinking other than wanting you to buy a new one. lol @WizardSouth-JP had it built originally and I got it from him. I sold it. The guy selling it now got it from the guy I sold it to (that guy got a HR).

Yep. I'm the guy Matt sold it to. I sold it once I bought a Hell Razor. The MTL was a killer amp but the HR overlapped and did much more so I didn't see much reason in keeping both. However, I have kept my MCII because there's something about it that I enjoy quite a bit so it and the HR covers miles of ground.

Ah man if you have those two amps and you want an amazing rock amp then the MC is worth owning once in your life. Do it.

@RedB4Black @Ryan990

Yes! That’s the one, lol I sent Rick the S/N and his response was that it was a 2014 that left the factory as an EL34 :ROFLMAO:

It definitely got me leaning towards a new one instead of used…but you guys would buy that amp without issues?

You two have an opinion on the Hybrid?

Yea I’ve got those two and then a bunch of vintage and non vintage modded Marshall’s, a couple of friedmans, original SLO and a Cameron Aldrich so Marshall territory is well covered. Nothing compared to your collection and a lot of the collections on here!

It’s more that Wizard raw sound territory that I think would be a nice addition!

Probably just gonna do a MC2…debating the MTL and needing to learn more about the Hell Razor (but seems overkill for me personally).

Appreciate all your time and also the vids you and crew put together!

For what it’s worth, having had an mcii and hell razor within a few weeks of each other, the hell razor could do everything the mcii could do but the opposite was not true at all- the hell razor is better even for non modern metal applications in my opinion

Well that’s interesting, it’s better for non modern metal too? Did not expect that! Ok well that just means I have more videos to watch lol

I had a 1996 MC with C transformer and 2016 MTL with V transformers and much preferred the MTL. While it does have more low mid thickness, it’s still not a super low mid dominant amp the way a Recto or Uberschall is and it sounded a lot bigger and more robust in the room than that particular MC I had, but maybe the later MC’s or MCII’s would’ve held up better vs that MTL

If I ever learn to record well or Yehuda makes a new clip then maybe we will finally will get a solid Hell Razor clip. Wasn’t until recently where I heard good MC or MTL clips either (not that it really matters much)

In terms of just rawness I feel by nature my vintage Marshall’s or really any amps made before the ‘90’s will have the edge in being more raw/rough around the edges. Wizards are very raw for a non-vintage amp. Impressively close to vintage amps in that regard

If you’re playing stuff like in flames, children of bodom or thrash then I don’t at all see how a hell razor is overkill (opposite if anything). If you were playing stuff like priest, maiden or less heavy stuff maybe I could sort of see where you’re coming from, but even then not really. If anything, most guys need to boost their mc’s or MTL’s to get into the territory for the metal bands you mentioned and still can have some trouble being totally where they want to be for it

I was listening to yehuda and Matt’s earlier, can you link me to any vids you might have done? Just trying to watch as many as I can to get a feel

For wizards more than many other amps the clips are limited and don’t seem to as accurately show how the amp is in person and imo not worth waiting a year or more for some decent clips to finally surface lol. Besides the opinions here maybe Rick can also advise what he thinks would be best for you want

I didn’t own any recording gear when I had my MTL or MC. I can try in a few weeks to make and PM you clips of the Hell Razor, but I suck at recording lol and hope I don’t do injustice to it or mislead about how the amp actually sounds

@braintheory all good dude, I appreciate the time you and the others have taken to help me out

I referenced COB and In Flames more as reference for the heaviest stuff I listen to. I’ll attempt to play in that vein maybe once a month lol

I’m a 80s/90s guy and fwiw the Herbert and Mark V kind of have the modern stuff covered

Perhaps I should have been clearer with my goals. I really see the Wizard amps as a tool for layering/texturing vs being the main tone for me.

That’s why I continue to lean MC/MTL….dont even know what to think about the Hybrid option at this point haha.

Will definitely be giving some thought to the Hell Razor

This video has that 6L MTL compared to a 50w MC 6L. It’s actually a MK2 with the mid sweep on the front and lead bright on the back. It was built in 2021 or 2022. It’s a killer amp. I liked it a lot. I only sold because I got a 60w KT66 MTL that at could also run 6L6 that sounded just as good. I was definitely one of the better Wizards I’ve owned
