Anyone compare a JEL100 vs a Wizard MC I or II?

This video has that 6L MTL compared to a 50w MC 6L. It’s actually a MK2 with the mid sweep on the front and lead bright on the back. It was built in 2021. It’s a killer amp. I liked it a lot. I only sold because I got a 60w KT66 MTL that at could also run 6L6 that sounded just as good. I was definitely one of the better Wizards I’ve owned

Right on dude, don’t know why Rick led me astray lol

From your perspective can it cover MCII territory?

Close enough for me. But you’re gonna have to deal with the fact that you’ll eventually have to buy both to know for sure. Lol

LOL I ain’t buying 2! As long as I can pull the gain back and get that raw wizard snarl to layer on top of my other amps, I’m good to go…trusting you all here

@braintheory all good dude, I appreciate the time you and the others have taken to help me out

I referenced COB and In Flames more as reference for the heaviest stuff I listen to. I’ll attempt to play in that vein maybe once a month lol

I’m a 80s/90s guy and fwiw the Herbert and Mark V kind of have the modern stuff covered

Perhaps I should have been clearer with my goals. I really see the Wizard amps as a tool for layering/texturing vs being the main tone for me.

That’s why I continue to lean MC/MTL….dont even know what to think about the Hybrid option at this point haha.

Will definitely be giving some thought to the Hell Razor
Understood. The thing is also once you get it maybe it could possibly serve as more than just layering, who knows and also depending what you like maybe it could even possibly send those 2 packing for modern sounds (different flavors though). The only one I remember with a Hybrid was MetalHeadMike on here and he didn’t seem to care for it as much. It didn’t seem from what I’ve heard like it was exactly the middle ground of an MC and MTL than some were hoping for, but like all wizards I’m sure still an overall great amp

I had a 1996 MC with C transformer and 2016 MTL with V transformers and much preferred the MTL. While it does have more low mid thickness, it’s still not a super low mid dominant amp the way a Recto or Uberschall is and it sounded a lot bigger and more robust in the room than that particular MC I had, but maybe the later MC’s or MCII’s would’ve held up better vs that MTL

If I ever learn to record well or Yehuda makes a new clip then maybe we will finally will get a solid Hell Razor clip. Wasn’t until recently where I heard good MC or MTL clips either (not that it really matters much)
Yeah I wish I knew how to record when I made the first clip haha- even the phone micced clip I got sounds way better to me- but I’ll get a proper one eventually- definitely want to do the amp justice

I’d pass on the Hybrid too. I didn’t like it as much as either the MTL or the MC2. Get one or the other. Dump the Diezel and get both.

If you ever are in NYC feel free to come try any of my amps

lol I love my Herbie…gonna go with the MTL…middle ground between MC2 and HR I guess…

Thanks all for the time you all took to walk me through the finer details

Ironic I end up with an amp that seemingly a lot of you have owned :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

If you are a Herbert fan, I bet you’d love the Mi beta- although they are crazy hard to find

Never heard of it, will have to check it out!

But a Wizard was the last amp on my list, I’m genuinely done

I’m an old fart who doesn’t care much for modern/newer amps, assuming that’s what this MI Beta is

Yeah all the MTL clips etc sound very scooped. Probably a great sound for at home, but for me would never work. All the Hell Razor clips sound too metal and narrow ( for lack of a better term) for me.

I first heard Wizard in ‘96 at Namm and was mind blowing. It would have been a MC1 that Rick demoed for me. Took me ten years to finally get one. Great amp.

What do you think of this MTL clip: https://www.rig-talk.com/forum/threads/nad-wizard-mtl-mkii.287271/page-7#post-3693045
The MTL I had sounded similar. It was more scooped than the MC I had, but not as scooped as some other amps IME. I don't find my Hell Razor narrow at all (if anything I find it wider than the MC and MTL), but I can see what you mean in the clips on YouTube. They don't sound good for whatever reason. I didn't get anything out of the MC or MTL I had that I can't in the Hell Razor besides maybe just some lower gain/mellower rock tones from the MC I had

That’s basically how my MTL, your old amp, sounds in the room, and it’s viciously glorious.

Scooped metal is what I hear. Nothing wrong with that, just not a tone I go for. My MC doesn’t sound like that at all. Gainwise it can do that, but the voicing is much different.

very cool, this is terrific to hear. Between the MCII and the MTL, did you feel the MTL having more gain lost that raw wizard tone that would tear right through a mix?

Aside from the new info about the Hell Razor which I need to delve into more, I'm leaning MCII vs. MTL but perhaps go with the Hybrid or just the MTL for more optionality.

I think key for me is retaining the traditional Wizard ability to cut through a mix. The more I learn about recording, the more I've come to appreciate keeping the gain low and getting a clean signal into the DAW and then adjusting the amps "true character" in post.
If you want to 'cut through the mix' then I'd steer clear of the MTL. I had a 2012 MTL 50w, the mids were pretty well scooped and hollow sounding even with the mid knob turned up. The MC100 I had was much better in that regard.
It's in the nature of most Wizards to have less midrange/different mids than say a Marshall. So none of them will cut like one...but, they are bright enough to still cut. Other than the MTL I had.
