i'm not going to use one on a loud ass stage any time soon, but for just sitting around playing alone, the old snark has been working just fine for me for 10+ years. i have a tu-2 if i need something more solid to plug into, but yeah i don't really see the big deal.

Yeah I get and I never did either but once you really get into the intonation game when setting up something with a Floyd for example or something floating especially when your setting up, the differences really become apparent. I was pretty surprised to be honest so much so afterwards I just stopped using Clip Ons in general.

It's convenient when needed and it's not a bad choice and obviously on a live set it makes more sense vs a cellphone but in general just surprised how damn good the cellphone tuners are by comparison and better based off room volume for reference and then going back to the Turbo for a separate reference and separate baseline.

Back in college they weren't that great but now they are pretty damn fantastic and these are the free ones.

whos using a clip on for intonation!? i think most people know better than that, but who knows.

Do you use your cellphone for for email too? Would you survive a day without a cellphone if it got left at home ? Cuz you know, fuck cellphones in general hahahaha.

Same goes for LP users but for opposite reasons and the damn G string......
My Norlin LPC never goes out of tune…ever. It’s prob the most solid guitar I have in that respect. And I have a Tele ( it never goes out either tbh).

True but aside from that just bringing up the differences in results in overall performance for such purpose and overall tuning and arguably "better" tuning from a cellphone relative to most clip ons on average today......

Nevermind a real tuner pedal as another baseline and reference by comparison to either.

A cell phone cannot be more accurate than a Peterson. Even your cell phone case could be affecting vibrational transmission whereas the clip on tuner has a direct link to the headstock of the guitar where the tuners are located=precision tuning.

Let's just but it this way, using different Snarks from the standard to tight version on average after using them to tune or intonate the margins were way off when using a free Cellphone tuner nvm an actual tuner like a Turbo Tuner for feedback and a separate point of reference and baseline......

On average the clip on counterparts performed to a lower standard in that sense and either a cellphone nvm the tuner pedal were better in that regard.

I imagine maybe something like a Peterson Clip on may be as good as a cellphone or better but in general using thr Snarks the cellphone came out on top IME.:dunno:

Read your thread title big dawg, "best clip on tuners 2025". Peterson is the best and your cell phone is playing second fiddle to a good Peterson tuner. Peterson is legend in the industry so if you expect your cell phone to compete I would say you need to download the Peterson app for your phone. It's called iStrobosoft and it's 10 bucks if you got that kind of sweet moolah. Until you get a Peterson you're just whistling dixie my man.

Yeah I imagine they may be better than a cellphone but in either case I just wouldn't use one vs an actual tuner in a pedal format as an actual pedal is arguably better too in regards to intonation, set up and overall tuning in general.

Also for the simple fact that having a tuner on the headstock affects tracking, tracing, attack, sound and tone to a degree and some are fine and comfortable with that and that is okay but overall I'm not and it's really up to ones choice and discretion and what they are comfortable with aside from the other things mentioned.

In a sense when you use a clip on on a headstock your not really tuning to or getting the real sound of your guitar IMO or the same sound and feel as without it on and in that sense tuning with a clip on defeats the purpose IMO of properly tuning ones guitar or getting a proper representation of it one can say no matter how good they can tune or may possibly be.

Every quarter inch plug you add to your chain causes tone loss, negatively affecting not only your base tone, but accuracy in tuning whereas a clip on makes DIRECT CONTACT to the headstock area providing the utmost in accuracy.

You were not able to pick the clip on tuner portions out in a blind test. Therefore tracking tracing attack sound and tone are not affected substantially enough. Meanwhile your floor unit is literally leaking tone out of those cheap jacks, switch, and additional wiring. It's critical to have DIRECT CONTACT without wires, cabling, and other electronic components. The only way I can visualize a cell phone tuner being superior is if it's fully mounted in a headstock rout with the protective cover removed.

Got clips of that?

It is subjective in that sense and these really aren't factors one can pick up on a clip and as said it's really up to the player to use their discretion, what they are comfortable with and go from there.

For me what I noticed using a Turbo Tuner and Cellphone vs a Snark on average for example was more hair, more dynamics, more fluid and smooth note separation and more air for lack of a better term in regards to feel. The pedal and Cellphone had a lower margin of error when dialing in overall as well and tuned to a higher degree.

When using both a Turbo Tuner and a Cellphone as a baseline for feedback off each other it just got better because one can take a room volume for reference and the signal Straight through the pedal and again use ones discretion to tune up when setting up for better intonation, fine tuning and tuning in general.

For me that is noticeable and aside from other reasons as said using the Snarks the Cellphone isn't so bad and yeah I imagine Peterson Clip ons are much better in that regard and well maybe there isn't better and nothing really is perfect but IME the Cellphones aren't bad, it's good to use different baselines and tuners for reference and the Turbo Tuner is the shit ^_^

As previously mentioned, this is about 2025's best clip on, and the Snark isn't the best clip on, the Peterson is, so I'm not sure why you bring up the Snark when they are roundly though of as a cheap, low buck, budget tuner. It's imperative that your tests be conducted with the highest quality cabling, and you'll still find signal loss and tone choke with your floor unit, and will only be complicating your rig with unnecessary wiring. Simple is clean and clean is accurate and a Peterson is as simple and clean and accurate as you can get. If you were using the istrobosoft you may have some added merit to your cell phone claims but as I've mentioned before, cell phones are for making phone calls first, not tuning guitars whereas a Peterson unit is specifically designed to give you your best tone today.

Now obviously budget will play a part in your decisions and ten dollars for a tuner app may or may not be seen as steeply priced but for those who want the best for their rig Peterson is the most trusted name in guitar tuning both yesterday, today, and into the future as well.
