Just get the Wizard and call it done. I had an XTC and the MC sent it on it's way.

Pretty much the same story with me. Although, I keep going back to the well and trying more XTC's, thinking I will like them better the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc. time around.

Tried the 20th yet?

If you want the sound of a Marshall my first stop would be a Marshall. Given the tones you reference, have you tried a Vintage Modern?

THIS

I've owned a lot of nice, boutique amps over the past several years and am [happily] back in the Marshall camp (2203X). It's so simple, cleans-up so well with the volume know, and just has that kerrang that I love.

For lead work, the Bogner XTC blue and red channels are hard to beat. But I find that I pretty much can't stand them for rhythm work. Too compressed. And that was on my old XTC Classic, as well as my friend's older (90s) 101B. I want the immediate response and, hard-hitting roar/crunch of a Marshall for my rhythm work. Bogners don't have that.

How does the Modern Classic compare to the Modern Classic II? I heard some say the the Modern Classic is better.

I think that's kind of like saying red is a better colour than blue. You know what I mean?

It all comes down to the listener's ears and personal preference. They are both fantastic amps.

No, and I won't be. I'm DONE with XTC's for good. I prefer my 20th Shiva over the 101B and Classic. Enough is enough!

Agreed. Although, I find the Shiva has a LOT more of "it" than the Ecstasy.

With that in mind.....

Jean-Philippe, if you are looking for Marshall tones, why aren't you considering a Shiva instead of an Ecstasy?

Have a look at the Splawn Quick Rod. Great marshall tones.

Yeah, I had an EL34 Shiva before the XTC and remember it's killer clean channel, but can't quite remember what its crunch was like. I know that I liked the roar of it when hitting the front-end with my OCD.

True dat!

My friend sure loves his QR and Lickliter Rage (prototype) running in stereo. He finds that it doesn't have that liquid sustain for leads of his old 101b, but for rhythm work it's HUGE and chunky.

But, but... the 20th!
It's such an improvement, yadda yadda

It's true that the Shiva can dish out some awesome tones, it's much darker than a classic Marshall though

Agreed. But, that is a good thing (IMO).

Why not just buy a Marshall for Marshall tones?

I know... it's a crazy concept any more on gear boards (outside the Marshall Forum).

This is what's been giving me my Marshall tones as of late...

What y'all don't understand is Wizards have Marshall tones, but they sound better than Marshalls.
They're like Marshall 2.0

Hi all, thx for all these answers.

So, there a lot a possibilities:

Xtc why not but 20th el34 or 100b only.
Shiva, why not, when i first look for an marshall crunch lamp, some advise me about the shiva
I Really have to listen sample carefully.

Fargen olde 800

And of course wizard mc2.

I do not want a particular jtm45 sound but i want a great warm clear and light crunch sound AND boosted crunch woody, fat and dynamic like a superlead boosted or a fat jcm800

For the cherry bomb, i was not catch by the sample.

I would go with ANY Germino, or Tophat Emplexador. Those will get the GOODS for sure IMO.

In relation to the red: back away from the XTC. Even though it is a fantastic amp, it is NOT going to get you the Marshall tones you crave.

In relation to the blue: why not get your JTM 45 tone from a pedal going into the clean channel of whatever amp you finally decide on?

Can't disagree, but these amps are not overly flexible for gigging situations, given they are only one channel. If Jean-Philippe likes to ride his guitar's volume control, maybe a single channel amp is a non-issue?.....

For pure Plexi sounds, Wizard also has the Vintage Classic
Holy shit, did I just buy one of those?!?
the MC rhythm channel cranked with the boost engaged is the Highway to Hell tone. Lead channel without the boost on is Back in Black tone. What more is needed? Ive had my MC a very long time now. Still a killer amp. May need to give one of those smaller ones a go someday

The VC is just different
It controls like a Plexi and sounds like a damn good Plexi
Used to have 1987x, the VC is just that much better
+ the PPIMV (or whatever it is) on the back gives it much versatility
