Can't wait for my Larry Amplification Schaffer preamp...

Hi Larry,

Can you tell me why there is no boutique amp builder that built power amps? I think that must be a revisited concept to match those preamps you made and some from others amp builders. For me buying a hand wired preamp like yours with a power amp made in series doesn't make sense... I don't say that all power amp on the market are not good, but nothing is really exciting. What's your opinion?

Bob Gjika has built something interesting for Shawn Lane years ago, no one followed Gjika on this path. Stereo with the possibility of a wet/dry setup hi-end built etc...

Pretty cool isn't it?

Damn what is the story with that rig????
The pic come from a guy who have a collection of the Gjika rackmount era amp/preamps. I don't think that Gjika build power amps anymore. Cool concept, stereo, rackmount advantage, etc...

$3600 US for a single rack space preamp?? Seriously??

And you've gotta wait 12 to 14 months for it to arrive??

For $3600 you should fly to the US, sleep on my couch, build it in my living room, and be finished within a week.

Larry said it once and TBH i have to agree with him. people will spend 4..5..6.. even $10,000 on some of the best guitars ever made. but when it comes to amplifiers and preamps it all of a sudden is a burden.

Larry's work is world renown for the best build quality AND tonal benefits - if you've heard anything iced earth, you arent hearing a CCV - you're hearing this design.

id pay it all day long if i could swing it. Best of the best and it will keep its value over time - built like a brick shithouse

I tried to find some youtube videos of people playing a Larry amp but I couldnt find any, anyone got some links?

I remember pre-2008 crash the 939 was one of the ultimate cred amps to drop 6K on.

Sounds good imo.

I'm a cheap bastard most of the time, but I bought the preamp and have no regrets

Pretty much what I was thinking as well. I don't know if I would like it or not, but to knock it without playing it is silly. If it ends up having the tone and feel that a player is looking for, why not spend $3600 seeing as you know its meticulously hand-built with the best quality components and top-notch craftsmanship? And what does the fact that it's a single rack space have to do with value? I never knew that tone was proportionate to the number rack spaces a unit requires...the Mako MAK 4 must sound god-like.

Agreed on allparts esp the Mako MAK 4

I spent $3800 on my Natas and it is the final metal amp I will need, no more shipping fucking amps, no more driving to fests to play the possible new amp, it is all done. Finished. Complete. Does not hurt that the build is on par with Larry's stuff though it is not turret construction.

The knitting circle of pricing cracks me up.

That is some of the nicest work ive ever seen. Super clean. Love it!

That's out of the league of most musicians - but the next day they suddenly buy a new car for 25,000

I know, old thread got resurrected and all. Great looking build but above is a horrible analogy. Are you saying your preamp is the Toyota Camry of preamps   I'd think it should be the BMW M5.

Anyway, value for money is up to the indiviual and there is enough choice in the market place for us all to decide what is worth it. Stuff like this is way out of my price range but it doen't bother me if it's not for someone else. Plus I play enough stuff that sounds incredible, that's a lot less, I don't feel I'm necessarily missing out on the high dollar boutique stuff. I will say that when you find the sound that was in your head there is no thought on how much it cost.

Good luck with it Larry. I'll always remember your great input on the metro forum when the kits were still going strong.

i love the post "who is jon schaffer" really put the fork in this post. i like his plsying but the guy come across as a dick. very arrogant. he makes great music but that;s it.

Schaffer was using Diezel the last time I saw him.
Because it seems to happen every few months again and again, that anywhere on this world any guy is waking up from sleep, and after he's rubbed his eyes then he's writing on any forum something like "Jon is using B*, D*, E* or even F* amps meanwhile" or "I've seen Jon life with a $%/ amp..." or "Jon has used in a studio the "§$/($ amp..." or, or, ... Jon today has sent me some photos, which his guitar tech has taken today, showing Jon 'at work' for his new album:

@ snowdog: What about your new eyeglasses? You already got it?

Still any doubts anywhere? :gethim:

:D

Well, my apologies if anyone got their feathers ruffled, I'm not affiliated with Diezel or anyone else. I will change my observation to : Jon was standing 5 feet away or so from a half stack with a Diezel head on it that appeared to be powered up, I was close enough to clearly see the logo. This was at a show in Cleveland a few years ago.

I was certainly not trying to discredit Larry Amplification in any way. His sound is one of the best.

I think that he's playin on Marshall at the Rock Hard Festival 2011 in the Amphitheater Gelsenkirchen Germany

As stated before though he may just be using those Marshall's as power for the preamp. Hard to say with that kind of footage. Man, unless I see a guitar cord going from the guitar into the head I don't take any live footage at face value when it comes to gear actually used.

The preamp is sitting on top of the road case to the left of the Marshall half stacks.

On TGP I saw a video that shows George Lynch on a gig playin' on a Marsha hyde beind his Lynchbox... A couple of Lychbox owners was desapointed about that, In fact that happens all the time. Bonamassa and his signature amps don't try to follow, it will cost you lot of dow. His rig change faster than I change my t-shirt.

As I've already stated a while ago in another topic, on tour Jon is using exclusively his DINO heads, but when he has to fly to just one festival, then he's using the preamp and is using rented Marshall heads just as power amps. The reason is, to save some shipping cost and this is the reason, why he had me building him a preamp at all.
