Did Dave Friedman find the josé mods behind Van Halen 1 ?

Curious if I am the only guitarist on the planet who doesn't want to sound anything like EVH? ?‍♂️

I’m a “casual” VH fan, not looking to play or sound like him in the least, and since I had that bad dream of rig-talkers paying big bucks lined up to stick their face in eddies bare ass cheeks and sniff farts through his unwashed asshole, I just can’t listen and not laugh anymore. Really kind of ruined it for me

The thing is, I guaran-goddamn-tee people woulda paid money to shove their faces in evhs unwashed asshole, like no joke lmfao

I was a demo guitarist for Ed (got hooked up with his crew by Kimbo Davis who was close with Hartley and who'd reached out on behalf of Ed's business manager Barbara Page). That ended getting me hooked into working (this was all on the side, I was/am a fund manager IRL) on the brand new VH website on the "Equipment" section. I wrote up Ed's equipment history, and would interview people critical to that history. Wayne Charvel, Lynn Ellsworth, Steve Blucher, etc. Anyway, I got the idea to interview someone but (I won't share the details) was concerned about some situations therein. I emailed the guy running the website sharing my concerns and asking whether it was worth pursuing, but Val got hold of it and tore me a new one. That was fun.

Anyway, I was on the inside of the camp (at least as "inside" as I could be from Dallas, TX) and got to know a ton of folks. Scotty, the old tour manager, was great in particular.

No, Ed was never ever online back then. But he eventually grew to hate the "History" section I'd authored (it was too distracting from the new merch) and had it axed. He was very nice though, and even after getting let go invited me backstage the next time they came through. Invited me out to 5150 to jam (seriously) but I was in the middle of getting married at the time and it just didn't work out. I am not a "starstruck" kind of guy so maybe that's why they all trusted me, but it also meant kinda blowing that opportunity.

It was interesting being there when the Sammy thing blew up, the Dave thing happened, and the Cherone thing came together.

And honestly, I harbor zero ill will with VAVH (her old email prefix).

PS When I occasionally share details of old equipment stuff, I might know what I'm talking about :-)
Always a killer story from you! Thanks for sharing that!

Being around those guys…I don’t want to share too much but immigrant kids have it hard, and they were stunted by early alcohol abuse, and in many ways got kinda “stuck” at the EQ level of a middle-schooler. Especially once you get the rockstar thing going.

They were very kind to me.

Now Mike was different, and didn’t seem into the whole thing as much (in that way reminds me a bit of Warren DeMartini). Mike comes across as pretty bright as well. I never was around Dave.

Anyway, don’t be star struck. These were just guys with real struggles and difficulties.

really interesting comments man, EVH actually talked a lot about how tough he had it as an immigrant in one of his final interviews

It’s a long one, but really really good

I love Randy Rhoads but his tone is... I'm not a fan of his raspy sound, like his cab speakers are coned with paper plates.

Here he is again. Doing it all wrong. No variac. No slave amp. No real mikes or cabs. No Jose!!!!! Ahhhhh!!!!!!

Hah, I just saw this video and came to this thread to post it. What a liar. :D

I can't believe this person would go out of his way to try and fool all of us like this. EVERYBODY knows you can't simply just get the EVH tone with a standard plexi and your hands, NO, there HAS to be a bunch of tricks and gadgets he used, which means that eventually I'll be able to discover the secrets and buy his tone with money! You know, instead of just having to face the fact that the only thing that's gonna do it is many hours on the fretboard in the woodshed.

Wait, so we have to find EVH's woodshed to train in before the tone is right? I suppose that makes sense, aromatic tonewood properties and all that. What if it's been torn down, is his tone lost forever then? Could we make a replica woodshed to get close (but of course those in the know will hear the difference)? Does anyone have pictures of his woodshed and maybe the grain patterns and knothole placements in the walls? What ratio of coke and booze should be rubbed into the structure? Was it a Jose woodshed?

I would have loved to have seen what Schenker did with Ozzy if MSG hadn't taken off. Two alcoholics who were prone to fits of booze rage touring together? I bet Schenker would have lasted a month before punching Ozzy out.
That would have been something to see, especially today where everyone has a camera/video in their pockets.
