Did Dave Friedman find the josé mods behind Van Halen 1 ?

You can try all the mods you like, the tone was in the street transformer supplying power to Sunset Studios and it was burnt in the recent fires. You’ll never get to sound like Eddie. The only choice now is seppuku.
There are multiple ways to one tone. However we would all like to know the original way haha.

Mh the slaving theory is clearly possible for running with the devil that's very close but still likes a small thing. Fot the slaving theory in the japanese book of the 78 tour you can see that eddie already slaved 2203 marshall amps which have way more gain and grit.

I believe you can get those kind of tones while achieving speaker distortion when vol is at max. But did ed really crank his amp in the studio ? He said that when his amp was attenuated it sounded so good. When an amp is attenuated speakers will not give this amount of distortion.
We all have enjoyed the banter and debate but you really need to read the room and listen to the clips posted within this thread and be honest about what you hear in them. You speak to people here like they have never investigated Ed's VH1 tones and that you share knowledge only you know of. It's an old topic and that's why people get sick of discussing it after actual clips from members prove it's a plexi/superlead.

We fully understand you like the Jose mods and they get you where you want to be gainwise and that's great... you do you... but the variaced and even unvariaced( Like Zens stock 69) good sounding/aggressive STOCK 67-72 plexi's and Superleads have everything heard on VH1 with the right aggressive player and with the exact signal chain it gets even closer. Mr Zen nails the tone with an UNVARIACED 69 Marshall with just a guitar and some plate reverb yet you continue on as if you are punking us.

This shows us that you are not really listening objectively to the clips people have posted here. I know you won't but please go back and listen intently to Zens' 69 clip and then listen to the Room Mic clips from the VH1 Session. You have no audible position to argue from, the Jose's amps sound and feel different to a CRANKED Plexi/Superlead, it is an undeniable fact unless you are deaf to the difference or you just wish to argue for the sake of arguing.

Dantravis has pointed out that many of the members here on RT that disagree with your conclusions either have extensive amp collections or have owned and played real 68, 69, 70, 71, 72 Marshalls and some have been down the VH1 rabbit hole for years sometimes decades and we are just not pontificating without actual experience playing the real amps in question. Until you play a great sounding 68 or later 100 WATT Marshall with original iron you are making judgment calls on pure speculation. I believe we have all made and substantiated our viewpoints on the subject, everyone is free to reach their own conclusions with the clips provided within this thread and it seems most prefer the plexis or superleads.

Are you sure you are not Dave Friedman punking us?

I get it. Unfortunately it’s now in the realm of religion. People searching and people offering new answers. There is no way to get the answers to all the exact Eddie specifics. But I get it. I’ve watched the Zapruder film way too many times myself.

This morning on the NORMAL channel of my MPII, the side that is stock ‘68.

I have a EP style echo running in the front (with consequent EP fet boost).

No Variac, no special mid pot, no fat cap.

These amps (I used to own 124XX) are just uber-harmonic city, and were kinda hard to tame. Which is why this circuit lasted about 10 months.

IMO
this is the closest to early VH tone from a production model being made today.
but what no clip can accurately predict is how it will feel under my fingers with my guitar and cab/fx.

You son of a bitch !

It feels just like an old late 60s Marshall with filtering and NFB on the lower end. Like an old pair of jeans.

Don’t you have those old 003 Pulsonics? You’d love it.
i’m certain i’d love it too. keen on what my friend has to say about the new Jose ‘25 should get to play one at NAMM. besides being a Friedman dealer he also has some tasty old plexis so i trust his opinion greatly!

your whole post was really cool to read but on this specific point, both Grover Jackson and Bob Daisley have independently confirmed (on their respective tone talk shows), that Randy wanted to leave Ozzy's band and just go back to his school/learn more guitar.

Bob even went far as sharing that Ozzy sucker punched Randy when Randy told him thats what he wanted.

Obviously we never got to find out the end of that beautiful story (cut too short) but it would have been fascinating. He might have just faded into the background never to be heard from again!
Randy was gonna do the live Sabbath covers album that became Speak Of The Devil , he was against it but Ozzy and Sharon talked him into it. After that he was gonna do another studio album and tour and then leave the band. Rudy Sarzo wrote about all that in his book that came out about 18yrs ago

I think Randy would have killed it on Symptoms of the Universe. But he was right, the Sabbath stuff just doesn't do it for me really. It drags more and is slower tempo. I know i will get flack for this but Sabbath was better with Dio.

Enough said. Time to lock the thread
I am all about free speech. I can see the need for a EVH topic area which has been suggested. Not the worse idea but this thread is easily ignored if that's what you want turn the channel. This is not hurting anyone. No reason to lock it.

Hey man, it’s a joke. It’s just the same shit being said over and over. I’m sure there won’t be anything getting locked up

I don’t know why anyone is against, wouldn’t it be wonderful to have everything Eddie in one place for easy access to info, interviews, live shows and everything else??

Given that there are so many good clips on youtube showcasing a simple Superlead or Plexi dimed and variac'd, maybe there are small component tweaks here or there like the 50K mid pot but the only remaining lingering question is, how much does the subtle boost from the echoplex make? I think we have also covered slaving ( likely to my ear on some albums and for volume) and EQ boost. With those two things, more than enough grind easily.

My one lingering question is the echoplex boost. How much diff is that making you think? I always think to Mattias Jabs who mentioned hot pickups with his echoplex in line into a NMV is what got those earlier scorps tones but what about Schenker? He had the echoplex in line too right? I always wondered if that gave him that small lift on the UFO stuff. It's hella crunchy where early MSG is more cocked wah and filtering sounding.

So there are two stories here - the one from Rudy where Randy was going to do Speak and then a third studio album. And then the one from Andrew Klein where Speak would have fulfilled Randy's obligation and that would have been considered the third album. For those that don't know, Klein was very close with Delores.

Klein has a massive amount of documentation because he was the other half of putting the biography together - tensions were so bad between Ozzy/Sharon and Randy that he just wanted out which most everyone knows. He was massively against recording an all Sabbath album but Sharon and Ozzy convinced him to do it on the basis that it would fulfill his obligation to them. Tensions had been bad pretty much once Sharon made Blizzard a solo project. Once Ozzy slugged Randy, then they both insisted on doing the Speak album as a money grab to fill their pockets, dude was done.

Recording Speak was all about putting royalties in Ozzy's pocket, Sabbath as well they released a live album afterwards. The original publishing deal with management had expired and it was a way both parties could make money quickly.

I've come to despise Ozzy and Sharon. It's all about greed to them. But his name was the reason we have incredible music from Randy, Jake and even Zakk. Horrible people though and the main reason that as long as they are alive there will never be a proper documentary on Randy.
