I said it decades ago. I can get my sound out of any decent gear. Needs to be in the ballpark of the type of sound I am going after.

I tune in the same sounds regardless of the gear I am using.

I still like checking out new gear. But I am going to tune in the same sounds I always use.

So true. It matters very little, even less live and in a mix.

I think there's 2 paths
One, there is a joy to getting something new and trying it out, also some disappointments. It can make you feel more creative and bring excitment.

Two, yes you can get good sounds with whatever you got. We don't "need" extra gear, it's a luxury.

I also tend to dial everything to what I like so it sounds similar, but still love different gear.

As a guitar player, I can get my sound on most decent gear that's all within the same ballpark. I can get close enough to my sound on a boosted JCM800 or an Uberschall or VH4 or a Mark series or really any high-gain amp.

As an amp builder/modder, I know there are tons of differences if I decide to focus on them.

it depends really, i think most of us here have multiple guitars/amps/boosts that allow us to tweak things to be pretty close, if we all had just one guitar and amp though it would matter much more.

My band recorded everything 25 years ago. When I listen to it I have no idea what gear I was using. It would be a guess at best. It all just sounds like me.
In my case, it was a Peavey Bandit and my Charvel model 4. I had those two for a long time. But what worries me the most is what happened to my playing! :ROFLMAO:  I wish I would have kept practicing infrom those days aswhile listening to those old tapes I impressed by some of the riffs and licks.

Fucking right it matters!

“Must have pro gear”

How else are you supposed to get that sweet cover band gig making $60 bucks a show???

No YouTuber worth their salt is gonna get 112 subs without $30k worth of amps behind them in every video!

Now with that out of the way, I’ve seen bands where one guitar later has a full Boogie rig and a Jackson custom shop, but the other guitar player opposite him has a Marshall Valvestate half stack and Epiphone and his tone mopped the floor with the other dudes.

If you know how to dial it in and can play, it really doesn’t matter to a degree. Lots of guys with amazing gear can make it sound like shit. As stated above, give me any amp and guitar and I’ll dial it to sound like me.

My first gigging amp was a Bassman + pedals, followed shortly by a new Marshall SS 1x12 combo. This was 1985. After a few yrs in the military I then grabbed an ADA MP1, Digitech GSP 21 and a Mosvalve power amp, H/K 412. That was my rig for 20 years. They were tools...just plug in and play. 2008 I decided to buy a Lee Jackson 2204...wow, now I'm hooked on modded Marshalls.
Yep, I sound the same whether I use the mini rack, Bassman or the last 17 yrs of chasing modded Marshalls....
