Hello.
Recently I discovered new types of JIII - Max Grip and Carbon Fibre.

Can someone tell me where is the difference between them ? All I know that Mick Thomson designed Carbon Fibre and that is all.

The CF feels harder and seems glide over the strings better than the normal black or red ones... max grip is just the rippled little grip surface.

The Carbon Fiber is an awesome pick.

Feakin love the max grip, i tried the Carbon Fiber, didn't really give them a chance. As Jofipe stated they seem a tad stiffer and a little slicker with less drag.

Hope this doesn't side track too much but how do you guys find the carbon Jazz IIIs compare to the different gauge Ultex Jazz IIIs? the UJs come in 1.38, 2.0 and possibly 3.0 gauges, I believe the 2.0 are the black Ultex while the 1.38 are the original yellow Ultex.

Those are the only picks I use. But the new Petrucci J3s look great.

Happy ROCKTOBER everyone! Dunlop's got some fun stuff coming up to celebrate one of our favorite months, so stay tuned!

To start, take a look at this: The long awaited John Petrucci Signature Jazz III pick has officially arrived! We're shipping these this month, so be on the lookout for them at your favorite music store!

I thought the JP picks were going to be Carbon Fiber too. Oh well, I will still definitely be checking them out. The tapered tip would be a huge improvement for me, I think. It may wear down much faster though, if they were carbon fiber they would likely last longer than Ultex... but, we'll see.

I use the pitch black jazz III .73 mm. I've tried them all and the pitch black works the best for me. It's the combination of the tortex texture over the nylon and the the thinner .73 mm over the regular jazz III.

I have been using the Tortex Jazz III's but that Petrucci pick looks promising.

Been using Ultex Jazz III's with great results for a while now. Anyone have any links to the Carbon fiber picks?

Jazz IIIs... I can not do without them!

I didn't know there were so many variations! I have always just had red or black...

Tortex ones sound cool!

Used them for awhile. Switched to the Tortex III, which is a normal sized Tortex with the jazz 3 tip.

I really like the XL Jazz lll's. I've been using them exclusively for a while now.

Heading to the city this weekend and planning on buying some new picks. I'm an Ultex Sharp kinda guy as of late, but I've only heard amazing things from everyone using the J3's. What's so great about 'em? I suppose the answer is - shut up and try 'em Mo

But seriously, I'm old school... Maybe it's time to check out some "other" plectrums :dunno:

Valid question

For me, the Jazz III just makes me play more accurately...I feel like I have way more control over the guitar when I use them (they're all I use now, I literally CAN'T go back to regular picks). Whenever I try a regular sized pick I feel like I'm playing with a brick...and that's not good

IMO, the regular J3's are way to slippery and I can't hold them as easily.
I usually use the duller material (I think its called Tortex or something)

I noticed on the Dunlop site that the different gauges have different tips. What's the norm out there? 1.18mm? Sharp tip?? Just wondering...

I don't use the sharp tips - I think they are a bit too sharp...here's the ones I use: http://www.jimdunlop.com/product/Tortex ... k-Jazz-III

(I use the 1.14mm size, but I'm thinking about dropping to the 1.0mm...haven't decided yet)

Interesting...

Well, I went through my "pick bowl" last night - I've got a variety in there for sure... Ultex, Ultex Sharp, Tortex, JD Nylon, actual tortoise shell pics from BKP, some bass "triangle" picks, etc. The ones that always feel best in my fingers are the Ultex Sharp 1.0, but after hearing how many people rave about the J3s, well - time to try if for nothing more than just that.

I'll see what they have in the LMS downtown this weekend... Might be coming home with some new tools for the trade ;)
