Interesting...

Well, I went through my "pick bowl" last night - I've got a variety in there for sure... Ultex, Ultex Sharp, Tortex, JD Nylon, actual tortoise shell pics from BKP, some bass "triangle" picks, etc. The ones that always feel best in my fingers are the Ultex Sharp 1.0, but after hearing how many people rave about the J3s, well - time to try if for nothing more than just that.

I'll see what they have in the LMS downtown this weekend... Might be coming home with some new tools for the trade ;)

Try 'em out!
Nothing to lose

I need to try of the Petruccis.

I love the idea of the raised lettering and rough feel, like the Eric Johnsons, and the sharp slippery tip!

I have a few Jazz III Max Grips with the raised grip pattern, the black and red ones (not sure of the gauge). I've been playing with the Dava Jazz Grips for so long now that the J3 Max Grips feel a tad too small and I can't seem to grip them comfortably, like the grip pattern is too raised. Has anyone noticed this compared to the non-grip Jazz III?

I'm flipping between the Ultex Sharp 0.73 and 0.9 right now, can't seem to settle on either. I'd like to try the 1.38 mm Ultex Jazz III next if anyone locally could stock them before the Petrucci J3 hits stores.

And again, please let me know what it is that makes these (J3) magic. Are they the same size as other plectrums? Are they carved at the edge differently? What the hell is it that makes them so popular?

I'm educating myself in "picks". This is either a very sad day for yours truly, or a very blazeh day.

Either way, what is it that made you go WOW after getting hooked on the J3s? I see on the Dunlop site speak of "cult like following" so there's gotta be something to these that's "different" than, say, your standard tortex or ultex or the like.

What is it?

I have tried every version of the jazz III and I find the ultux jazz III are the best feeling and have the best tone of the all the jazz III's.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Wouldn't be surprised if these are the ones I gravitate towards seeing as I'm already an Ultex fanboi

Cool info.
Mojo

I'm oversimplifying but to me it's like this:
Small pick size + pointed tip = articulate and fast (in comparison to some other picks)

And great pic of the different Jazz III. It really does look to me like the Max Grip has a more beveled edge all around, that might explain why they feel smaller to me.

I just got some Dava Jazz nylons and gels in the mail so I'm going to try those for a while until I find any other Jazz type picks I don't already have. Damn I love their grip.

Just an update. Picked up a few packs of J3s.

I think I'm digging the original red nylon version the best. Didn't take too long to get into them. Definitely a slight change in right hand muscularity, but otherwise, fast, smooth, and nice.

Go figure :dunno:

Not my cup of tea.
You know what ? I played on this Carbon Fibre J3 and ... Holy crap , they are amazing. I used one pick for more than a week , and the pick looks like brand new ( I'm playing with a lot of aggression + lot of riffs). Very slippery , accurate and stay in the same position in my fingers very well. And me + this pick equipped = instant pinch harmonics.

About this red JIII - You tested them , they are really take much more damage over time ?

Well, I picked up the regular, XL, Ultex models. I like the nylon (red) smaller sized originals the best so far. I'm not too worried about play-wear as I just flick it out and grab a new one. They feel good - so far. Haven't tried a "carbon fibre" pick - this seems a touch over the top, but then again, this is RT and we're a bunch of obsessive weirdos here

Was using Jazz III XL's for a couple years now and happen to grab an old fender medium heavy and loved how it felt. Im a very heavy handed picker and found that too heavy a gauge pick limits my speed a bit...Went between regular Jazz III, Jazz III XL, and the fender med heavy over and over doing various drills and the fender hands down felt right to me. Have some .73 and 1.14 ultex sharps in route.. Gonna give them a try before settling on a final pick.. Thinkin something in the .71 to 1.0 is gonna be perfect for my playing style give me the most speed and feel.

I have been using the Tortex Jazz III's but that Petrucci pick looks promising.

I have some of them.... I got some for sell!

Also check out the jazztone 208 and the newer primetones which are jazz iii xl shaped but much much stiffer. The primetones are big stubby thickness but feel much thinner.

Ok, if you insist on talking about Davas...

I got some time on the Dava Nylons (yellow) and Gels (clear purple) lately. Even though the Dava Jazz grips are all the same size and gauge, each material has a different flex with the nylon being the softest and the gels being the stiffest, the delrin is just a bit softer than the gels, hardly noticeable to me. The nylons don't seem to wear down as fast as the delrins or gels, i'm guessing because of their added flex don't grip the strings as much as the others. For feel I like the stiffer gels, they seem to wear as fast as the delrins though.

i'll have to give these a shot again. the original Jiii's never worked for me. single note stuff is fine, but i can't figure out how to strum on these things for the life of me!

I went out looking for some carbon fiber jazz III's last weekend and found these instead. Very easy transition from the regular red jazz III's to the Dava. I think they do grip a little better.
