What is the difference between these? Are they the same? I've got a 1x12 Mesa cab with a SRO 12L in there that I'm about to put up for sale because I need to pay for some other things and it's useless with the Meathead so I figured I'd pass it on. It's a great sounding speaker I just don't know much about it and I'd like to represent it properly when I put it up for sale. Any info would be

those are far too valuable to sell.

you better sell me the Meathead instead!

Guys on TGP go nuts over the EV SROs. Definitely sell it there.

That speaker is not one of the original SRO's. A real one has no 'L' designation and the magnet is covered by a white cover that looks like a coffee can. Some of the SRO's that you have were made for PA systems and some for guitar. They do not sound like a true SRO and are not worth nearly as much.

A true Alnico SRO looks like this:

Cool, I don't know much about it other than what it's labeled. My guess is if it's not a a "true" SRO it would be a newer model or something? :dunno:

It looks like it's a transitional model...its definitely got more in common with an EVM12L than an SRO.
I'd guess that its an EVM, but before they decided to call them as such.

That's kind of what I was thinking too because of the "12L". I've played EVMs before and this one sounds the same to me, it's been a while so not that I could remember that great anyway

Correct. Alnico SRO's went out of production in 1968. The 12L's and M's are newer and not necessarily what you want, however, an original, if I remember correctly, has a very high power rating (200 watts comes to mind) and it's extremely clean. Whatever your amp sounds like, this will reproduce it but you won't be getting any speaker distortion as you would with a lower powered speaker. I had a 12" and a 15" SRO (different cabinets) that I used exclusively with my Fuchs ODS-50. That was the amp they sounded best with. I'm currently using a pair of Golds with a Mod 50. I still have the 15" around somewhere but they are too hard to find to give it up even though I'm not using it.

Alright cool, thanks  Either way I'm guessing it should be worth around $300-350 for the speaker and cab. I think I'm gonna give it a shot locally so I don't get raped on shippping

I use the 12Ls and the original SROs in thiele cabs. Amazing when run together.

Yeah, even this one by itself sounds great, I was using it with a 100 watt head with no problems. I'd keep it if I didn't need the cash

Why is it no good with the Meathead ? Too bad the cab is not a thiele ... I would want it.

It's not that it's not good with it, but because of the wattage output of the MH even a 2x12 could possibly be damaged. This and my Port City 2x12 are up for sale to prevent me from blowing them up :aww:

I have 2 Hermida 2x12 cabs, 1 Hermida 1x12, 2 Mills 4x12 cabs, 2 Mesa Thiele cabs, ALL with EV12ML speakers. I have several others, but pretty much only use them now. Best speakers ever made. I have had the early SRO, liked them, but more of a vintage tone that I don't go for.

I thought the output max with the Meathead was 200 watts with big tubes. What is the wattage on that speaker ?

I'm not sure, I think it's 200 watts but I'm not sure if that's RMS or not :dunno: . I think the MH puts out 180 or 200 RMS  I guess it might be able to handle it I just don't want to take the chance of blowing up a good speaker. I know the suggested load is at least (1) 4x12 cab though
