I missed the boat on early thrash metal tones back in the day, too wrapped up in VH, Dokken Ratt and the rest of the LA scene to pay much attention. Had a few buds that were big into Metallica, Metal Church, Exodus, Accept and other heavier bands. What specific albums (and the related gear) do you guys think are the stand outs of the era ? IE : Exodus and the Todd Langner modded Marshalls Really want to hear what everyone thinks. Thanks in advance.

I'm biased, Todd Langner was a great friend. He had dialed Gary Holts jcm 800 so well that to this day he still uses it for certain things...for the time he was wayyy ahead.

The only old school is the best, Exodus and Metallica had real tones before everyone else had a chance. Slayer never had great tone till later in the game.

Vio-lence- Oppressing the Masses
Forbidden - Twisted into form
Heathen - Victims of deception
Laaz Rockit - Annihilation principle

Don’t know much about the gear, other than I think the Heathen album was recorded with a Mesa Boogie Mark III Blue stripe.

SOD-SEOD
Dark Angel- Darkness Descends
Obituary- SWR/COD
Malevolent Creation- Retribution
Believer-Sanity Obscure

Mine was "Into the Mirror Black" by Sanctuary. Great tones...great songs. Metal Church's "Human Factor" too is awesome tones. Powermad's
"Absolute Power" great album. And last I will say Whiplash's "Insult to Injury" just flat out slays.

Some good ones here, but for sure:

Overkill-from the underground and below

Holy bass and guitar tones. Incredible mix, incredible production. This one goes unnoticed I feel like, and I’m not sure why. Incredible all around to me.

Kreator - Coma of souls.
Testament - The gathering.
Metallica - Ride/Master/Justice.
Sepultura - Beneath the remains/ Arise.
Iced Earth - Stormrider/ Burnt offerings.
Grip Inc. - Inner strength/Nemesis/Solidify

..to name a few

My thrash tone taste varies wildly - I like the vacuum cleaner CF tones

As well as more refined iced earth Larry tones

And Mille peaked here

Overkill in general had great tones

Langner had his hand in the first of the three you mentioned 100% that is a fact.
Not to derail since it’s not really old school, but do you have any idea what rig Heathen used on “The Evolution of Chaos” album? I always thought that was a great tone as well.
