Slayer - Reign In Blood
DRI - Thrash Zone

Not to derail since it’s not really old school, but do you have any idea what rig Heathen used on “The Evolution of Chaos” album? I always thought that was a great tone as well.
Derail, to talk about gear on RT...lol. You did right to ask. I know Lee, I could ask him but I know he was using MKIII amps for a while.

Lol good point. Yeah I’d be curious to hear any rig details. It’s a great tone.

Thanks so much to all who responded ! Keep ‘em coming ! I should have mentioned Anthrax and S.O.D. !!! Loved that stuff ! Spent a summer blasting that in the car with a few buds sitting in traffic headbanging like maniacs.

Anybody familiar with Meliah Rage, Steel Assassin, or Wargasm ?

The bass is the key in overkill though, that clank influenced so many bands
Ya definitely but I truly love their master of puppets but thicker tone on YOD . When I was kid I hated the vocals but always listened because of the guitar tones . Just full

I love vocals like that lol

I sang a verse with Bobby on stage at Club Binai's (their hometown club back then in Old Bridge NJ ) then dove off. Had to be back in 1987-88. 16 yrs old. Overkill were nice dudes! actually¦

Mine was "Into the Mirror Black" by Sanctuary. Great tones...great songs. Metal Church's "Human Factor" too is awesome tones. Powermad's
"Absolute Power" great album. And last I will say Whiplash's "Insult to Injury" just flat out slays.
Sanctuary was great. Saw them with Fates Warning at the Omni in Oakland early 90’s. Great show. Into the Mirror Black is a great record.
They used MP1’s live at that point.

What time frame in years is now a days is considered old school thrash? Yes, I'm old LOL

I liked Them and Conspiracy from King Diamond ... for "metal tone" it just sounded a step above that artificial tone that was around back then.... Also megadeth symphony of destruction is a good tone imo

Hell ya very cool . My band opened up for them in Ohio and Michigan . Was a fun time

I’ve always loved the tone of venom. One of the pioneers of thrash.

The most underrated thrash tone is Overkill Years of Decay . They used boogies at the time .
ADA mp1 into Carvin SS power amp into Marshall cabs w/65w Celestions. Some type of EQ after the ADA highly likely as well.
Previous album was 70’s Marshalls (same cabs) modded by someone in the New Jersey/New York area. Not sure exactly who but not one of the more famous mod guys.
I saw both those tours!
