Sorry, you misread me. I should've been more clear. Looking at acreage that runs 1000-2000 bucks per acre this way I can look at 60-80-100-200 acre lots that are within my price range and still have enough left over to build if it doesn't have a decent place on it. I'd be ok living in an elevated wall tent with an outhouse on a nice porch but that isn't good enough for the old lady. She'd be cool with a 500 square foot cabin but I still need a large garage or other outbuilding for a shop and storage space.
I didn't do this, but many out here in central Texas do.. Build what's known as a "barndominium".

A shop/barn with a small living quarters inside - just to get started.

I was gonna do that here but I am able bodied and stick built was cheaper and pay as I go rather than debt with the barn. They also tried to sell me double wides so when you default they own your property. Naw, pay as I go and if I have to live in a meth lab like single wide for a few years that's what I'll do. Did, actually.

So gallon jugs and the woods ehh.
It's not that bad. The number one luxury you need for good country living is easy access to clean, drinkable water and a good way to heat it, even if it's just a big stock pot and wood fire with some grill tops to hold the pot. There is also the multi purpose dutch oven and a good tripod. I have that too. Since I didn't have an oven or a stove I bought a bayou classic 18lbs cast iron turkey cooker and did turkey on the fire for thanksgiving too. It's all possible with some careful fire and heat management.

Did not go the "barndominium" route, or the trailer router either - although that what was every moron advised me to do.

The issue with the barn-dominium is the local taxing authority can/will come after you for tax avoidance.

I wouldn’t think that would be an issue. But many if not most jurisdictions have housing codes and might claim it’s not habitable.

Only problem is I get the "real property" tax since it's a permanent living structure on land instead of a mobile home. I had a slab poured.

Here a guy showed up in a Honda civic one day as I came home from work with my wife telling me the tax man was here, be nice to him, lol. He had a tape measure on his belt and said he had to measure my self contracted structure for tax purposes. I told him the dimensions and he put his tape measure back on his belt, said thanks, and left, lol.

The folks around me are paying 3 times the property taxes I am.

Same (or comparable) acreage.
