Not for Gibson is this a throw back, hell they had to outsourse shredder guitars. This is new territory for them, a modern guitar made for the player and that neck heal should have been standard for years.

Gibson made some guitars with Kahler's on them in the '80s.

I had a Gibson M-III for awhile and it was in the early 90's. If I recall it had some wierd ass body wood and while it was a decent guitar it was kindof that "jack of all trades master of none" thing. Mine had a floyd on it.

Maybe I had a dud, but that was also a bad time for Gibson too. It could have been cool, but their QC was shit back then

Somebody call Neal Schon from Journey, he was playing this guitar in the 80's.

Brad

Brad Gillis was playing his before that... his LP had floyd rose #3, back when Floyd was making them in his garage. :)
I saw Brad play that guitar when he was with Ozzy...Speak of the devil...

I saw one of those in a local Guitar Center on Saturday! It shocked me. I saw it hanging there and asked the dude what the deal was with that LP with a Floyd. He handed it to me and said they just got it. Kinda cool. It was really light and seemed kinda neat. It's a Custom Shop model and it was like $3,999 or something crazy like that! Ridiculous price tag.

Sorry, but custom shop or not, they still aren't worth half that price.
The same can be said about any Gibson, none of them are worth what they sell for IMO...

From what I understand, These things were put on hold for awhile becaue Neal Schon was a little pissed off(maybe thats the wrong word) about them releasing guitars that were essentialy just stripped down models of his Sig Guitar. They had to rework a bunch of things due to the neck joint carve. The neck has to have a longer tenon due to the carve and that meant new machinery( or something like that)

Im obviously biased because I think this model of LP was LONG OVERDUE and not just the Floyd, the carved neck joint alone is something that Gibson should have done years ago. I say good on them but like all things Gibson, The price that the nametag commands aint worth what you get

I dunno man... $2,600 or so for the best sounding guitar in the world (my R8)??? That sounds overpriced at first, then I plug it in and whoa...

VOS Gibsons are amazing. I'd like a R9 w/o pickguard but I ain't paying 5500€ for one. :gethim:

I believe they invloved Tom Anderson back then and several were designed by him, I know their 80s shredder stuff was not 100% in-house.

I predict that this model will flop and be discontinued before too long. Why? Well part of it's the pricetag, but you guys have to realize that probably 95% of Les Paul players don't want a Floyd-Rose. I understand a few people do, but not many.

I agree about the floyd maybe not selling in huge quanities but that neck heal and carve will stay, how can people not like a better playing guitar is how I view that.

Yeah man, they really are amazing in my opinion. This R8 is the ONLY guitar I've ever owned where I've said it will be with me forever. I NEVER say that, because it's never true. But it's true with this guitar. I could sell every other guitar and be happy with just this one. It's that good.

I like the flametop R9s, but man, that's a hell of an upcharge just for some flame. I went with the plaintop R8 because of price, but now I'm digging the plaintop. Definitely more "working man" type of thing.

Indeed, Chris. It's ridiculous how much the price goes up for R9s. R8s MSRP is 3845€ compared to R9s MSRP which is 6445€ in Finland. So it's almost 3000€ more for a flametop one. Are they using 10 trees for that or what???

I think the people buying and playing Les Pauls, SGs, Strats, Teles, etc... are "traditionalists" when it comes to gear. I think that alone will cause it to fail. But hey, I could be waaaaaaaaay wrong.

I could see the old school saying the tone was effected due to the missing wood, I dont think I have the ears to hear this though as I am mainly struggling to do what is in my head at the time

I can just see a traditionalist that can hear a short neck tenon saying that the improvements take away from the tone

All it takes is for a Zakk Wylde or a Slash to start playing one of these and they'll sell.

Maybe PRS can sue Gibson now for daring to make a better playing LP.

It would be great if Gibson started offering Floyds on every model they carried.

I want a Korina Explorer with a Floyd....

What's hilarious about this discussion is that how the Axcess is "so 80's"? Like the Jacksons and Charvels body designs aren't? Please. Those guitars just scream "hey, I LOVE the 80's hair metal"!  The LP IMO branches across all genres and is timeless. I think the Floyd is killer. I wish my LP custom silverburst had one.

The real funny thing is LP's really weren't too popular in the 80's. I remember in the late 80's you couldn't give a LP away.

I dont remember how many Deluxes we bought for $400 and cut them up for humbuckers and everytime we would play a Boston song because nothing else was known during the 80s for LPs

It is funny the company they tried to sue they are now copying, Paul must be laughing a bit right now :D

Yup, your right. I had a LP Standard I partially traded for a Kramer Baretta back in 85'. What a dumbass for that I was. But hey, I wanted to play what Eddie was playin.

They'll never admit to copying PRS but it's funny to see them come up with the new neck heal and a trem LP when PRS has had their model out for a few years. But i really haven't liked any of the PRS SC Trems i have played. They may as well use a FLoyd instead of a vintage trem and those models have a thinner body which doesn't make sense to me.
