When I was a kid we didn't have to worry about global warming or ozone because we all knew that the Russians were going to bomb us to death long before the environment killed us.

Yeah, it's really too bad when some people like the Bush admin don't let stem cell research get federal funding just cause of politics. It works both ways.
cloudnine":370jhdog said:Either way, opponents of global warming seem to cite one (usually badly written or studied) article or another as proof that it doesn't exist. Meanwhile, a huge percentage of the scientific community (Read: smart people) have serious reason to believe it does.

Global Warming is (1) a theory and (2) is true, not proven to be caused or affected by human behavior. Assuming that the world is as old as the scientific community theorizes it to be, and assuming that the scientific community is capable of determining what happened in the past, the scientific community still cannot determine if global warming is a naturally occurring situation.
To believe the "scientific community" takes more faith than believing in God.

# 2001-2006 - U.S. President George W. Bush signs an executive order which restricts federally-funded stem cell research on embryonic stem cells to the already derived cell lines. He supports federal funding for embryonic stem cell research on the already existing lines of approximately $100 million and $250 million for research on adult and animal stem cells.
# 19 July, 2006 - President George W. Bush vetoes H.R. 810 (Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act), a bill that would have reversed the Clinton-era law which made it illegal for federal money to be used for research where stem cells are derived from the destruction of an embryo.
(Granted that one was as said a Clinton-era law)

No shit the scientific community puts the best theory forward and goes from there. Your "flat earth" comparison is ridiculous; the flat earth theory was NOT based on any scientific research, study, anything. It was just a commonly accepted notion at the time.
Meanwhile, climate change is a theory based on evidence. Whether you want to accept this as fact or not is up to you, but the evidence is there.
Of course it's a theory. That's what science IS; a bunch of theories that are refined, and refined further, and refined further to define our world in the best way we can.
No, believing in researched, studied, and tested science is much easier than, which by definition is totally unscientific since you can never prove or disprove the idea of a higher being.

See, this is what I don't get, either. I don't see any scientist who calls anyone who doesn't believe in climate change an idiot - they're merely saying that the evidence supports it, people should be mindful of this, and that more research needs to be done.
Yet people who choose to believe the theory are derided as "hippies", "sheep", and a whole host of other names, as if this makes them bad people. Wow, sorry for taking the words of very intelligent people seriously - not necessarily as gospel truth.
In the U.S., science has come to be seen as a boogeyman and it's fucking scary.
Climate change theory SHOULD be questioned and put up to rigorous testing. Noone is debating that.

Yes it does settle it, NASA supports the idea of man made global warming. Contrary to what the OP impliedOdin":3pc03kic said:You found it on the Internet? Well that pretty much settles it then, it must be true.

Did you actually just ask if the earth is more than 400k years old?

No, I asked if it can be proven, of if one must have faith in the scientific community to believe it.
