High Gain Amp Shootout, Saturday June 20th, Hollywood, CA.

That would be awesome....I'm actually dying to hear the amp with your Orange cab with the V30 and H75 speakers. That's a combination I've always wanted to hear. Any weekend in July would be cool, just let me know and the sonic assault will begin.

Glad you dig the pickups too!

Things are comin together, I bought another long speaker cable so that's done, I also got another 421, spoke with John at Mesa Hollywood he's sending a Mark V and a Stilletto, and also arranged delivery of all of Friedman's amps (7). Looks like everything is in place.

James,
I might have to take your word and buy a pair of ScumBack H75's for my Port city 2x12, Will have a Port City 4x12 V30 loaded running with the 2x12 with Scumback h75's should sound massive!

That should be pretty insane. The V30/H75 combo is PB & J.

Are yours standard h75 or the h75-lhdc? Im trying to debate between the 2, Says for the high gain thing lhdc's would be the better way to go due to the bigger magnet.

Mine are just the standard ones.

If you had a standard cab, the H75-LHDC would be, IMO, a better choice for higher gain, but since you have the Port City (ported) cab, which has more bass response, the H75 would be plenty. You don't want it too woofy/dark sounding, and I think the PC cab with the H75-LHDC's would be just that.

I need you guy's help. Here are 3 quick clips of different speaker/cab combos. All are the same mics, pres, amp, settings and guitar.

What are your thoughts? How does the sound differ? Which do you prefer for what kind of music and why?

This is going to help me make the best choices for Saturday.

Cab 1 - Chuncky with a huge low end, the thickest of the bunch.
This would be my choice for a huge rythm sound.

Cab 2 - Clearest a perfect mix of 1&3 classic rock vibe, This one will sit in a mix the best to my ears.
Also has a little less presence then 1. (of course you can tell this is my overall favorite.)

Cab 3 - thinner and more hi-fi sounding, darker and slighlty congested, This might make for a good lead tone.

Thanks, my feeling too. Cab 1 & 2 is the Scumback/Marshall straight with M75's, the difference is:

Cab 1 has a 57>Neve 1272 & 421>API
Cab 2 has a 57>Montessi Red & 421>API

Cab 3 is the Orange cab with
H75 - 57>Neve 1272
V30 - 421>API

I recorded with a 1960's orange 4x12 on my bands last album was a very dark sounding cab, my producer loved it though thats still one piece of gear i regret selling.
Regardless, #2 gets my vote

Cab 1 Sounds chunky but I think it would be buried in a band scenario. Sounds quite compressed compared to the others, lacking the amount of mids to stand out. It would work for modern stuff.

Cab 2 Just sounds great. Open, articulate, right amount of mids to be noticed in a band situation. Could fit well in any type of pop/rock stuff.

Cab 3 To fizzy for my taste. I really have no idea where to use it. Maybe it works with heavily detuned stuff.

Something else, any chance of a Splawn to appear on the list of amps?

What wattage are the M75s in those cabs ? Do any have the large dustcaps ?

Definitely preferred 1 & 2 over clip 3.

65 watt, standard dustcaps.

cab 1 setup - sounds great, but I like cab 2 better. this one sounds a bit grainier

cab 2 setup - my fave, sounds smoother than cab 1

cab 3 setup - got a scooped type thing happening, which makes it my least fave

I still like cab 2 better than the 4th clip, only because cab 2 setup is less granier and I prefer smoother tones. But if you like a bit of hair on the tone, it's great!
