I figured, "The V30 is just the cool speaker to hate."

everything is subjective...personally i hate V30s on their own most of the time, however some amps sound great with them. i have a V30 and a 75 in my 2x12 cab, and i can hear that the V30 definitely has a very prominent midrange spike that doesnt sound very pleasant to my ears with my 5150. because of that i cut the mids on the amp to 4, while i normally have them at 7 with my 4x12 with G12m70's (which have a very similar sound to 75's).

i can listen to the v30, then the 75 in the 2x12 and i instantly hear a much less intrusive midrange on the 75, as well as a less congested bass tone IMO. the high end can get harsh, but thats what the treble and presence controls are for. some amps just take better to 30's, others to other speakers. depends a lot on your cab and its construction, the speaker's frequency curve, and the amps tone. mixed the 2 speakers sound great, but on their own id take a 75 anyday.

I needed a 16ohm cab so I could use 4 4x12's at once.

And, seriously, I wanted to have all WGS speakers. Celestion is pretty disappointing in my experience.

Bonus for you, you save money

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE EM on records. Soooo easy to get a great sound through mic on record.

But I DESPISE them in the room / in person  :scared:

Not a fan of them either.

No likey

V30's work GREAT with Mark series Boogies. I had my Mark III hooked up to my Recto 2x12 loaded with V30's, just ask Ralph what he thought. I think they work well with the Mark Boogies because with the EQ you can dial in whatever tone you need. When i first recorded with V30's it sounded like ass. 2 seconds of moving the EQ sliders and all was fine.

I look at V30's as an industry standard piece of gear, much like an SM57 microphone. If V30's sucked i doubt that just about every single amp company would load their cabs with them.

i useta hate em but my band is recording and my other guitarist has a v30 loaded avatar cab...i decided to try it vs. my basson (with eminence legend v12) cuz the basson is rear-loaded and i LOVED the sound we got offa them. not sure about live but damn they sounded great on the recording.

Don't underestimate flock mentality, n00b mentality, and producing what the market demands.

I mean, the Pod is a market standard, but I still hate it.

I'm sitting on 6 Whorehouse Classic Leads for future projects that I picked up last Summer during their introductory price period

It's not so much what the market demands, it's what each company decided to use because it sounded good to the most broad tastes, IMHO. Do Bogner, Diezel, Boogie, Framus, and Engl cabs sound good with V30's? Most of the one's i played all did.

the only way i dig the V30 is with orange rockers and their matching cabs, otherwise i i can't stand them. the CL80 my overall fave. nice, big cleans, smooth, yet tight and defined OD sounds.

I used to love them. Right now I'm going through a "what was I thinking" phase.

Years ago I would have said I did not like V-30's. For me it all boils down to the cab they are used in and the amp thats matched up with them. Still wouldn't be the first speaker that comes to mind but I wouldn't be so fast to rule it out anymore.

I guess I was cool before it was cool, because I've never liked them. They're not bad, but I definitely prefer other speakers. (Like the G12T-75 and EVM12L ;) )
+1, on the EVs anywho. Personally this is my fav Celestion:

Sold one a few years back and I've been kicking myself ever since

V30's are basically impossible to beat for modern metal rhythm tones, especially low tuned modern metal. There's a reason the two best modern metal producers (Andy Sneap and Fredrik Nordstrom) pretty much only use V30's for every band they record.

I mean, I A/B/C'ed them with Greenbacks and heritage 65's in 3 Egnater 4x12cabs that were identical on paper.

I tried 6 Eggy Modules in a Mod 50 through each of these cabs.

Bman
COD
EG5
Erect
SL2
VX

The V30 had something that wouldn't go away. I never warmed up to it.

I also played more than one seminar head through it over the course of about 3 hours.

Then, on top of that, I bring this oversize mesa cab home, and the V30's sounded wretched with my gear.

Swap in some WGS CL80's and WGS V30's, instant tonal bliss. Huge tone, warm, the sound in my head, etc.

end of story for me. I gave the V30's a fair chance.

So who wants to buy 4 mint V30's? 8 ohms.

LOL, too funny

Just off hand, what speakers does Rick St.Pierre use in his Wizard cabs?

Definitely the best amp/cabs I've heard in person!!!
