how much time does one spend searching EVH's tone compared to chasing their own tone?

just wondering.

The quickest way to success in anything is to emulate those that are successful.

When you first start out playing you find out what gear your idols use and then after that you learn to hone in on your own tone.

i know of a lot of guys who have their own sound but would love Eddies tone because it's an assload of fun to play on..and it's a great tone in my humble opinion.

well sure, its a great tone.i'm not even a big VH fan,and he's not a major influence.but yeh,his tone is awesome.but the arguments are based on opinions.IMO you can never get the eact tone.sure you can get close, even cop the vibe, but why argue about what EVH was playing when, where and how,and basing it on a picture.the Vox in the picture could have been left on stage by the opening band,to make the stage look fuller. No one knows.

but see, in this case, we do know. Because that's Rudy Lerien sitting there in the pic, and guys like me and Friedman know Rudy. Rudy almost teched for me 2 years ago when I was out with Don Henley. Rudy was with VH from the beginning, through every single VH show there was til 84. So ya know he knows. So that's why I don't see the debate...... it's like, hey Rudy, what was that Vox? "A last ditch backup."! ok, end of story.

http://www.vhoholic.com go to the 5150 combo section thats where the majority of the van halen songs are especially songs from van halen 1(first album). As we know the 5150 combo is a high gain amp(60 watt),nothing like a stock 68 plexi, anyway enjoy gentleman.......

Pete, you just don't get it, man... Rudy's comments are all part of a huge VH camp conspiracy to keep us all from the true facts that a slaved Vox is the secret to the VHI tone. Can't you see that!!!

I'm aware of those clips. What is your point? No one said you can't dial back the gain on a higher gain amp and simulate the tone as well...

I still say that most of what convinces a listener that someone has the VHI tone is the playing and production of the clip...

+1000.

I have no point,I just think they are the closest clips ive heard of the van halen 1 sound.I think its easier to achieve that sound using the right high gain amp vs. a stock plexi, ive owned my share of late 60s plexi and some early 70s superleads.

ok,when i said "no one knows" i actually meant "i don't know" lol.

thx Pete for straightening me out.hopefully the OP can figure it out now.

A highly respected builder once said to me; "Eddie doesn't even sound like Eddie anymore...". I don't know if he meant that as a good thing, or a bad thing? It seems like everything that can be played - has been played already! Where is the next EVH? Where's the next Michael Schenker? There's a lot of great players out there, but none that really stand-out. It's the same "Pixies" formula over and over again...

Most of us just play for fun/hobby, and are not paid professionals. My post was meant for people to just have fun with really. I'm always ready to experiment with different rig configurations, new pedals, alternate tube combinations...etc.

I sat next to Richie Blackmore at a Yngwie Malmsteen show in Fern Park, FL back in the late 80's. He was really cool! Ian Paice, Pat Travers, "Mars" Cowling, and Paul Chapman were there too. Michael Schenker was suppose to be there, but I guess decided not to go. MS drummer was there, and said that Michael wouldn't play or go into any place that sold alcohol. Anyway, I asked RB if he had ever met EVH, or maybe ever got to see his rig? Not surprisingly he totally ignored that question.  He did comment on Yngwie's playing by saying; "That's a lot of notes mate!" Ian Paice was cool too. I asked him what it was like working with Gary Moore? He replied; "Let's just say - what Gary Moore wants - Gary Moore gets!"

It was exciting for me, since I grew up on groups like Deep Purple, QSMS, Black Oak Arkansas, Pink Floyd, Peter Frampton, Heart, Kansas, Sweet (one of the best bands ever!), BOC, Styx, ELO, Allman Bros, Amboy Dukes, Lynard Skynard, Dave Mason, The Outlaws, Little Feat, UFO, Thin Lizzy, The Raspberries, James Gang, Eagles, Aerosmith, early VH... Richie Blackmore is fucking LEGEND! BTW - Steve Morse is a close friend of Ed's, and has also played in the studio with Ed. I asked SM if he knew if Ed ever used a VOX/Marshall rig? He replied; "Yes, but not many people know that. It's not a rig I would play out of - but it works for him...". He was also talking about jamming with Brian May of Queen... I would love to hear that!

Seriously.....i need to stop reading this. I have the worst headache.

I don't fucking know, I take a plexi build amp and turn it on 10 and record it and it sounds the same, there's your evidence you can hear it with your ears and yet some people would rather believe in the lost city of Atlantis and talking snakes and fucking crop circles and I dunno i'm outta this one my head hurts too ow

I know pratically nothing of EVH or his rigs, but here is a thought:

That last bit authenticity that people are chasing... It could have zero to do with the guitar and amp itself, and everything to do with the room sound in the studio, the mics, the mic amps, the compressors, the desk, the eq's, mastering, etc...

I know from personal experience how much the sound of your guitar can change from when you recorded it, to when the track is mixed.

Just my 0.02c.

Good point! I don't have much experience with studio work, but I imagine there's a whole new world of tones to explore if one has the access to such equipment. I saw VH open for The Rolling Stones in 1981 (I think it was 81?) Ed's sound live sound didn't even come close to his studio tones. He could have been playing through an MXR dist. pedal and a Ampeg amp for all I know?

I just don't hear anything that sounds "fresh" to me? The last two CD's I purchased was Soundgarden "Louder Than Love" and Mother Love Bone "Apple" - and that was when they were first released!

well thanks, he's a huge inspiration. And always will be.

yea he and Matt Bruck are pals, they are great guys, both of them. Wolf is really cool too. People talk lots of nonsense about Ed, I think he's one of the sweetest, most generous dudes around.

Matt took this pic on the roof of 5150:

that's awesome Pete. I'm a little younger than the guys that grew up in the era where Ed changed the game, but I've always respected him as one of the legends. I got a whole new appreciation for the kind of person he is though after Dimebag's funeral, that was all class.

What did Van Halen do in Dimebags funeral?

Dime was a huge fan and Ed gave up his original Black/Yellow guitar to be buried with him. Pretty awesome gesture...

Sweet...I'm stuck home on a Friday night with the flu...thank god there's an EVH plexi thread for entertainment.

Regardless of what's being played, that SL68 clip is fucking haunting me...freaking awesome!

I wonder how many sales inquiries that clip has generated at Suhr? I know I was one...saving my pennies now. :D

My post was for the purpose of other to read, and possibly have some fun with... None of us can say for sure exactly what brand of underwear Ed was wearing the day he recorded "Running With The Devil" - but that's not really the point - is it? the point is, is that this is one of the sure methods Ed used in getting his sound. And yes - anyone with an ear can hear that Ed isn't playing through a Marshall with gain pedals!
Of course... the inevitable backpedal. I guess you don't know for sure that a Vox was used on VHI and WACF, which is all I was really saying...

echodrive":1ynvh5rx said:
You jumped into the thread for no other reason than to stir-up shit! :jerkit:
I jumped in to clear up your conjecture that you posted authoritatively as fact...

echodrive":1ynvh5rx said:
Your obviously a narcissist personality, who can't stand it when someone else has info that you're not privy too.
  You are obviously a person who spews stuff as fact and then has to backtrack. You have no info for me to be jealous of.

echodrive":1ynvh5rx said:
I've posted a pic of Ed playing through a Vox/Marshall rig - where is your proof?
Proof of what? All I said is that I doubt VHI and WACF were a slaved Vox, which is an OPINION and, as such, doesn't require proof. And once again, a picture of a Vox onstage at one gig doesn't prove anything except that Ed had a Vox onstage at one gig. Also, as I said, every stage pic I've seen of when they were actually signed includes no Vox amps as you'll surely agree...

echodrive":1ynvh5rx said:
Oh wait! You're Steve from let me guess - L.A. - right? The pointed Charvel "glam" guitar gave you away!
Yes, ummmmm... gave me away as what?
