Inside: EVH's touring EVHIII amp head pics I took yesterday

The reason why the load resistor is set higher than the selected impedance of the amp selector is because a 100 watt Marshall head at full volume into a resistive load set to the same impedance as the head will put out way over 100 watts, try 160-180 watts. This is because the amp will go into class B mode. When a cabinet is being played at full volume its impedance climbs, especially higher if it is a sealed closed back cabinet. This higher load tends to keep the amp at around 100 watts. A head played into a resistor of the same value will fry the primary windings of the transformer due to the excessive A.C. currents. So increasing the load resistor by at least twice sort of keeps the A.C. currents in the range that the output can deal with, at full volume.

This is very interesting, and may lend some credit to Ho's ultimate attenuator design.

TGP ..... that is for arguing over stuff like tone is in the fingers or gear ..... and other chicken or egg argument's. I think ?

TGP....is that where tag lives? Tag knows tone?

tag and echodrive should meet. the world as we know it would end.

Tag Knows Tone! And how to play "Politician" badly... He actually ended up getting banned from TGP.

"I've got very well dialed-in, primarily preamp-centric distortion, with a moderate amount of power-tube distortion – what I hear on the album is the reverse: primarily power-tube distortion, with a moderate amount of preamp distortion. As we find with amp modelling that's preamp-centric, no amount of perfecting the voicing in the preamp distortion can ever truly nail the dynamic depth and response of power-tube-centric distortion voicing..."

Obviously the public school system didn't take into consideration your special needs... :scared:

fuck off troll.

take your EVH fanboi arguing back to the metroamp forum where it belongs.

  I thought that was TGP?

TGP is only minor compared to George's forum. it is so bad over at metro, they have a forum section dedicated to just EVH fanboi arguing for people just like echodrive here who get arousal trying to copy Eddie's tone

I like George's forum, but I stay out of the VH threads.

I just don't get the obsession, and I grew up with VH.

This is messed up! I'm looking at the pic, and it appears that Ed is plugged into his EP3 before anything else? He may be plugged into a series of pedals, as there's a "blind-spot" in the photograph. I just don't see how Ed could achieve those tones with an EP3 plugged into a pre-gain position? It also appears that Ed is using the Plexi as a bi-amp to a 50 watt Marshall. It also looks like he may have been running an ABY setup, with one amp being attenuated - then into the VOX?

i liked the forum as a whole for about 1 week before i got a taste of the cork sniffing and arguing over minute' details, i used to hang over on the plexi and "other amps" sections the most, but after that i decided to move on. i think thats where i met you at the racer x forum? lurked there for ages before coming here.

TGP, HC, georges forum, etc - just not the same as RT. the user to troll ratio is much better here, although with AMAQ and echo it seems more of them are migrating.

yeah, me neither. i was really big into van halen back when i started playing guitar but cared more about the songs than the tone on the songs.....it sounds OK but its definately nothing worth doing what echodrive here has decided to turn this thread into

i always thought the point of playing music was to find your own tone, not someone elses.

i guess if you have nothing better to do. steve mentioned its not hard to get close if not spot on with $30 in parts and an effects loop these days. match the right wood/pickup and you're good to go. not hard, not complicated.

I love EVH because of the riffs he wrote back then, not so much the sound he had. I just think I look for different things when I hear someone play.

I don't really hit the Racer X board much after Jason passed away. Some cool guys there, and every now and then you get Paul, but I check in once a month.

Thanks for the pics Brad.
Who knew a few pics of a dusty/cig burned amp would open up this can of worms

By the way, wonder when Fender will release the "Ed's personalized 5150III" version

^ A Custom Shop 5153 ???

Complete with cig burns, sharpie setting suggestions and a built in slave called the 'Fox' :D

I still have the magazine with Ed's setting for the original 5150 and they're pretty damn close to the settings in the 5150 III owners manual. I'll try to scan both tomorrow and post.

cool, if you have it and can scan it before OldskoolNJ gets back home to be able to scan his that would be great. i'm real curious to see how different they are from my personal 5150 settings.

Here's the scan from the article and also a scan of the 5150 III's settings from the owners manual.

Ive been reading this thread and after all it supposed to be about his amp that he is using at present. I witnessed a soundcheck at NC State University in 1983 and all I can say is. It makes no difference what kind of amp as long as it Marshall oriented. That fucker can play.

Nice to see he backs off on the mids... I knew there was a sort of mid cut or scooped element to Ed's tone. I always find it focuses my tone more when I dick around with Panama. Mids wide open don't cut it for me and soften the tone too much. Lately I've been keeping my mids at noon or 11 o clock and I'm getting some killer tones out of my MTS stuff. These Randalls are kick ass.

Mids wide open soften the tone?? Backing off the mids softens the tone, cranking them harshens (but often puts more body in the tone). I've never heard of cranking the mids to soften? Usually, when you want a little more point to the tone, you turn up the mids.

I think it also very much depends on the amp. Some amps, have more or less midrange territory anyway. What might sound good on 5 on one amp, might not sound the same on another. It might need to be on 7 or 3 to get the same sound.
