Ok Joes amp is a Jose mod with a insert loop right before the cathode follower in the amplifier. When I worked with him he use to use the pcm41 in this loop and the setting would be 0 ms but what he would do with it is boost the output knob so the unit would act like a extra gain stage. This is the whole secret of his tone. He then would take a line out to 2 sde3000's and then to a h&h power amp. So he had a wet dry wet rig. Thats all.

Sweet!! I kind of figured that Joe, along with a killer modded Marshall, did some sort of boosting/reamping/rewhateveryoucallit

Wow! Thanks for that Dave! Which of your mods would be the most similar to what Joe is running?

Talk about some real info and no guessing.

You know my PCM-41 is going in the loop of my Quick Rod as a boost tonight

I agree...that was great info, thanks! I believe in the Huge Racks thread that Dave said his Bown Eye mod would be close to Joe's Jose Mod.

This is way, way off topic - and maybe I shouldn't even bring the subject up, but does (or did) he have a big problem with drugs? In some of those ozzy video's he looks extremely frail. I seem to recall something being said a while ago.

On topic, like some of the other guys here, I happened to hear an ozzy bootleg live CD a few years ago (with Joe Holmes) and I was instantly amazed at how aggressive his tone and feel were. I really hoped he would have hung on for a CD or two.

There is dry in his wet cabs. The 41 wont work right in a normal loop. As far as mods I could do a traditional Jose with the insert for his sound.

Thanks Dave!! How did he control the amount of dry to the wet cabs...line mixer?

Ahh now i see why he had the insert loop in the amp.. In the diagram i have of Joe's rig, it shows the PCM41 in a loop in the amp and i always wondered what the point of that was.. as it shows him using Wet/Dry/Wet with 2 x SDE-3000 delays.

Interesting, i wonder if that trick would work similarly with an SDE-1000 or SDE-3000 instead of the PCM41?

are you able to post that diagram please?

Sure, here it is:

 This thread has gotta be one of the most interesting reads on this forum at the present time. Very Cool info. Is it just me or does anyone else notice in most of these clips on you tube while Joe is playing awesome, Ozzy is not singing too well at all????? YUK! I like Ozzy but I am begining to wonder if he got a pass on too many unacceptable preformances? Someone should have got that mutha a pitch correction unit.

thanks Dan, Ive actually seen that before, maybe it was Guitar Shop

I saw Ozzy in 1981 (with Rhoads!!!!) and '83 with Jake and '88 with Zakk and '95 or so with Joe Holmes. I don't remember ever seeing Ozzy where his voice was good or on pitch. Every live video or pro release he's ever done is probably extremely doctored.

He used the mix knobs on the delay and the insert loop was a option on jose mods

Wow...talk about a streamlined rig for WD/D/WD...very cool. I've been lucky enough to see Jake, Zakk and Joe and there really was no comparison when it came to live tone...Joe's just blew them away.

In fact to this day the best live tones I have ever heard were: Joe/Ozzy, EVH/VHIII tour, Scorpions/countless tours and Amir Derakh/Rought Cutt tour opening for Dio...how's that for a vintage nugget.

For guys like me who don't solder or know much about amp electronics, is this loop you're talking about something that's not done by most amp companies as a regular leffects loop, because of its placement in the circuit? Is this like a SLO loop then?
Just trying to get a better understanding of this, since Chubtone's Splawn loop wouldn't work you said.

Cheers.

It's simply just an insert in the amp, so there's no buffering or circuitry like a proper FX Loop would have. Just a Send and Return jack, interrupting the circuit at a certain point. If you check out the Jose mod schematic that's floating around the net, there's 2 of these passive insert loops in the schematic.

The Cameron CCV has a passive insert loop like the one Dave's talking about, although the placement of the insert loop is probably different in the CCV thats all.
