YUP you got it. Dave

Hey Dave,

Just to clarify.. In that Jose schematic, are those insert loops in the same placement in the circuit as the one that's in Joe's Jose modded Marshall?

I've been lucky enough to see Jake, Zakk and Joe and there really was no comparison when it came to live tone...Joe's just blew them away.

In fact to this day the best live tones I have ever heard were: Joe/Ozzy, EVH/VHIII tour, Scorpions/countless tours and Amir Derakh/Rought Cutt tour opening for Dio...how's that for a vintage nugget.

See now, I read this and I put a mental check mark next to jabps as someone I will definitely listen to as far as tonal opinions go because of how closely aligned our ears must be.

Killer thread, I'm actually taking notes :D :D

So...to boil it down: get a rippin' Fortin Cali mod or a Friedman Brown Eye mod with that loop mentioned earlier and a lexicon PCM-41 and you're good to go

Ohh...and pick up some killer chops, if you need them

Stalking I thinks it's called

Guys I was really lucky...from about 91-00 I was a ticket manager in Nashville, 5 of those (94-98) years as our Amphitheatre ticket manager...sadly it's closed now but man...talk about gear heaven. Regardless of how busy I always checked out the gear.

During lunch and dinner break on show days at the Amphitheatre I'd be there scowering the stage, checking out gear...checking out all the secret gear that was supposedly hidden...NOT. <<Anthrax reference for the youngsters. Very cool job, watched alot of shows on the stage wings, got to learn about the music business first hand...contracts, riders, tour managers, production managers, stage managers etc... You name it. I've seen/heard so many concerts over the years it's really hard for me to go to them now...unless I'm playing. Actually one of the coolest things was watching the Scorps, they took over the Amphitheatre for a week to rehearse for an upcoming tour...I'd eat lunch watching them rehearse.

But yeah even back in the day Joe's tone just flat out blew me away...I remember thinking exactly just how amazing it sounded and can't even remember Ozzy, seeing Ed on the VHIII and thinking...my god this is the best tone I've ever heard from him, the Scorps...everything was always perfect, just the right amount of gain, clarity and depth...almost machine like. And then Amir...when I was younger...his tone was just huge, clear...Chris Hagar the other guitarists sounded like french fries, even Vivians tone that night wasn't even in the same ballpark.

So yeah of all the bands I've seen...guitar/tone wise those are the best hands down. Those are the ones I've never forgotten that have stuck with me.

Oh and I never got to see Randy...had tickets but had to sell mine to another friend, got grounded by the parents. The tickets were for his last show in Knoxville.

I'm just like everybody when it comes to Joe...waiting.

No. If you have a Fortin Cali or Friedman Brown Eye, you already have tons of gain. What you want is a standard Jose mod from the schematic floating around with the loop as discussed and a PCM-41. Joe is using the 41 as a boost in one of those inserts - you wouldn't need that with those other mods...

I agree with this although Mike or Dave Friedman could build an amp where you could add the insert and PCM41. With that said, I think A cali Mod with a w/d/w would surprise the hell out someone looking for that type of sound. I'm not saying its 100% Joe's tone but it's cool as shit lol :D

Oh yeah... Just call me Mr Hype Machine. :hys: I have a bad habbit of pimping out stuff I dig but the naysayers seem to neglect or forget that i still use everything that Ive pimped out

nice to see some other Joe Holmes fans around here! i saw him in the mid 90s with Ozzy and was blown away. i wish Joe came back instead of Gus G for Zakk's replacement. not only was his tone great but i really dig the 70s strats with floyds, added 22nd frets, bridge hums and that custom control layout he uses.

anyway, here's a pdf of info i scanned from young guitar on him....

can anyone translate it??

Agreed!!

A Cali Mod hooked up W/D/W will get super close... even closer if you use either the SDE-3000/SDE-1000 or PCM-41's for the delays. Those sound very different to other delays, and the modulation section in them is the key to that sound too. Very warm sounding. Other delays won't get the tone anywhere near as close.

Set the Cali to the Tight setting, Gains at 2 o clock and Saturation switch to either of the two gainier settings and you're there!

With that said, i could add an insert loop into the Cali to do the same thing as what Joe did, and you could do that with the normal Cali Mod and a PCM41. Just use the slightly less compressed setting and dial the gains to taste. It would sound great!

Of course they could! Dave already said he could build a standard Jose mod with the insert. What I'm saying is that the PCM 41 would not be necessary in the insert for GAIN, which is what Joe uses it for in that insert - hence 0 ms delay... With a Fortin or Friedman mod you wouldn't need the PCM 41 for gain, with a straight Jose mod you would use it since they have less gain...

Oh yeah, btw - I think my Egnater Seminar amp with a w/d/w using my axe micropitchshift preset would surprise the hell out of someone looking for that type of sound. I think I'll get much closer with my amp though...

  Yup... My amp won't have the insert, but will have a proper loop. Depending on what it sounds like, I may change some of the circuit because I don't want someone to have to buy a PCM-41 to get that tone...
