Join me on a magical journey: Metro Plexi Superlead Build

[1. There's a bit of hum, even without a guitar plugged in. I think it's 60 cycle hum from the mains. I have the neutral lead from the mains plug bundled with the power transformer's primaries and secondaries (running to the power switch). Should I unbundle it and just leave it running up in the air, straight to the switch? Any other causes of hum I should look at?
That hum is normal for that amp bro...

You're my hero, Larry. :)
Him's help due, who's building a MetroAmp kit and even that one, I actually want to build for myself already two years (no time left over  ).

Is there another way of wiring up the presence control so it doesn't see DC?
Shure, you'd need a 25K presence pot instead of the 5K and additional a 4.7K resistor, then wire it up 'new fashion' like i.e. in a 2203 MV model. Check the 2203's schem!

Is the hum still there, when you close the amp's volumes?
Swap preamp tubes around, maybe it's beneficial?

Hold on, let me check...

With all the controls at zero, there is a faint hum/buzz if I listen close to the speakers.

With both of the volumes at zero, each EQ control (bass, middle, treble) adds more and more hum/hiss as I turn them up. With the EQ (bass, middle, treble) at zero, there is NO noise on the volume controls until they get up around 9 or 10. And even then, it's not that bad.

Most of the noise is from the middle and treble pots, even when the volumes are at zero.

I spotted a huge problem in your pics......all your knobs are on 0 instead of 10.

  I was waiting for someone to point that out!

Took the pic before I plugged in for the first time ;)

awesome job man!! You made it look easy :)
i'd love to give one of these metro kits a try sometime. looks like you had a good time doing it!

If you think you're up to it, I highly recommend a Metro kit.

Excellent job. Looks good bro. This is the best way to learn about tube amps....just build one.

Shorts across the tube sockets get your attention and tend to "brown your shorts". Wonder if this is where the "Brown Sound" came from?

You need an Ultimate Attenuator. I happen to have one on the Classifieds :D

Nice job, looks great!

One of my Friedmans is in use at the Clermont Lounge this evening (loaned out).

 Shit, if I'd known I'd be there!

Never played a Friedman. You ever down for a mini ampfest for the people in the Atlanta area?

You gotta fill in that location man.

I would love the spare time to just get some home playing in. That is why I am typing this instead of baby sitting my amp at the Clermont, no time tonight.

That and the CL is just gross... :aww:

Two of my buddies go there all the time. It's usually where they wind up at 2:00am after hitting up the usual bars. That place is a disaster. And that's why it's amazing. :)

Ok, I have a LarMar PPIMV on the way. But before I install it, I think I'll try a pre-phase inverter master (like in the 2203/04). It's literally only moving one wire and adding a jumper to the treble pot. I'll wire it up outside the amp and just leave the added pot hanging there so I can test it on the bench. If I like it, then I'll find a place to mount the new pot. If I don't, I'll throw the PPIMV in.

Forget about it! You'll be disappointed!
A Pre-PIMV is killing all the nature of that beast!

So, recorded a short clip. I can't turn it up too loud because I'm in an apartment. But, I tried... So far, it sounds ok. For my taste, it's both too bass-heavy and too harsh at the same time. I have the bass at zero, presence at 11:00, Mids at 11:00, Treble at zero and I'm jumping the channels. Both volumes are at like.... 7:00 or basically almost off. Fucker is loud!

Once I get the PPIMV in I should be able to crank it up without shattering the windows.

I turn up both volumes to about 11:00 toward the end just to see how it'll react. Clips my mic, obviously. In the room, it's super harsh and treble-heavy. Don't really like it. Hopefully it'll change as it breaks in. At least it's pretty quiet. No real noise or anything. Most of the hum/hiss you can hear is from the flange pedal. :)

It's like I can't get any mids out of this amp. It's all bass and treble. It's not scooped, it's just like... I don't know. Too much bass and too much top end. If I turn up the mids, I get more treble.
