Thanks very much all, Dan, the clips were great, so percussive and 'rich' without being too 'gainy', loved the IE cover as well, made me smile!
As for the rest, so much help, and food for thought. Whilst IE is a main influence of the sort of sound I want (percussive, tight, harmonically rich but still with an aggressive edge) there are other influences, such as early Helloween, Maiden, Kreator, Annihilator, in fact a lots of 80s thrash and power metal as well as older NWOBHM.

Owe you all a beer!
Cheers

That's pretty much where I live.. Old-School Thrash, so I tend to gravitate to British-flavored amps, for the most part. A great amp to consider that is a real sleeper, is the Engl Artist Edition. It'll get there for sure.

With it being an Engl, a bit easier to get in the land of warm beer! (UK) thanks, will look into it

I saw a post from Reza saying his Larry order is past 3 years now and he doubts he would see it. I was thinking of ordering one this year but I think I might go with a Hermanson or maybe get a Gower/Wizard. I sold my Skeleton Key when I temporarily moved out of my house and I am missing it fiercely.

Thankfully the temporary separation has kicked off a second honeymoon with my Mrs once I came back home and I would totally do it again in a heartbeat but I still miss the amp. I haven't tried any of the newer versions of the quick rod but my only complaint with it or the Nitro is I wanted a little bit more saturation.

That's a good shout. Artist edition is a great amp.

@pintspiller if youre a big kreator fan maybe try the e636 mille amp? The extreme aggression?

The Artist is a good amp but the Quickrod in 2nd or 3rd gear (don't remember anymore, tbh) will probably get you closer without much preEQ (which the punch and bite controls in a Dino basically are) but Jon also uses Celestion T75s in his cabs and those have a considerable impact on the overall tone as well.

Yes, get a brand new 1960 with T75s. Any T75s will do, because obviously the speaker hasnt changed much over the years.

🤦‍♂️

Don't buy a brand spanking new cab just be aware that cabs/speakers as well as how you mic them have a considerable impact on overall tone but I don't care if some people want to deny this reality.

2nd Gear and a boost. That's where I was 75% of the time, although Gear 1 is pretty awesome too, boosted. I honestly prefer the Competition, since I don't care about cleans. 3rd Gear never really did anything for me..

Splawns are one of my favorite amps ever, but I think they fall short in the lead tone department. I like amps super rich in harmonics, and I never felt the Splawns were dynamic enough for lead playing. Rhythm, hell yeah. The Artist blows it away for lead players. It oozes rich harmonics.

I also read Jon used SLO's and Powerballs in the studio too.

His guitar tone is at least double tracked and layerd. He knows how to stack the guitars in the studio to make it sound so good. Besides, it’s not just one amp. Pretty pointless to pursuit this IMHO, unless you want to record.
