Woohoo the guitar arrived today this lunchtime! I havent taken pics yet, but i will do possibly tomorrow. When i opened up the case and had a look, the guitar was in serious need of a good cleanup and setup!

I completely took her apart and worked on cleaning up all the parts. I wire-wooled the neck and frets til they were gleaming, and then gave the Edge trem a clean too. It had loads of dust and dirt in it, and there was some grime on the trem blocks in the saddles. gave the body a quick wipe down with some polish and cleaned off any dust/dirt.

Restrung her this afternoon and spent some time stretching those strings in, its pretty much stretched out now and the trem angle and action is nice and low with minimal buzz!

Only thing i need to do is give the knife edges of the trem a little filing. I noticed there was some wear on them, but thought id see if it was ok and staying in tune. Well, after a full setup its not returning back to correct pitch when i do pull-ups, but stays in tune when i do divebombs. Once i have given the knife edges a file, it should be much better!

The neck on this guitar is killer!!! Very easy to shred on :) The stock pickups are ok, but il probably change them out soon for some PAF Pros (pink ones :D). Overall its a killer guitar and im very impressed with it!!!

Thanks Jaakko, its a killer guitar!!

Just been working on the knife edges, seems these ones were too wide and too flat. Its a 1999 RG550, and according to the Ibanez Rules site during 99-2002 a lot of knife edges were like .75mm when they should be about .4mm to float properly and keep the tuning stable.

I just filed the flat knife edge a bit and it improved the tuning slightly very slightly but not completely... il try filing a tiny bit more in the morning and see if it helps cure the problem!

Nice! You seem to know your stuff on them but I remind you not to file them too much!
BTW, I checked your myspace clips and you're a killer player, Dan! \m/

Check that the locking nut is tightened properly (not too tight) from the 2 screws that go thru the neck. If that's loose, it causes tuning stability problems when doing whammy tricks.

Thanks a lot Jaakko, i appreciate it man! :) I really need to record new clips though, i recorded those when i was about 16 and im 19 now, so my playing has improved since then!

I checked the locking nut which was nice and tight, also i checked the 2 screws that go thru the neck which are nice and tight too. I checked the condition of the trem posts and they barely have any wear on them. I also tightened the little set screws inside the trem posts.

Im pretty sure its the knife edge thats messing with the tuning, as i have checked everything else and its all fine. The trem angle and everything is fine too.

Dan

Try a little Chapstick on the trem posts...another 'Ibanez Rules' tip that works.
