Slayer, like their idols Venom are in no way a band for "musician" types.
Everything they had going on early fit perfectly. The songs, their ability, Logo, Image, blatantly Satanic/Brutal themes. Etc

Not when I can listen to Chuck Schuldiner's DEATH.
I remember back in 2001 (which is when I played a live show last unfortunately), I was in a thrash metal band. Had like 2 weeks to learn a bunch of songs and write solos for them, which is easy when you're 21 and full of fire for playing and experimenting. Anywho, they really liked Death and played some Spirit Crusher off of Sounds Of Perseverance. I was like holy shit, this band rocks! I had been listening to a ton of shit, King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, Carcass, and a bunch of other stuff that wasn't Metallica/Megadeth/Pantera, but Death kicked ass.

I'd also like to say, I am in no way a musical elitist, and love all types of music, from all types of genres. I appreciate things for what they are, and am not casting judgement...at all. I truly appreciate what they are, for what they are. Warts and all.

Also, I am not a theory master and know that chromatic movements can be awesome too... shit some of the best throughout history, looking at you be bop and all the other insane jazz stuff.

It is all acknowledged in the op. Just wanted to hear all the thoughts and opinions, regardless of who is minding the gate. 🤣

I couldn't imagine trying to get into Slayer now. Growing up in my early teens and playing guitar they were my favorite band for years and were the gateway to real metal for me.

Reign in Blood - Divine were incredible albums and yes Divine was their best album :)

Even the first two were decent, I was probably too young for those and didn't check them out until later, good for their time. I stopped listening to them completely when Diabolus came out and tried again buy buying God Hates, was disappointed. The title track was cool and they might have an ok song or 2 on those later albums but I just outgrew them I suppose.

But Rein in Blood - Divine are timeless🤘

I don't care about theory, I do like music that fits and intricate riffs. Slayer didn't have much intracacy but they were ruthless, raw and agressive. I'm sure most children today can outplay Kerry, especially regarding his solos but most of the modern shredders today are fruity.

Everyone has this saying about James Hetfield having "the best right hand in the business". Jeff and Kerry would both eat James for breakfast.

That's what I thought too....those damn right hands. It's more sheer brute plowing through, not about finesse at all. That is the appeal to me. The whole fuck you. We do us, and you will like it.

I draw a line too, and dont listen to much of the new. Actually bought the diabolical in musica crap, and was disappointed.

I love it all, but just like looking into it. I don't know how these guys did it for hours every night. For years.

Saw them on their extra long farewell tour, they played all the classics and the energy was great. Unfortunately Jeff had already passed but I'm a fan of Gary Holt so it's all good and they gave Jeff a nice tribute.
