OK that makes sense and good to know. I don’t know how late into the 80s the low voltage power transformers were used and if it varied where they were exported to.

@RedPlated has probably been thru a bunch. He would have more data on the amp voltages.

ias Jabs preferred the 2204, just great amps. The NMV's were just to hard to work with during that era, going that route now a Power Station is a must. Frankly of all the old Marshalls I had the only one I would like to have back based on "tone", not talking financially is the JMP 2204.

Ok, I need to ask what is 'Plate voltage'???? I guess I need to just ask the shop what it is? Higher is more aggressive?

Well, ok I don’t do it for too long; and, you have to stand off axis so you don’t blow your eardrums.
But, doing that even for just a few minutes is a rush that not even the Wizard or Coliseum I had, can match.

The Hell Razor KT150 is giving me more of that than my 72 or other wizards and coli’s. The Beta still punches more in the lows/sublows, the OG Uber, Blueface and Rev C still have more low mids, but overall don’t have as much punch. The HR KT150 isn’t shallow/lean in the lows or low mids like my 72, but those other particular amps are just monsters in those departments that wizards aren’t really known for

That is the high DC voltage inside the amp and is mostly determined by the power transformer (to keep it simple). The power tube plates are the tube component that sees the high voltage.

Higher is generally a little cleaner, tighter and with more bandwidth; ie higher highs and lower lows. Lower is generally warmer, dirtier, more loose, and more lush midrange.

Very much generalizing on the tones tho.

This makes sense based on all the amps I’ve had. It seems that a lot of lower PV I’ve played had more growl to them/less smooth, which would align I guess with those other descriptions

Good info,! Heres the kicker all. I have a Wizard MC II Mk II Ch 1 can get very Marshall ish. What will the 2203 do that this cannot?

In my experience, having owned a Wizard MC, MTL and currently a Hell Razor KT150 they can sound Marshall-ish on their own, but if directly compared to an actual vintage Marshall you’ll hear it really doesn’t sound like a Marshall, more to me like a middle ground of the Marshall’s and Hiwatt’s I’ve had with more gain and more modern

A good 2203/4 IME will still have a richness and growl throughout the midrange and uppermids that isn’t in the cards for wizards (which are much smoother in that region on powerchords) and they will also sound more raw (rough around the edges) and warm as vintage amps are, but the wizards have more clarity, definition and punch, so you just need both lol

What exactly are you looking for? You’ve had just about everything under the sun at this point. Not trying to be dickish and I apologize if it’s coming off that way but I’m kind of scratching my head at this point. Want aren’t you satisfied with the amp you currently own? You’ve posted clips of some pretty sweet gear and they sound great to me.

I agree with most but I feel my 72 punches harder, with equal clarity/definition than the 2010 MC100 I had, with the C transformers. And that’s with a simple modern Distortion pedal in front. Maybe the ‘harder punch’ is a perception though since the Marshall has noticeably better mids than any Wizard, imo.
But this amp is also a good notch above that 69 Marshall I brought to the fest, which you heard and liked. The 72 is bigger, more 3D/Rich sounding even with a pedal, than that 69.

What I'm looking for is what I don't have :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: Really I don't have a Marshall and those vintage Kerrang has been eluding me all these years, and,...well you get the idea!

With at least the 72 I have it punches harder than the MC I had with C transformers too and the MTL, but the Hell Razor KT150 isn’t like those wizards. It’s on a whole other level. Even with my 72’s better mids, it doesn’t change my perception, it just isn’t as punchy or muscular as my Hell Razor KT150 (150 watts, higher PV)

My 72 probably would be bigger and punchier than that ‘69 as well, but not more rich or 3D. That’s kinda the forte IME of ‘60’s Marshall over ‘70’s ones. You mentioned that ‘67 50w tremolo was also more rich/3D than your 72 and was for me as well vs my 72. I don’t really think the early ‘70’s NMV Marshall’s I’ve played were that impressive in the 3D or tonal richness department. It’s IME more about the punchy, brash, upper mid character and I do love that as well. Actually, even with ‘60’s I don’t really think 3D/richness is their greatest strength compared to many other top tier amps like Alessandro’s, Jim Kelley, Gjika, Ronin. I think it’s just more their voicing with the mids, kerrang and punch that makes them so satisfying to play

Less gain, less bottom end and way more treble.
I have never played a MKII but my Custom MK1 is TNT/ Dirty Deeds on CH1 and Highway to Hell/ Back in Black on CH 2.

Well, the 69 was right next to the 72, and the 72 was more 3D than the 69. The 67 was on another level entirely but was too tubby/bluesy amp for my taste haha. I don't often have the opportunity to A/B amps because in order to buy one, another has to go. But the 69 vs 72, I did that for about a week before I decided to sell/trade the 69. More punch, thump, 3D....as good as the 69 is, the 72 is better.

Yeah that’s the problem with the other amps I mentioned and kings I’ve played in the 3D department. They tend to be loose amps more suited towards bluesy stuff, but the quality of tone itself of many of the amps I mentioned are amazing and make my metal amps flat comparatively in tone. I wish I could find a high gain amp truly with that level of tone. You might be right in regards to that ‘69. You saw how I was very impressed by it, but once I tried that modded 72 50w I wanted that amp instead lol (and still do ?)

That 72 WAS special...if we do another fest down there, I'll bring my 72 to compare. Wish I'd have brought it in the first place.

Yes definitely bring it! That was probably the best sounding modded Marshall I’ve heard so far and one of my favorite high gain amps in general I think along with that modded vintage Scott stereo amp
