Load Box vs EVH

I don't think the load really matters if the goal is to slave the output through another Marshall that can be set to taste volume and EQ wise. The extra grind comes from that slave.

I use a Fractal LB-2, and it seems to work well. The Fractal and the Suhr seem to have the most accurate impedance curves.

I got a Harley Benton PA-100 attenuator to use with my new 1959HW. The PA-100 is still new in the box, I don't know if it will handle the power as it's rated for 100W, but SLP may spike or peak higher.

In the meantime, I just run the 1959HW without an attenuator and wear earplugs.

I'm considering a Fryette PS-2A which should be able to handle it @ 16 ohms:
  • Power Input: 200W @ 2/4 ohms; 150W @ 8 ohms; 200W @16 ohms

Way before Suhr came out with his Reactive load boxes, he introduced me to slaving a amp and I saw him slap together a resistive load similar to that Jose load box, sounded amazing! of course now his reactive load boxes will mimic a real cab better and have the option of speaker IR's..but maybe there's something to the tone of a resisitive load, more compression might be a good thing especially with a plexi type amp
I built in a resistive/reactive switch into mine.. it's easy to toggle back-n-forth and listen in real-time..

Resistive does not sound better.. at all.

and it's all your fault mentoneman
I am at the other end of spectrum. All I do is run my variac’d/loaded Marshall into my rack. Now that you posted his epic rack rig rundown I want to add a true clean channel to that. It will probably snowball from there.

So it’s both yours and mentoneman’s fault!

?
the scholtz and the marshall “power bake” were notoriously molten after extended use.
a gtr friend of mine would cuss every time the power brake was mentioned due to it burning his forearm between sets one night, while trying to look cool by leaning on his marshall half stack to chat with chicks, and instead screaming like a schoolgirl. he later fried an old marshalls of his.

i had the thd, komet airbrake, and still have the rockcrusher and juice extractor. my friends nearby currently have the fryette ps stuff. great sounding but both were experiencing issues. turns out:

"The internal fuse was blown. It was blowing because of the failure of the line voltage spike suppressor capacitor. That has now been replaced with a higher tolerance part."

just fyi power station guys!

i once played a germino masonette with a Ho (pre-ultimate) attenuator, which was an early load box with built in ss power amp, and it sounded great but looked a bit light in build quality.
I just had to go thru my Juice Extractor, had some compnents expire. It gets pretty warm as does the Hotplate.
Never tried the Power Soak myself, a friend still uses one from time to time.
The Hotplate I use more as a load than attenuation. Works better for me that way.
The PS-2 I just got recently, but for slaving / reamping I really like it. So far direct with irs, not as much. Could be my irs are not that great.

Will look into those. Rock Box 1-2 and 3 are what I have I think. Also some Redwirez.
I bought some individual ones of the Celestion website, as well..

The George Lynch and EVH ones are pretty good - depending on what tones you're looking for.

Lots of people keep saying the Suhr is the better RL. I had the Suhr RLIR and Two-Notes captor X at the same time, with the same IR’s and preferred the Two Notes. The difference wasn’t massive but preferred it for my use.

An acquaintance & big time producer/YouTuber told me he favored the Suhr RL IR after comparing to everything else out there.
He said the impedance curve was the best.

The optic of how this post was created was not which load box/attenuator is everyone's favorite but which one has a robust enough design to withstand a plexi dimed into it day after day like EVH did to no end. This is about which piece can you trust the most with your high priced plexi?

Who gives a fuck about your IR...this is about saving your amp from certain peril.

Well, as an example; a 4x12 cab loaded with 70 watt speakers is gonna be rated for 280 watts..

It's easy enough to check the plate next to your cab input and get this info, then use it as a design point to spec the power resistor(s).

This wasn't directed towards you...hell, you made your own load box.

This explains in part why, when I bought the PS100, I still preferred the tone of the cheaper, yet gets SUPER hot Pulse resistive attenuator. Sounded and felt much better to me than the PS. Sold the PS.

Totally and utterly disagree, in my experience with the PS100, vs the Jettenuator clone I have, the Pulse(resistive)...the PS100 sounded far worse to me. Neither is ideal; without that speaker compression the NMV Marshall just doesn't sound right...but the PS altered the tone far worse IMO.

Now, of course your unit probably sounds totally different vs the Pulse/PS100....but I was disappointed with the PS100 when it just sounded like ass compared to the cheaper unit I already had. The PS is a great piece of kit though, for re amping, adding a loop etc to a vintage amp but if you need to really attenuate the signal down a bunch, the tone was just not good; and far worse than the cheaper Pulse.
