Mic for recording cab

Try it!!! It's going to blow your mind

57s are already really versatile, but two of them gives you exponentially more options
Dan, have you used the Sennheiser e835?

I had one at one point, thought it did a pretty decent 57 impression.

I'd say give the 57 a try. Figure out what you like about it, and what you don't, and then move from there.

I find that if a plain old 57 doesn't sound good, the problem is somewhere else in the chain, especially once you start to drop other instruments in. But I appreciate some people just wanna get different sounds.

I like the Beyer M201, but that's after spending some time with the 57. The M201 kinda sounds like a blend between a 57 and something warmer, I find. But keep in mind, the warmer and/or more neutral mids don't sound as up-front in the mix as the 57.

FWIW, I also really like the 57 on harsh vocals too granted you have a good pop filter between it and the singer.

I have used one for vocals, but never for guitar :dunno:

I imagine if it's based on a 58 (which is what it looks like) it would do great
You know, I could have been mistaken, but I used it as a replacement 57.

I’ve been wrong a time or ten…

I'd have to see the guts side by side, but it sure looks like a 57
I had that Sennheiser for my backup vocals, I was playing bass (my first instrument) in sort of an indie type band around ‘07-‘08.

After that, it was all I had and used it for everything/anything. Worked ok for what I needed.

I had no money.
But I had fun.

Edit: IIRC way back, early 2000’s I was still running an eMac and an external hard drive I assembled with Seagate (?) and Garage band.
Of course Apple back then released FireWire, which was touted as faster than usb. All my recording projects and final project were/are in that hard drive. Wonder where it is? Can that hard drive be converted to usb? Not sure how I would extract info off of that? My final project was recording my buddies band, all those protools files, he’d probably like to have. Album came out great!

You're doing it wrong if you don't have a 57 or two. Those SM7's also sound great in all the clips I've heard. The SM7 makes a very respectable vocal or broadcast mic also. After that I'd be looking for a nice condenser for a room sound. I like Warm Audio but oh-oh there's gonna be tariffs on that.

But, lately I have been using irs
My buddy has gone all in on this stuff.
He’s always talking about it.

Yet I still know nothing in regards to this stuff.

I’m still stuck in the days of yore…

Don't be swayed the technological terrors these players use. You'll wreck your tone forever and they know it!!! The digital doesn't wash off!!!!

Well, I have a room full of awesome cabs, but, the IRs sound so good....it is becoming a pain in my ass to bother mixing the cabs up anymore.

You can venture into the world fairly cheaply with the two notes captor x and some York IRs.

I chose to spend my money on a PS2.
That has kept me from the digital realm.
The ps2 can help you get into the IR realm also. You have a direct out that can go into an interface. Let me tell you...an ir fucking insanely replicates close micing. When i used to not want to mic, i would run into an IR. So fast

I can't imagine cabs being a problem in a home studio if the mics are always set up. Sounds like an excuse to be lazy, which is what most digital gear is centered around; convenience first, tone 2nd. I'll admit I spent all fri-sat tracking with a cranked Twin and it starts to get a little taxing sometimes. I supposed if I used IR's I could track silently all night.

My buddy tells me this also.

Trust me, he has a list of things for me to start purchasing…
