Mic for recording cab

I don’t even own a digital watch!

I’m still rocking an analog Iron Man watch, bummed my “indiglo” illumination quit on me though.
Yeah. When i was close micing, it went into my interface and into reaper.
When i was using ir, the di goes into the interface into reaper into ir.
Everything is digital to record at home.

Time to wake up the neighbors with something besides your HD.

Even when doing the line out, i would play at volume so that i got a good representation of what my fingers were doing. There is no better teacher of guitar than a loud tube amp
Truth. All the details and mistakes of your playing technique are revealed, for better or worse. Great is the risk, but greater the reward.

I’m honestly fairly new to the “gain” world. So just figuring out amp volume and where I like my guitars tone and volume.

After all those years jamming acoustic, I moved into a Strat and clean amp set up. Had some great amps. Couldn’t afford pedals or any attenuator that was out at the time.

Now getting into gain, amp gain and a Power Station, and you’re right, there is something special to a tube amp.

If you listen to my clips, you can tell when i have been practicing. It is night and day the difference. I am very inconsistent, but when i am practicing, it is much easier to listen,.lol
I haven't played today yet cause I played all friday and saturday. I'll probably start in an hour or two. If I don't get 90 minutes a day minimum my hand ain't warm for show and go.

I have a rode k2 that is really good for vocals and acoustic, but i kinda want something for just micing the cab.

Should i just go with sm57, or is there something else I should be looking at?
57 for sure!

E609 if you want something different but I'd recommend 57 first.

I can't imagine cabs being a problem in a home studio if the mics are always set up. Sounds like an excuse to be lazy, which is what most digital gear is centered around; convenience first, tone 2nd. I'll admit I spent all fri-sat tracking with a cranked Twin and it starts to get a little taxing sometimes. I supposed if I used IR's I could track silently all night.
I tear my recording gear down after each session as I have a long and narrow room for guitar recording which is across the hallway from my main studio.

You are underestimating one thing here. I did have my mics set up perfectly...But I have two little bastards running around bumping into shit, so I would have the perfect mic position until I didn't. Lmao. For awhile, I was scared to stack my cabs because I didn't want them to accidentally knock them down on themselves.

BTW that K2 should be making a great room mic. That's a great mic IMO.

i will make you a recording of it. I think it is a great mic for clean. It is amazing for acoustic guitar and singing.
For high gain, it does capture the in the room sound. It is just a bit distant. Not near as in your face as a sm7B. I tried close micing with it, but was nonplussed

I also just put a NOS 6dJ8 tube in it, so I am excited to try to mic the cab with it again

It's a room mic so it will sound more distant or open used alone. The idea is to blend it with your close mic. If I had enough tracks to work with that I could run two close mics and two room mics for every guitar take I would cause the sound is accordingly larger IME.

I have to be honest....going to get some heat here I'm sure but .... Those little Universal Audio do really damn well. The little SD-3 is a lot of mic for a little bit of cash. The modeling aspect of it is very cool and useful but I find the untouched, direct tone very appealing and very natural sounding.

Again, not an expensive mic at all. If I were building a collection, I would probably start with the SM and move onward but for my needs (guitar cabs) it does very well.
