MOD 50 vs. MOD 100

Hey,

I hear a lot of talk about how 50 watters lack the punch of a 100 watter. I always thought a big part of this was the cheaper 50 Output Transformers other companies put in 50 watters. I know Marshall does this with their DSL series. However, is this as big a difference with Egnater and other such companies? I would think the biggest thing at that point would just be headroom.

I know the Mod 50 is as high quality as the Mod 100.

For example, take the Randall RM50 and the Randall RM100.

I wouldnt' say any Heyboer trannie is cheap. Yes the Mod50 has a different feel than the Mod100, but honestly you're getting the more "gerth" and "punch" from 50 extra watt's of power. Similar like you are going from a 2x12 to a 4x12. Twice the speakers, will give you a bigger sound! I think it's more of a feel thing vs the Mod50 is made "cheaper" than the Mod100. Plus I know a lot of guys that are using the Mod100, are using it with 2 types of tubes...like Jason is using 6550s and EL34's...That's not a fair comparison.

NO, I didn't say a Heyboer tranny is cheap! You misunderstood. ;) I know the Heyboer is as good as a Mercury Magnetics.
I was saying some companies use cheaper, lighter transformers in their 50 wat heads like Marshall and use the better transformers in the 100 watter. I wasn't referring to Egnater with that comment. :)

I just wanted some feedback on what others have noticed. With a good quality tranny like those in the Egnaters, a lot of comments on punch, etc may not apply. I thikn it may be more about tightness and headroom with the 50 vs 100 on an even playing field.

Your talk about the extra "gerth" and "punch and bigger sound have me thikning I should look into another 100 watt head....but it would have to be the Mod 100, which I couldn't afford unless I sold the Mod 50 and found a used 100.

Other option would be to get the M4 and VHT power amp. As a cheaper route, I could get a Randall RM100 and mod the tranny/modules. That way I'd have both, the 50 watter and 100 watter.

The feel of the 100 watter is awesome,to be fair,I would say the tone is the same if the tubes, modules, etc. are the same but the feel man is there, both are great but the Mod 100 is a heavy mutha,it just has a tighter feel to me that all,and they are discontinued :D but I can see them doing a reissue down the road

Ho much do they weigh? I am betting the Randall RM100 would weigh as much.

Maybe I'll just wait to see what the new 1U is like. I just want them all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There seems to be a variety of opinions. I know guys who have the RM100 and Mod 50 say the Mod 50 has more gerth and sounds fatter. I know Joe Satriani said something similar in an interview. He enjoys the thickness of 50 watt heads.

I would think the 100 watter would be maybe tighter, some added clarity due to headroom and maybe some bigness.

I think the 100 weighs about 1,000,000 lbs. bro   but it sounds that big to

I have had both and IMO the Mod 100 sounds bigger, fuller and more toneful than the Mod 50's I have owned (3). I still have the MOD100

:D I just didn't want to rub it in :D

I've got both as well. The 100 has more headroom, but I actually prefer the 50 for most applications unless I need the extra power. I guess it's just a matter of preference. They both sound freaking cool! :m17:

Actually no. I am back to the GT E34Ls in the 50. I do dig them in the Mod 100 though mixed with 2 SED EL34s.
I just always end up going back to those tubes GTs in the 50. The 6550's just lack the sag the 34's have in the mids. I love the 6550's with the EG5 and MHG but my overall favorite is those GTs.
My current module arrangement in the Mod 50 is VX and modded EG3/4. The 6550s didn't feel right with the VX.

I can't comment on anything other than a MOD100 & I keep going back to the GT-E34L's as well! They sound GREAT in that amp!

I would like to get a 100 watt head as a second amp but can't justify or afford the Mod 100 unless I sold the Mod 50. Heck, I want both so I may have to get an RM100 and take it from there. :aww: ;) 70 lbs though, damn! I enjoy the weight of the Mod 50. I save the heavy lifting for the gym, not when I am playing guitar. :D

If not that, the new rack set up. Oh, decisions. :)

On tubes, Tung Sol EL34Bs are my current Mod 50 fav's. I'd like to try those GTs.

Jason, did you compare to the JJs? Or, even the TS-EL34Bs - love these!
I like the JJ E34Ls too,I have quite a few but the GTs seem a little diff, maybe the wings  never tried the TS ELs,just never needed to look any further, but the TAD 6L6sWGCs are killer too,in the Mod 100 I'm running Svets 6550s and GT E34Ls pretty nice combo.
