Most disappointing amp

Laney AOR 6 knobber. Everyone says "oh they're awesome, just like a JCM 800 but with more gain". LOL, no they're not. Sounds like absolute trash.

Peavey Windsor. Basically the same as the Laney. Sounds nothing like an 800. Has a horrible gritty distortion. Trash.

Friedman Runt 20. Harsh, tinny, thin, gritty. All the bad adjectives. Junk.

Early 3 channel Dual Rectifier non-multi-watt. Ew! Very disappointing. I just couldn't get that thing to sound like how a Rectifier should sound.

Marshall JVM410. Bland as it gets.
I have a 50 watt, Pro tube 6 knobber and it’s great up to 6-7, tops, on the preamp. After that it turns to mush. But the sound at 6 is a fantastic JMP/800-ish tone. All it takes is a simple boost and away you go to heavy’s-ville. I actually tend to run the bass pulled for the low end boost but put the control to zero and it thumps.

Count me in as another on Revv amps. Was excited to finally demo a Generator in person and was beyond underwhelmed at the overdrive characteristics. Bland smear of saturation.

Both wizards I have had. Both were mk1s, a MC and a MTL….just did not gel with them. Want to check the later offerings out, especially the Hellrazor, but found them brittle/sterile/grating in the room. Been several years so maybe my ears and tastes have changed
out of curiosity, did you get them to loud volumes? I could see that description on lower volumes- they need some volume to fill out and are very loud amps as a whole

My REVV Generator 120 was basically a $3k white noise machine.
Wasn't too impressed with my TH100 either.
Agreed, the Revv is a jack of all trades, master of none.

The Lil Fokker was a turd I couldn’t move fast enough. A flubby, loose mess, even boosted.

Didn’t dig the Stealth 100 at all, found it way too dark, compressed and overall uninspiring to play.

Marshall Origin 20w combo. Absolutely no break up that comes from tube distortion. Loud AF clean but not good clean like Fender or Roland. And no reverb. Takes pedals well though, but not the expected Marshall sound. When they said “low gain” they meant it.

Probably didn't help it's standing much that it followed up my NATAS. Was initially excited because there weren't a lot of choices at the time that remained articulate and defined with my ergs, and it was praised in every review.

Yep! This was 10-15yrs ago at this stage; want to say I was pairing them with a splawn cab with small blocks and a bogner v30/t75 cab at the time. Definitely agree at low volume they were worse, but found them to just be louder and grating at higher volumes. They recorded pretty nicely as it seems that sonic information didn’t translate to a close mic, but never enjoyed being in the room with them.

Marshall Plexi and Marshall JCM 800 until I got them modded then they were better

Diezel Herbert - Loved the cleans, the other channel lack punch and mids...and therte was a switch that could make it more scooped...yikes...
Engl Powerball - should be called NoBall...
Soldano SLO - Just not amazing...
Mesa dual rectifier - i dont remember the edition...it needed a boost...thanks...gone...
Marshall JVM 205H - Too much unusable gain
Framus Cobra - wtf...I got one because I saw Wolf Hoffman of Accept playing one...maybe he was on a marshall....
Engl Fireball 60 - What an anemic pos...
Peavey 5150 - Maybe not bad...I cannot gel with 5150 circuits...

lol! I’ve talked to other forum members off line about it as well…. Also had others play through it, and they didn’t care for it either. Maybe I got a bad one?!

Def a use case amp, imo.
Loved mine.

So, what do you like? :ROFLMAO:

These fit the bill:

1.) Some years ago I was doing a lot of shows and recording with a Peavey Vypyr amp. That thing could get some really, really killer heavy and lead tones. I had decided that I needed the newer, nicer VIP 3 for whatever reason and sold my trusty amp and picked one of those up.
I never played original, but i played the vipII and loved it. Glad i didnt pull trigger on III

I tried a TH and thought it sounded terrible. Was really excited for that amp
JCM 800 and anything else based on the JCM 800 circuit
I have never played one...need to try it. Obviously love marshall based amps, though

I 100% can see where you are coming from. My wizard W800 recorded so fucking good, but it was grating as fuck to play loud in my guitar room. But, I would take it to Matt's house, and it worked! So it was a combination of speakers and my guitar room. Matt's room is bigger and has carpet and a great shape to it. Mine is flooring and has a ton of natural reverb, but doesnt do well with crazy high end.

I bought it from EMG77 on here in like 2013, and sold it last year. We talked about it before I sold it, and he said it was terrible, and was sorry that I bought it lol. It never sounded like ANY clips that I’ve ever heard etc… just really strange

Are you an ERG player?
Feel like that's where it shined.
IIRC, it also sounded/responded a bit better to me with either all EL34s or KT88s instead of the 6L6/EL34 combinations it came with.
Probably most lackluster with 6L6 only.
My Thrasher is pretty similar, but tends to like any combination of tubes.

Yea, love me some ERG.. tried multiple tube combinations, NOS preamp tubes you name it.
