New 212 cabinet?

You should get a PortCity, but try one first, so you won't blame us if you don't like it.

I saw that on port city's website. looks bad ass!!!!

As soon as Eric gets one, he can give us a sound report.   ;)

Brian, too many things about the design send up red flags for me, the square port, the odd face plate that I think could get in the way of proper sound travel.
I'd have to hear one.

Which Scums are you parking there John???

I'm gonna just start with one M75-8XHP (on recommendation from Dave Friedman and Jim @ Scumback) and pop it in one of my Earcandy 1x12s and then try to figure out what I want to do next. I really should just get the Port City 1x12 OS, but the 2x12 OS is so sick I want it - even though I don't need it...story of my life. ;)

Cool. You and Eric try out the most speakers around here. I am always looking. I need to go up to Austin and get them to demo those new Austing Speaker Works for me. They have some blems I might be able to get a discount on. Scumbacks are definately in my "to try" list.

Problem for some of us like me is not having the abilty to play all of these cabs to compare.

I think you can understand, plus I have been told coutless times how this or that are the best thing since sliced bread only to be dissapointed.

I completely understand!

I actually think the Buzzbomb sounds excellent. I had the opportunity to hear it from the audience and was floored.

The best advice for you may have come from yourself! It seems you really love the buzzbomb, if it works for you buy it!

I have had conversations with builders about cabs and I hear a lot that you shouldn't use a square port because you are putting round sound through a square hole.

Obviously builders trying to sell you their design with round ports. Isn't that exactly what it says on the earcandy website? First off the Port city port is rectangular not square, it also has a slight angle up away from the floor, it is not parallel to the floor. As for the round sound consider this. The best way to describe the actions of sound waves is the think of throwing a pebble into a still body of water. The "rings" that emanate from the pebble hitting the water move In all directions at one. we've all seen it before. now imagine the back of your speaker cone as the source of the "rings" which it is, remember all of the air moved by the front of the speaker comes right out of the front at you. Once the soundwaves leave the back of the speaker they bounce around inside the cabinet against its walls until exiting the port, any shape port. There is no possible way the sound waves are still retaining their original shape, they've been bouncing around the inside of the cab and against each other. I really believe this is marketing hype. " rectangular sucks, round rules , which we just happen to offer."

the cab would offer the speakers no natural comression so you might have less sustain and signal loss.

Personally I wouldn't want a cabinet that offers compression, its in the dynamics that we as guitar players create our own styles/feel. We can all play the same simple riff or lead but its how you play it, the nuances you add or subtract, your cadence that gives the riff life . Most of that is demonstrated through the dynamics we use while playing. A cab that adds compression would deaden some of the dynamic range thus leaving a more narrow palette to work within.

As for sustain I notice no more, no less, i get the same sustain my guitar provides. I don't see any way to have signal loss, what the output transformer feeds the speaker, the speaker reproduces.

Odd designs scare me. I bought a cab that was supposed to be incredible and the guy had the front baffle where the speakers werre mounted, slanted up a bit. Everyone I played with laughed and said it sounded like a little am radio. :aww:
So that 45 degreee angle he is talking about in the cab. :scared:

The design only seems odd because it is not the "traditional" the traditional designs that never took sound into account. Id call it different or improved not odd. The 45 degree angle he describes is a baffle inside the cabinet placed so the sound waves heading downward off of the floor don't hit the bottom of the cab square, they are directed out of the front of the cabinet by the baffle.
the odd face plate that I think could get in the way of proper sound travel.
The faceplate in no way affects the sound waves, the speakers are mounted in the empty spaces between, there is nothing between the speaker and your ear besides grill cloth. Its just for sexy looks, lol.

Well enough of me blabbing on about Port city, hopefully this has been helpful to you, good luck in your tone quest, and don't forget that quest is never ending anyway!

Yes, it has been very helpful. I appreciate the info! I just wish it was as easy as rolling into a store and trying one like with the Egnater cabs.

How about the bass? I talked to a guy who owns the regular PC and the OS 212. He ended up getting rid of the OS cab because he said there was way too much bass for anything other than metal.

I have tried the 1x12 & 4x12 USA Egnater cabs and by far the best sounding one was the 4x12. It had V30's in it and it just ripped. The over-size 1x12 sounded good but just didn't rattle the innerds like the 4x12 (and it had a different speaker). I tried the 4x12 and 1x12 at the Egnater shop and the 2x12 at a GC.

At home I have a Carvin Legacy 2x12 with V30's and an EC Buzzbomb with GM's. At this point I'm actually torn between the two cabs; the buzzbomb just fills the air with sound and is very articulate. It really smooths out the highs and controls the lows. The Legacy cab has a very raw, primal sound that I really like. I've also played a Carvin Legacy 4x12 with greenbacks a few times and thought they fizzed out a bit too much.

Just my $.02 :)

Rince,

buzzbomb just fills the air with sound and is very articulate - that is why I like it. I have the sugar cones which are supposed to be his best but sometimes I wish I had just gotten the Greens.

How did the Egnater 212 compare to the 412??? I still want to try the 212. I know Eric and the guys love em!

I tried the Tourmaster out on a lunch hour and played a p.o.s. out of tune epiphone through it. I didn't really crank it either. I can't fairly judge the 2x12 to well under those conditions. I wasn't unimpressed, but I was just flipping through the channels and trying to tune the guitar at the same time. Wish I could give you a better review but I spent about 10 min tops with it. I tried the Rebel 20 at another store with the little Egnater 1x12 cab and thought it sounded pretty nice but it definitely lacked bass presence.

I think port shape important.

You don't see high end speaker co's using slot porting. It's kind of old science.
With wave forms... it bounces and is still round.
If you throw rocks in a pond at one time...they remain round.

I still want a Eggie.

High end speakers use "tuned" ports purposefully. I have seen studio reference monitors with slot ports many times. The Port city is a "detuned" design all frequencies allowed to exit freely and evenly, apples and oranges there.

If you ever see a Port city anywhere, give it a chance and play it, you'll be pleasantly surprised. If seems as if your trying your hardest to find reasons not to like it and have never even heard one. They are starting to pop up everywhere just give it some time and you'll probably find one, hell even Opeth has em now. Where are you located anywhere near NJ?, you can play mine if you like.

If the Egnater is the way to go for you, congrats and good luck with it! Rock On!

I agree here. My KRK V8's have slotted ports similar to the Port City cabs. Good point :)

Wonder if there is anyone in IL that has one I could jam on!

Where in New Jersey? I am outside Philadelphia. I would like to see if any local shops start to carry them. However, custom cabs never end up at most shops.

My cab is located in Flemington NJ, if your seriously interested in checking it out that cool, but in two days I leave for tour for 6 weeks so it'll have to be in the next two days or after I return. Even if you get another in the meantime and still want to check it out we can work something out.

Yeah they have been pretty hard to track down in stores, not too many Boutique shop around this area anyway. (unless you know of some; fill me in!) Russo's music in Trenton is kinda cool but not much else...even the Manhattan stores are pretty lacking in Boutique gear. hmmm I wonder if Ultrasound in Manhattan might have any Port Citys? ill check it out.
