I still say it's best to err on the side of caution. I'm not buying the numbers either, but it's obvious that there is a nasty virus about. I don't see anything wrong with taking precautions to help keep those with a compromised immune system from contracting it. I'm not sold on the masks, as anything viral will go right through them. I believe only an oxygen fed system will prevent viral transmittance.

It has been said that when the human body recycles the expelled CO2 instead of fresh O2 the body thinks it is suffocating and triggers suppression of the adaptive immune system. So constant wearing of masks which you keenly point out the majority can not filter out virus particle which are much smaller than bacteria may in fact have somewhat deleterius effect. We have to keep up our immune systems with Vitamin D(sunshine) and supplementing vitamins/minerals. The doctors and nurses on the front line have admitted to taking HCQ as a prophylactic but of course it will kill the average citizen if taken for Covid19.
