For versatility, I'd say Pod HD500 + DT50.
Thanks for the suggestion...

Still thinking more along the lines of a traditional half-stack and small-ish pedal board...

PT100. 3 great channels and a top notch loop. Clean, rhythm, and solo. You can pull off most anything your looking for with this amp. It takes pedals well too. If you're looking for something cheaper.....go with a JVM.
Thanks for the suggestion...

The PT's I've heard clips of sound killer and definitely have me curious. What's the going rate? Are you talking about the JVM 410/205 series?

I think the PT are going for around $2500 or so.

Yea, that's it. JVM 410/205 Series. The 410 is definately versatlie.

Peavey Vypyr 120 head? Analogue distortion, digital FX, tube power section. Presets and control it all with a Sanpera pedal with one-cable running downstage and it's not expensive.

I have the 60W 1-12 combo (w/ KT66 and a 12AT7 in the PI slot) and think it sounds pretty good. I dig the grab and go convenience. Great for cover gigs. Not for everyone but I find it a good compromise.

My Budda Superdrive 30 series II does what you are asking and i'm in a similar cover band right now. Just that and a tube screamer variant and I can cover anything I want pretty damn well.

I have one of the smaller Vypyr's as a practice amp and don't much care for the tones, at least not for a live situation. The one's with the tube power section may be better (I haven't given them a listen), but I'm inclined to steer away from them. I appreciate the response, though...

Look for an Egnater Mod50. You can swap out modules to suit the set list. Sometimes I wish I still had my head, because yeah, lugging around the giant rack rig is a little cumbersome.
Thanks for the suggestion...

I think I'd like something a little more traditional. A half-stack and pedal board sort of an approach...

I don't want to beat a dead horse because if you're not interested, you're not interested. It may be much more traditional than you may think. With a MOD50, you essetially get 4 channels, 2 per module. If you go MOD100, you'll have 6 channels, but it weighs a TON. It's looks just like any other amp head to the untrained eye. Again, if you're not interested and are completely aware of the amp, how it looks and how the modules work, my apologies for revisiting this post. But, honestly, for a cover band, it doesn't get much better than this rig. Just my $0.02. :D

That could be an option. I wish there was one close by to test drive. The clips I've heard sound decent.

Thanks for the additional info (you thought I was going to say "suggestion", didn't you)... :D

I'm aware of the amp, I just don't have any personal experience and really have no way of test driving one. Consequently, it would take a leap of faith to go that route. I've heard some clips and it can ceratainly be a viable option, but I worry about going the modular route, never being completely satisfied and then spending excessive amounts on modules to get what I want. Could be that I'm over-thinking it, though. I'll research some additional clips and info.

Thanks again...

If you don't want to go the Kemper/AxeFX route I'd go with a Bogner Ecstasy 101B. It will cover the material you posted and is fairly versatile.

I see that Bogner mentioned on here fairly often but don't know much about it. Is the 101B a two channel amp?

Bogner XTC 101B or 20th. I have the same kind of band. Clean is chimy and clean (think U2 etc) I set Blue channel to light drive (think Foo Fighters matchbox 20 etc). Then you can boost blue (think Stranglehold Zeppelin etc) then red channel high gain for Slither, VH etc and boosted Red for the heaviest stuff and solos. 3 Channel amp with boosts for all 3 channels give you a ton of flexability. Works for me and sounds better than anything else I have tried....and I've tried alot. Another choice is Elmwood M60/90. Great amp and very flexable with 2 channels plus boost for each channel. JVM Marshall is another good choice and so is EVH 5150III

There's a lot to think about there - much appreciated. What you described is pretty much waht I'm looking for and the simpler I can make this (head, 4x12, small pedal board) the better.

it 3 channel amp, clean, red and blue. The blue channel is worth the price of admission imho. The101B is the El34 version. 100W but also has 1/2 power/old new switch that knock it down considerably. You have foot switchable boost and loops.

check out their site. http://www.bogneramplification.com/cust ... syInfo.php

The Shiva could also do what you want but I've only played one for a little bit asn really liked it. I have the 101B with matching Bogner 4x12 w/V30's

JTM45.
Small, light, clean. A few pedals (delay, chorus, boost, boost) and your done. Perfect tone.
Thanks for the suggestion...

That's a single-channel, isn't it? What would you do for songs that require a "real" clean? Turn off the boost(s) and roll back the volume?

Yup. The JTM has my personal favorite cleans. With a couple boosts you can cover everything from cleans to full on flamethrower. It doesn't hurt that I rarely use high output pickups. Amp stays real clear and defined.

+1 on the Shiva.

I use a Shiva with pedals, (OCD, BB-Preamp, Fulltone Fulldrive) and an Intellifex in the loop for delays & chorus. Covers pretty much every cover genre I've ever needed.

VHT UL or CL. I have the 50CL as well and I really love that one and have bee playing it more than my Bogner. Mark IV would probably cut it if your a real tweaker but they are nice
