So how close are the 1959SLP and 1959HW to the real deal?

Oh I have no reason to doubt Dave, I know the stock pile he has been around ;) I dont think I would really mind though since I dont have the time in the seat he does.

Oh! I didn't mean it that way! I just wanted to give credence to his statement, because the difference for me was so dramatic that I would not have believed it had someone told me beforehand.

Gettting the 1959HW sounds like a good idea - The HW's are cool because you can tweak them pretty easily, but you could probably get a slp quite a bit cheaper than the HW. If you're not gonna mess with it, I'd save the $$$$ and get an SLP.

Wow... so a clean '71 is going for $2k these days!? Jeez.. I don't want to bum you out with what I paid for mine... LOL! :D

Anyway... What I remember of ratters 1959HW, it sounded like a period-correct Marshall. Very similar to the tones I get from mine. From what I hear, the 1959SLP (PCB) sounds closer to the '74 and later NMV Marshalls. It's not a bad thing, Dave's 74 is a great-sounding amp, but they do sound different than the earlier ones.

The new ones will get in the ball park. But it isn't gonna be the same.
Plus the HW will never get value wise where not spending an extra 6-700 bucks on the 71 wouldn't have made sense.

It's a matter of how and where...
A friend of mine has been buying 60s and 70s Marshalls lately (actually by now bought like 15 of them). And he bought a 71 Super Lead for 1100 and a 71 Super Trem for 1400.

I am not the biggest brand label flag waver on the board, well other than Hamer :D , but I have to get a Marshall bro! I figure if it is not up to snuf then Ugly Betty will go under the knife

I TOTALLY understand and I'm a huge Marshall fan! But trust me dude, get a Mojave Peacemaker.

I've had Super Lead style amps in the past (1959SLP Reissue, 1987x Reissue, and a 1977 or so SuperBass that Shea has now) and I'm here to tell you that none of them sounded exactly like I expected. I always wanted them to sound just like the legendary recordings you hear with vintage Marshalls and they never did. They were all either too bright, too mushy in the lows, etc...

The Peacemaker sounded exactly like those recordings to me. I'm serious. It's THAT good of an amp.
You know if I had to by a new Marshall style amp it would likly be either a Peacemaker, o better yet Germino's JTM100.

I know that when I took the HOM guys over to Cultreri's place three years ago he did hear it.

Days that have gone to shit I sit back and think about that day still to peace out, thanks again.

Speaking of Cliff if I was looking non Marshall I would check out Ben Fargen's stuff as well.

I can certainly appreciate wanting to have the 'real deal' even if there are arguably better or smarter alternatives. I think everybody who digs the classic tones that we all dig should all own a smelly, ripped, scratched, loud, and ugly pre-74 Marshall at least once in their lives. Even if you do decide to sell it later, just get it out of your system so that you can move on with a clear conscience. :D :D

and this is what I am talking about as well...............it is time to get a fucking Marshall Plexi.

This post got me jonesing for the Marshall hang so I pluged into the late 70s Soldano modded (extra pre-amp tube) 100 watter of Dave Simpson's I have in my office...
Yup, Saturday's gig will be that one. Damn that thing is happening.

If I get another Marshall Plexi, I'm just getting one of the reissues bone stock and I'll use an attenuator, either HW or PCB.

My friend in Nashville has a reissue the he uses a Bad Cat Leash on and its sounds really good. Im like you Id get a reissue in a heatbeat.
