So how close are the 1959SLP and 1959HW to the real deal?

Thanks everyone for all the advice, ebay links, and clips you have all provided. I really mean that, you are the guys that I really trust and cant thank you enough for taking the time to educate me on this stuff. Cool thing is that now I can somewhat fake my way through a conversation in regards to Marshalls other than 800s and JVMs :D

That said I am going to take a stab at the Peacemaker because it fits several of the following......

I dont sell amps any longer so resale is not an important factor
I know that it will be pretty new and not hacked up
I fits the LOUD factor I am looking for
In my price range

I guess the saving and wait begins.

Build...............the reason is time George  I have a pre-amp kit I have looked at half completed for damn near a year. This week I have 3 soccer practices, 2 away games and two home games alone.
Portable solder station!!!! :)

No way, I am one of the guys that runs around with the little ones when they go WAY out of bounds and are still kicking the crap out of the ball

You in tomorrow?? Need to order a pup.
:) Funny!

Yup I'll be in tomorrow.

Scott,
I am NOT trying to talk you out of the Peacemaker because I was talking you into it earlier in this thread. But the reality of the Peacemaker is that probably half the people who get one are disappointed with it. But look how many real plexi's and early Super Leads are modified by now. That's because most of the modded ones owners were disappointed in them for some reason too. You will most likely need a boost for a while with it to get comfortable playing that "naked". Just as you would for an early NMV Marshall.

IMO don't worry if it has Power Dampening or not. I personally do not dig the PD in any amount. Cranked into a THD Hot Plate with the Bass Boost switch on is where it's at for me. The amp will be stupid, stupid, stupid loud even attenuated. -16db will be disappointing a bit. -12db will be much better and by -8db the smile on your face will get huge.

Do you have any lower output pickups like a Duncan '78 or a Duncan Custom/59 hybrid. Even the Custom 5 and Custom Custom sound pretty cool through it.

There is just as much chance you'll like the PM as chance you would like a stock early Marshall. Since you are on the east coast and affiliated with all these gain addicts, I'm gonna post the odds at about 50% that you will like it. 25% chance you will like it on the first day with no tips from Pat, Steve, Mark billybogner, or me.

I think you should do it. If you don't like the PM, you probably really wouldn't have dug a stock old Marshall. By the way, I'm going to be looking for another PM soon. Preferably without power dampening because they are less desireable and cheaper. I saw one go for $1100 without PD.

what's a peacemaker??

:D

TONE, that's what that is....

do it digi!!

you'll be bagging on vai's pedestrian tones lickity split!
(and have more chest hair than you'll know what to do with, rupunzel)

I'll stick with my dissenting opinion. I have no doubt the PM is a great amp. It's basically a modded SL built like a brick shithouse, so how could it not be good?

But it ain't a Marshall. It might be better to some, but it ain't a Marshall. And correct me if I'm wrong, but a lot of the guys who like the PM (Thump, Keith, and Chubtone in this thread alone) already did the old Marshall thing. Or have old Marshalls in addition to the PM. In other words, they already scratched the itch that you are looking to scratch.

So my prediction is that you'll be awed by the PM for what it is, but the itch will still be there.

Oh I know I will dig it, I know this for a fact as I have not been gassing this bad since I played Ralph's MK IV rig many years ago at his place. I will man up and admit that I will be owned by the amp, I just dont have the accurate chops that you guys have but yeah I may have a boost pedal or two lying around......as long as it has that same Marshall roar I will be a happy man.

No low output pups, I have JBs, Customs, Evos, Jazz, 59, and a distortion soon in the So-Cal. I dont have the money for those fancy EVHs you guys have :D

I will have a hotplate soon, from past reading I take it the power damping was never really all of that.

You are right, I still will have that itch and yeah I predict that at some point I will add an old Marshall at some point. I just dont want to go through the hunt, find something and then get something that was hacked badly or in serious need of attention.

I still have the JVM shell though :D

Scott IMO you should just get a Cameron Jose modded Marshall and be done with it. I went through this whole thing with vintage Marshalls, different boosts and Hotplates, and in the end could never get them to sound as good as Marks mods. Plus with the Camerons I could get that tone at any volume. They are the ultimate Marshall IMO.

I used to have a pile of old Marshalls back in the 80's to early 90's. Unfortunately, I got stupid and caught up in a rack phase in the 90's and sold them all off (well, my ears had taken a beating too). Back then nobody wanted them and I think the most I ever got for one was $850 for the '67 which was in fantastic shape. I was only getting like $500 for early 70's heads. I bet most of these ended up drilled for mods, effect loops, etc. It was the craze.

Anyways, if you ever have a chance to find one, I really leaned towards the 1972 heads. I'm not sure what it was, but they tended to be a little more high gain than previous years. I think that was the last of the PTP years too. I had two 1972 100 watters and a great 50 watter that you could crank without doing too much damage. I did like the '67' too. I had a lot of bad ones though, they can be vastly different even when they seem to be perfectly healthy and in good working order. Oh, and get a cab (or two for 100 watts!) with some greenbacks too. Big part of the sound!

Exact opposite here, but that's OK, we're all strong, long legged men with different opinions.

There is no doubt that I would love a Cameron amp, Danhop's Ocean mod is one of the best high gain amps I have ever heard. Everything I want in an amp was there.

That said I have to own a plexi type amp, the JVM does not give me that WHAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in your face at higher volumes that I am looking for and well it is just time to learn to play a plexi

That's why I finally went Peacemaker. I'll tell the story again for Scott's benefit. I bought a '70 Super Tremelo for a pretty good price. It was not hacked for any holes and the circuit was not messed with, just stock. However, it needed a new power transformer. I don't remember why but think the one it had was only for Europe and was 220v. My memory may be wrong on this though. Anyways, I took it out to Plexi Palace to have the guy considered the GURU of old Marshalls in Southern California take a look at it. They ended up putting a MM power transformer in it and called me to tell me to come out and pick it up and bring my favorite guitar with me to check it out.

So I get there with my guitar and Vic and Craig were telling me what was wrong with my amp but how the circuit was still all original and Vic was saying this is a really, really good Marshall. He set me up in the loud room next door and I played my Marshall for 15 or 20 minutes cranked but into the Hot Plate. I couldn't believe it. This was finally the best Marshall I had ever played. I started packing my stuff up and Vic came in and said, "I was hoping you would have time to play the Peacemaker and tell me what you think after playing your Marshall for so long". So he set up the Peacemaker. He had it Hot Plated and line out into a TC Chorus and Hughes and Kettner Replex into a tube power amp. So he had it wet-dry with just a dry PM and a 4x12 on one side and the other side wet. He turned it on and walked out and closed the door. He didn't play a note.

Well, I KNOW that "trick". I didn't play a note yet either. I walked over to the rig and hit Standby on the power amp. No wet-dry, home field advantage was going to be given to the Peacemaker by me. Within 2 minutes of turning on the dry Peacemaker into exactly what I had been playing my Marshall into had I decided that I HAD to have one of them. THIS was THE Marshall I had been looking for since 1982. At the time I had 4 old Marshall heads so I sold my 3rd and 4th favorite ones and bought a Peacemaker. I haven't missed those Marshalls for one second. And the Super Tremelo that Vic fixed for me 5 years ago? It's still the best actual MARSHALL I have ever owned. It still has those same tubes Vic put in it for me 5 years ago. They have about 5 hours on them.

Didn't you already do the Peacemaker thing?

No, I never tried one. In fact I'd probably have to mod it with a PPIV MV of some kind, or else get a UA (or both). I need kid friendly volume levels which has always kept me away from the PM.
