I had a lot of bad ones though, they can be vastly different even when they seem to be perfectly healthy and in good working order.
That's why I finally went Peacemaker. I'll tell the story again for Scott's benefit. I bought a '70 Super Tremelo for a pretty good price. It was not hacked for any holes and the circuit was not messed with, just stock. However, it needed a new power transformer. I don't remember why but think the one it had was only for Europe and was 220v. My memory may be wrong on this though. Anyways, I took it out to Plexi Palace to have the guy considered the GURU of old Marshalls in Southern California take a look at it. They ended up putting a MM power transformer in it and called me to tell me to come out and pick it up and bring my favorite guitar with me to check it out.
So I get there with my guitar and Vic and Craig were telling me what was wrong with my amp but how the circuit was still all original and Vic was saying this is a really, really good Marshall. He set me up in the loud room next door and I played my Marshall for 15 or 20 minutes cranked but into the Hot Plate. I couldn't believe it. This was finally the best Marshall I had ever played. I started packing my stuff up and Vic came in and said, "I was hoping you would have time to play the Peacemaker and tell me what you think after playing your Marshall for so long". So he set up the Peacemaker. He had it Hot Plated and line out into a TC Chorus and Hughes and Kettner Replex into a tube power amp. So he had it wet-dry with just a dry PM and a 4x12 on one side and the other side wet. He turned it on and walked out and closed the door. He didn't play a note.
Well, I KNOW that "trick". I didn't play a note yet either. I walked over to the rig and hit Standby on the power amp. No wet-dry, home field advantage was going to be given to the Peacemaker by me. Within 2 minutes of turning on the dry Peacemaker into exactly what I had been playing my Marshall into had I decided that I HAD to have one of them. THIS was THE Marshall I had been looking for since 1982. At the time I had 4 old Marshall heads so I sold my 3rd and 4th favorite ones and bought a Peacemaker. I haven't missed those Marshalls for one second. And the Super Tremelo that Vic fixed for me 5 years ago? It's still the best actual MARSHALL I have ever owned. It still has those same tubes Vic put in it for me 5 years ago. They have about 5 hours on them.
