So, I bought a Strat today.....My first Strat...

Call me crazy, I liked putting a hot rails in the bridge so I could play metallica, megadeth, old VH covers and not only get a decent tone but not have 90db of annoying hum and buzz. :)

Now, crazy would be having someone take a woodworking tool to the bridge pickup cavity!

You're crazy too! :D[/quote]

Yep! I do love my EJ strat though, it's the best sounding strat I've owned. Those guitars are great value for the money, especially used.

putting hot humbuckers on a strat like that is positively sinful IMO...but to each is own, what ever floats your boat.!

I've been drooling over them since they first came out. Especially like JB's black one here....

Have you played one?

Sounded nice, but the neck shape and frets???
I don't mind necks with some substance but does Eric Johnson have huge palms or what?

It almost goes against everything I like in an easy playing neck.

I think that strat looks great

I also think you're crazy to route that for a full size HB, but its your guitar to do what you want with it so go for it I guess

I have small hands, no issues playing an EJ neck. I'm actually liking bigger necks now... I think it makes the guitar sound better too. Thin necks sound like crap imho.

EJ has some great tone, I'm not doubting his build requirements.
But that neck could never feel like 'home' for me...and I actually have very big hands.

I love the neck. It's what sold me on the guitar. Soft V into a C shape around the 12th fret.

That's what matters...I just feel like stating my opinion for some reason, when really who cares because it's your guitar. ;)

I had two of them, I couldn't jive with the neck shape or the dinky frets.
I'm backing down...don't get me started again!
Some people dig it.

Please don't route out that guitar

I agree with the others if you want a humbucker in the bridge get a small single coil sized one. I started on a strat and am a strat guy by nature. I have one with a JB in the bridge, I recently coil split it and that is working well, I am going to get rid of the push pull and put in a switch. (Push-pull pots just feel real cheap to me).

I have another with a hot rails (my first guitar). I am probably going to try coil spliting this one as well with a push pull and see how I like it. I haven't heard of anyone doing this, but I will see how it sounds.

I recently picked up a SSS strat and I have been playing that alot lately. I really like the 3 single coils. Its not as versatile as my other strats, but I am enjoying those SC tones in the bridge and the position 4 that I was missing....

ROUT THAT FUCKER. Every strat I own has been routed  Single coils are for country music...

Great country music coming out of Blackmore, E.J., Yngwie, Uli Roth, Hendrix, Beck...let me guess, you are a metal head!
   just kidding..

Couldn't resist. Got an Eric Johnson Strat locally (used). Really liking it as far as playability, but man, I'm definately not a single coil guy. So, I was thinking before I even bought it (tell me if I'm crazy here), that I'm going to have a local, very well respected luthier route it out for a humbucker in the bridge. Some might think I'm crazy doing this to such a nice guitar, but I figure it will really kick some arse when I get it some beef.

So, I'm I crazy?
those pickup on that axe are gonna sound bright unless u do what he does which is roll off on the tone knob towards the bridge pickup, which darkens the tone however decreases the output.
I just tryed rolling back the tone pot on the bridge and WOW!! What a difference! These tone pots are very different from what I'm used (never using them   ). I turned it down about 3/4 of the way and it sounds great now! Very cool, thanks for mentioning it!

Serious like a fucking heart attack. That is why I wont buy an EJ or YJM strat, because 10 minutes after I got it home the router would be pulled out.
Animal!

 Congrats! EJ Strats kick ass. I'm NOT a conventional strat type person, as I don't like single coils, but I really like the EJ Strat. When I got mine I thought about routing it for a humbucker, and I thought about trying out some single coil sized humbuckers in it (I even bought an HS-3 to try in it, and stuck it in a MIJ strat but prefer how the stock EJ bridge single coil sounds!) but I've gotten used to it (With the bridge tone rolled down) and I'm pretty damn happy with it.

I haven't played one yet. I do like the small EB necks. But I don't mind the big ones either. I'm sure it's smaller than the neck on my R7 was. That thing was B I G. But when you can't play fast, it doesn't really matter much!

What I'm sure I wouldn't like about it is the finish on the neck. A lacquered maple fretboard drives me nuts. But the rosewood EJ's are coming out at NAMM. Hopefully it won't be a bound neck like the prototype. I think a bound fretboard on a strat looks totally retarded.

I like how Dave thinks...the LP fans better hope I do not win powerball cause a real 59 is going to GMW for a floyd.

But to be serious you better bound with that guitar first cause if you route it your resale is going to suck. IMO you bought the wrong strat if you are going to mod it. For me the back of the neck would meet mr steel wool cause I find that neck sticky as hell.

I met Eric Johnson and shook his hand, his hands are very large. There's a chord on his first instructional video that's impossible to fret.

I prefer singles myself but if you want a humbucker rout it. It's not like its a one off special custom or vintage, there are plenty of them around and they are still being made. Probably only hurt the resale value 100-200. If its done properly there will probably be barely any negative impact on tone.
